  • @Sebastijanovski Yeah we know that but for pushrod engines (single cam in block) this is the greatest camshaft breakthrough ever. We can now enjoy the benefits of DOHC tractability without needing them and enjoy lower inertia too.

  • Check out Ford's new system on its Coyote and EcoBoost engines- variable for timing, duration and lift- allowing the same engine to be tuned for max emission, max torque, or max hp at ANY given RPM. The direct injection 3.5 V6 makes 430ft/lb torque in the trucks @ a mildly tuned 365 hp. Check it out!

  • The Mahle CamInCam system does not vary the valve opening duration. This means that it has a very limited effect on the engine's performance. Basically it is only used in the Viper to help the engine pass emmission standards. The helical camshaft appears to be the only existing mechanical continuously variable duration system.

  • @MrEricJameson It seems to have a constantly variable degree of valve overlap. Looks like they're trying to improve volumetric efficiency throughout the operating rev range of the engine. It'd be good for both performance and emissions.

    i think your design can also be employ on a DOHC engine, no only to change the timing, but also the DURATION, CONTINUOUSLY.

    each valve/rocker arm to be service by 2 "half cam lobe"

    eg, on the intake, fix the "half cam" for the valve closing, while the "half cam lobe" for the valve opening be attach to the inner shaft and adjusted accordingly (advance) to RPM. do the opposite on the exhaust cam.

    it will be better than VTEC (non continuous) but less complicated than HELICAL SHAFT.

  • ... the HELICAL camshaft is the only design that can varies the DURATION, continuously. (search wikipedia, "Helical camshaft")

    your design have the potential to do the same, but less complicated and easier to manufactured.

  • @ariffkm: This is a camshaft for a pushrod engine. not SOHC, but basically does the same thing as a DOHC

    @yan: the video shows the camshaft that went into the SRT-10 Viper, but I think Chrysler also uses it in their new Hemi 5.7 V8.

    and @ the rest of the world: anyone know the answer to jfv's question? I'm also curious what mechanism controls the phase offset for the inner shaft.

    My best guess on the mechanism would be between cam chain tensioners along with some centrifugal gismos, or, a cam chain tensioner on one part, and oil pressure to the other. Those are more able to rev high at least.

    Question remains: how is the valvetiming managed/actuated/changed? Oilpressure? Electric motor? Vacuum?

  • some use oil pressure (hydraulic controlled).

    Some use a 'stepper' motor to change the position.

  • I guess its actuated the same way as the eccentric weights on a Wacker vibratory plate compactor: You can let it "jump" forward or reverse by rotating the eccenter weights on the shaft by means of hydraulic pressure, fed through the shaft center. Lobes are more or less comparable to the eccenterweights of the vibratory compactor. I once had one stuck a couple of days after a repair, because i used too much instant gasket when reassembling after repair !

    i mean they have some sort of thing that bolts to the end of the cam on the opposite side of the cam gears but hoe does it change it and when do they usually kick in ?
