It's sad we have came to an era were vampires or even now zombies (As I heard is happening with upcoming, "Warm Bodies") are looked at non vicious now. The Lost Boys exploited the "vampire effect" so you can pop yourself down in a movie seat or at your home and be actually scared or thrilled. The Twilight series has a different take - which in the end is always refreshing but only if it is done well.
i'm not sure how they wanted the movie to end... the only other ending i can think of is the family becoming vampires and the toad bros being killed. i think that would have been too dark for the type of movie the lost boys was. i personally enjoyed the action scene in the house. i thought it was fitting. and realistically, the movie wasn't gory.
whats cool about movies like this is that yes, they're basically without substance, but they make you feel cool enough to reflect on the substance in your own life.
How can Roger Ebert give this movie a thumb down when he actually gave a major shitbomb of a movie like Curly Sue a thumb up? He specifically said that this movie had lots of great qualities but then he gives it a thumbs down just because he expected something better in the end? Curly Sue was a stupid movie with lots of immature juvenile humour and he gave that a thumb up. Can you believe that? The Lost Boys deserved way better reviews than this.
I agree with S&E. This was a "cool" movie...especially if you saw it at age 13 back in 87 as I did. But it doesn't hold up. A lot of promise though. Ah well.
When one goes back and looks at a lot their "reviews" it becomes clear that Ebert rarely knew what was really going on with most of the films he reviewed. Siskel a little bit better critic, but both were wildly off the mark here. This was never a great film, but it was a good one, rather funny and a decent benchmark for its era.
This film has earned its place in cinema history as a hallmark of that decade. The performances were quality w/each character personality-specific & memorable except for Jamie Gs, whose was a bit flat. In any event, these critics sound like old geezers. How can they NOT appreciate this movie for exactly what it is-A VAMPIRE MOVIE of that time & they are more concerned w/the personal relationships?? This film has held up better over time than their 'reviews' of it.
haim and felmen squared off for the the love of jamie getz... she liked sutherland... sutherland and patrick were battling over julia roberts at that time... that tension made this film thrilling
Yesterday, I saw this movie for the first time and I loved it. It was so much fun. I'd recommend watching this alongside The Goonies. They sure knew how to make a good teen movie back in the 1980s.
There are definitely parts of the film that are dated, but I have to say that Jason Patric's performance is fantastic. He's natural in his delivery which makes his performance timeless. His work here can stand up to any work that's presented currently. JP has always reminded me of Brando at his best in "Streetcar..."
not sure i agree with the Brando comparison but i agree that J.Patric was great in Lost Boys and i'm surprised his career didn't take off on the back of that.
he didn't really play the game though. 'Rush' was hardly the most obvious choice for him at the time.
@lamentate07 - I think that he had to step back and let the teen-heartrob image die down. After The Lost Boys, he played characters that seemed much older than he is and are inherently 'damaged' in some fashion, which helped break that pin-up-boy facade. (DiCaprio went through the same trial after Titanic)
.
I think that his career choices have been great. Look at Daniel Day Lewis; he's had a career that has had major gaps in between projects, and he's very selective with his roles.
@lamentate07 -Dicaprio has made interesting choices. I would hardly call The Departed, Blood Diamond, GoNY, Revolutionary Road, etc. pin-up-boy fare -these are grittier roles requiring an a astute actor to breath life into them. Just because he's good-looking doesn't mean he can't deliver a fantastic performance or deserve accolades for his work. He's proved his chops years ago
One of his best performances was in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and that came out at the beginning of his career.

Oh My God,...Roger Ebert is a REPTILIAN, disguised as a human movie critic!!!!! No wonder his writing skills are beyond most normal human beings. This is proof! Reptoids do exist!
I never understood why Siskel and Ebert gave The Lost Boys two thumbs down. They both said in this review that the movie had great performances but then they disagree that it's a worthwhile film? That doesn't make sense. It's almost as if what they are saying is that it was so spectacular, that it was not worth seeing. It doesn't make any sense. As far as I'm concerned Siskel and Ebert are both snobs. They don't like anything.
I Hate Siskel and Ebert..(Yes I know one of them died)..but I allways hated theses guys they don't know a good picture at all...they all ways pick boring movies and Rated them so high on their list...I never listened to them at All if I saw a movie I liked I watched. it. I never saw a movie because of their word it was good... they just sucked at reviewing movies.
I disagree with Siskel and Ebert on a lot of films but that doesn't mean their dumb and I'm smarter. Just a matter of opinion. A much better vampire film came out the same year "Near Dark" which got overlooked in the shuffle and I urge you to see that and compare. I'm no fan of Schumacher but I think his best film to date that I've seen was "Tigerland", which also was not well distributed.
I agree Siskel and Ebert never knew a good movie when it came out they allways trashed movies Like the Lost boys or other good horror movies and picked boring movies they liked.
What's "good" and "bad" is a relative term, what you like another person may not, its all a matter of opinion. I don't expect everyone to like the films I do, you shouldn't either. For the record Ebert liked "Re-Animator", "Evil Dead 2", the "Cat People" remake, they both liked "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" and "Scream 2", so while they weren't horror fans perhaps but didn't dislike the entire genre. "Near Dark" which also came out in '87 is way better than "Lost Boys" I think.
I can't believe Joel "Bat Nipples" Schumacher made this. And I can't believe Siskel and Ebert gave it a thumbs down. I thought Ebert was going to like it right at the beginning.
You meant to say "Yeah, actually he said "My own brother a goddamn shit sucking vampire! You wait til' Mom finds out buddy!"
