So many people thought it was neat when the water receded, they ran out to grab fish even, completely unaware of the wall of death approaching. Ill never forget that tiny silhouette of a person just standing there frozen as it approached, he never even tried to run
@jdollinter Have a look at the documentary 'Tsunami caught on camera',( you'll find it on Youtube) to see exactly what that blonde guy did for the elderly couple. In the end he helped save the life of the old man, unfortunately the old lady died. In that situation what would you have done ?? probably nothing !
@jdollinter Are you kidding me. Those people were a lost cause, did you see how powerful those waves were? If you try to rescue them then you might get killed along with them.
The hell, man... I can't believe I just watched kids die. And no wonder so many people died, it's like they had no Tsunami awareness at all. They're just standing at ground level and watching. They didn't stand a chance. But seriously...if you're the first cameraman, and you'd rather record children being swept away than to try to save them from being swept away, you're probably better off being at ground level during a 40 foot high Tsunami.
Dude from 1st clip films as couple of kids gets sweep by waves but keep rolling. What an a-hole. About two eldery getting swept from restaurant video, man lived but woman unfortunatelly not. They were Sweds. There was an interview with him and man who rescued him on TV. OMG @ 2.04 wave height. At first I thought it's ilussion coming from cam angle, but than watch carefully as cam shows same wave again.
@feelingsupersonic19 I agree with you.I know its awful for all involved but when you see that couple and they get swept away its terrible. You actually see the man climbing up rails but not with his wife in another clip. So sad.
This is what I will never understand. EVERY one of those people were aware that a Tsunami was coming. They can take hours to reach shore. And yet they still chose to go down to the beach to watch. I dig being curious. I'd like to see a Tsunami too. But I'd rather see the next day.
@teejate Not everyone was informed about it. Especially the shores closest to the epicenter are hit sooner than we expect. Keeping in mind its 2004 and we didn't have facebook and twitter those days to alert people. It is tragic and many people have actually died in the very footage shown above..
@MistyOjaiGirl I have a feeling that man is from Australia and I recall him tearfully retelling how he could not hold onto her any longer, truly very sad. All of this very very sad. My thoughts go to everyone who experienced this dreadful disaster.
My guess is that they didn't realize it was quite as huge and devastating as it was until it was too late. I mean maybe I'm wrong- I know things look different on camera- but those waves don't look THAT huge to me until they are crashing into the sea. At least judging by this video I don't know if I'd have run, I'd have thought I was far enough back at the point where these people are. Once it hit, though, I wouldn't have stood there filming. :)
i guess 'fight or flight' just never kicks in for some people, didnt seem like people really started to panic till walls were coming down and cars were gettin pushed
It's obvious that by looking at the sheer force of the raging water, it would have been nearly impossible to do anything but watch helplessly.
Maybe he thought that the best help he could give was simply to record exactly what the power of water CAN do, so that others can see the devastating effect nature can have, and in doing so, warn others.
Maybe more lives will be saved from watching this video than could have been saved by risking the cameramans' life to help those in the video.
Indeed. If only those nations had a developed system such as the US & Japan to warn of an approaching tsunami. Certainly, lives would have been lost, but perhaps not nearly as many as there were.
its not like it was a tornado cuz that would've been deadly

Guess I was wrong about the blonde guy, I do see him now trying to reach a hand out to them early before more water rushes in. Sorry about that.

How high was the wave when it hit the shore?

Notice how the blonde guy in swimming trunks did nothing to help save the eldery
couple struggling against the water. Guess he's a product of these times.
