There are 2 reasons it still goes on: 1) There is still a vibrant market, mostly in Europe, for these pelts, and; 2) The government of Canada would rather fishermen club seals, skin them alive and look like complete assholes, rather than have these men collect welfare when they're not fishing. What is being done to these baby seals is inhumane. The videos are disgusting,and I have seen seals skinned alive. So if you don't think this is inhumane then you are as bad as the sealers that do it.
Yeah, it's funny these people will protest a sustainable animal hunt but neglect endangered species such as cod. Why aren't they doing something more constructive? I've seen baby seals before and I've still got no trouble eating their meat. The seal population is huge. I know parts of Newfoundland where seals actually wash up in droves and die, leaving the stench of seal oil for weeks and months. This happens because their numbers are too high. Sure tastes good though. :P
The seal hunt is sustainable. The whale species most often hunted by the Japanese fleet are Minke whales and if you simpletons would check wikipedia you would see it is not a species threatened with extinction.
