Very nice video, Hickok. Maybe after I've collected the modern firearms I want I'll look into old west guns...There is something very cool about them...
Excellent as always. Djquack12, when loading your 3030. There is a bullet catch just past the loading gate. If you bullet is is being pushed back behind the gate, the catch is broken or you not pushing it far enough past the loading gate.
When loading my Winchester 30-30. I have to leave the end of the cartridge sticking out, because the spring pushes it back over the loading gate. So the magazine has to be empty before loading.
I believe Hickok teaches elementary or junior high school students. If I am not mistaken he focuses mostly on history. Fortunately, I believe he has some freedom in his lesson plans since he teaches at a private or parochial school.
Hickok do you have an guns that shoot cowboy loads? We got some iver and johnsons in .32 and .38 and im a little reclucant to buy ammo and fire them.. Any experience?
@ hickok45 In regards to loading a lever gun you were kinda wondering why some people load the rounds through the loading gate by pushing them halfway in at a time. I just wanted to sorta help "shed some light on the subject"; i know with my model 94 winchester i load them that way. I don't do it necessarily for safety, but because if i don't load it in that fashion i can't get all the rounds in the gun. The other bullets get in the way when the loading gate shuts, preventing further loading. :)
i had some pretty awesome teachers in my day but Hickok45, you would have topped them all! if any of my teachers showed me a youtube video of them shooting references a novel or movie we studied, i would have lost it! NOT TO MENTION A SHOOTING VIDEO! thanks so much for the videos, keep them coming! btw i just watched the mini 14 video for the first time! Its my next gun for sure, forget the AR! I love it!
my grandfather have a winchester 1873 model,it was made around the mid 80 he said to me...but still i hope i'll get it one day it's so beautiful, one of my favourites
I´m not so crazy about the wild west theme, in popular culture, apart from Sergio Leone´s films and the video game Red Dead Redemption, which I absolutly love. But I´m really in to history generally, so these old guns fascinates me. Also I´m very much in to Steampunk, the type of fiction set on either early industrial era world with all those neat old pieces of technology, or a fictional world inspired by that.
So this video was so cool because it allowed me to share my enthusiasm to both....
Whatever happened to lever guns? You only saw them in the Wild West. The mechanism seems much more practical than a bolt action, yet you only see bolt action rifles in all the armies in the world wars and so on. What made the lever gun less popular at the turn of the century?
@robbanzana, With a bolt gun you can fire a very hot pointed bullet (no danger of magazine detonation with bullets end to end), and the lever itself creates some problems with shooting prone.
@robbanzana As hickok said: "no danger of magazine detonation with bullets end to end". Since The Hague Convention of 1899 (if I remember correctly) only FMJ bullets are allowed in warfare. Usually those are "pointy" and you don't want those to be pressed to the next cartridge's primer by a spring.
And one more thing: bolt actions can be reloaded faster with a stripper clip.
@robbanzana A few reasons, A bolt action is extremely sturdy and can handle powerful ammunition with ease. Bolt actions are simpler in construction, Which makes them not only more reliable but also cheaper to make. And as Hickok45 mentioned, the magazine, since there is alot more space for a magazine Bolt actions tend to use internal box magazines so the bullet can be very sharply pointed without the danger of a chain detonation in your magazine.
@robbanzana Firing from prone is one reason as hickok45 says, also most armed forces require semi or fully automatic weapons with a high rate of fire. As a personal firearm they're great and very popular especially here in the UK where we're not permitted to own semi-automatics more powerful than .22LR.
the 1886 inspired hira maxim to create the machein gun he found that if u dont hold on to the handle as hard and u let it fly back all u had to do was twist ur rist to reload it to me that just sounds like a bad idea
The reason for the "half-way" loading with the gate is some rifles or even some production runs make the gate not wanna budge with a round in front of it. so its easier to leave the back of the case in the gate so you don't have to fight it.
This was an excellent video and very educational. Modern firearms are great of course but there's something to be said for a good ol' fashioned single action. I'd like to see more like this in the future, thanks for putting this together!
John Wayne might have carried his 1892 in a scene set previously. Well the reason to that is, he can travel time. That's how cool he is. Can you travel time Hickok? Your pretty cool
hey hickok i have been watching all of your western style videos latley and have noticed that you do not have a review of the winchester 1897 and was wondering if you could get your hands on one and possibly show it in one of your upcoming videos? thanks again

@WildGaston , No, it just says, "the gun was a single-action Colt, the same model as the Regular Army issue that was the favorite of all men in those days and that old-timers used to say was the finest pistol ever made." My favorite line, though, is "The smooth invitation of it tempted your grasp." Ain't THAT the truth! :-)

The wild west was about making a new life for yourself and family on your own, not everyone sharing everything in some grand utopia, which is what communism is. @EFG44 Ya the government took land and pushed out the Indians and what not but its the same thing today. without pushing out the Indians... fur trade, railroad, mining, hunting... huge business lots of people made a living off it. Doesn't seem much different except you gotta man up and get dirty that's for sure. And the law saying you didn't have to flee from a fight. just whip your gun out. Id like to do that to the person that stole $1000 from my family. There just evil.
I have an idea. Not too useful but might be interesting to set up another camera parallel to the gong. Zoom it in and on high speed to try and record impact of a shotgun slug or some large caliber. You could make sure that the camera is protected by sitting it behind a tree. Then show it in both normal and slow-mo. What do ya think?
hey hickok i have a ? do u know if the Pietta Model 1851 Confederate Navy .44 Caliber Revolver has a rear sight cause i found one on cabelas for 139.99 and might get it for xmass
Arg! Wild West wasn't that wild. In fact per ca-pita, crime was about 1 - 2% of what it is today. In one of the biggest toughest gold mining boom towns of the time, Bodi, CA, the rape rate was 0%. Rape never happened. In fact, one fellow did 30 days for swearing in front of a woman. Yes, I do wish we could go back to some of those ways. Oh sorry, howdy H45! Great video, again!
@AirstripBum The official record says that, and there probably is an element of truth in it. However, many crimes back in the west went unreported. You also got to remember that casualties from the Indian Wars added up. By the time the Indian wars were done, there was almost no family on the frontier that had not lost at least one family member from Native raids. Don't even get me started on how bad Native casualties were due to disease and army attacks.
@OldManRiver54 Howdy! I wasn't counting indian attacks or wars. I was only counting robbery, burglary, rape, etc. "I think" that it was because more people were Christians back then and because just about everyone kept and bared guns. There were killings though but the citizens didn't much worry about them because for the most part, they were thug on thug and between consenting adults. However, premeditated murder of a law abiding citizen was taken seriously.
@AirstripBum Howdy to you too! I know what you're saying, but still, the desert is a big and unforgiving place. You must be careful anytime you go out there, cause if anything was to happen, nobody would know what happened to you. This was especially true back in the day even more than now, as finding lost people was harder back then. It always just makes me wonder how many people were, ahem, "lost" out there and nobody knew what happened...
Gives me the heebee-jeebees just thinking about it...
@imaman1222 yes you can shoot black powder through a ruger. Modern guns can shoot black powder. However the opposite is not true. Black powder guns can't shoot modern powder.
Why couldn't I have ever had a teacher this cool?

the reason people push the cartridge half way in is to keep the loading gate open and on some guns the gate gets jammed shut if you don't.

@OldManRiver54 You're right about that. That is a heebee-jeebee generating thought. Stay armed brother!

What novel are you talking about?
coltar1234 5 months ago
@imaman1222 yes you can shoot black powder through a ruger. Modern guns can shoot black powder. However the opposite is not true. Black powder guns can't shoot modern powder.
