  • Oh yes, I love Albert the Albatross. I'd love to hear Sally the Seal too, one I used to sing to my daughter when she was little.

Another song I think you would do real justice to is 'The Setting' . I'd love to hear you sing that too!

  • yes i have sang 'the setting' many times.. that could just be my next one.. sally the seal can also go on the list..

  • Being a massive Ralph fan and a bit of a purist I don't tend to enjoy many covers, but I've seen a few of yours now and I'm very impressed. This is one of those I feel you do real justice to, so many thanks!

ps..I'd love to hear more Alphabet zoo!

  • hi Elkie540 he was my hero years ago.. I owe a lot to his life and times especially in my guitaring formative years.. he always seem to write the songs I wished I had.. if you know what i mean.. Alphabet zoo is fantastic.. I'll dig out a few more. albert the albatross??

  • happy new year mike (yes i know its a bit late !! )

  • could see it as the first for next year lol HNY hope its a great one..

  • any chance of some more ralph from you?

  • i was thinking of doing Zig Zag Line today....

  • This song is the kind of song my heart's been hungry for of late...it is entirely new to me, but it feels like and old friend - the kind who knows and understands everything.

I have to say your music reminds me of these lines from a Harry Chapin song:

    "Remember when the music

Brought the night across the valley as the day went down

And as we'd hum the melody, we'd be safe inside the sound,

And so we'd sleep, we had dreams to keep...."

  • very few people find this song.. i use to sing it a lot and now i feel i don't have to.. i might try it out this evening.. i still know all the words..

  • Ralph's version is such a hard act to follow, but this really catches the mood of the song. Used to play the album to death circa 1981, and love your take on a terrific song.

  • totally.. he is a great song writer.. i have always loved playing this song.. cheers M:)

  • beautifully done, thanks mike..............i first heard this over 30 years ago........where does the time go ?

  • who know's where the time goes..? . umm that reminds me of a song.. :)

  • SO very good to hear this again. It makes me sad, but in a good sort of way, maybe because I know I'm not the only person to feel this way when I listen. You do a great job-very envious of your talented playing and singing, but great to be able to share it with you.

  • thank you sb.. I think there are few that would not relate to this song in one way or another.. thanks for dropping me a note.. h xmas.. M:)

  • What a moving rendition of this beautiful McTell song. Well done mate.

  • many thanks for listening.. M

  • Yes McTell has written some really lovely songs thanks for reminding me

    Nice post

  • this is one of his saddest.. M

  • I have always told you that you should record your songs darling, I would love this on my ipod! xx

  • maybe I should get around to making an album.. ummm..? M

  • Very nice,+++++ so touching.

  • I like to think all these stars go up to the night sky and help light the way..

  • Wow Mike- I didn't know this song, but I hope you don't mind that it's now one of my favorites. You do such an excellent job, and I love your finger work....I play guitar just badly enough to know how difficult it is, to do it so well! LOL I'm a bit of a "soft touch" (ok, here comes ridicule, no doubt!) and this song had me a bit teary. Thanks...I love a good "cry out", I believe you would say...;-)

  • hi eurobiker.. I'm with you all the way.. there are times I have played this song especially years ago and had to work hard to hold it together.. would I say 'cry out' ? absolutely.. to feel emotion is to be alive.. .. for some reason your comments didn't get picked up on my e mail account but are too good to pass by.. thanks for taking the time in writing kind and sensitive lines

  • Mike this is such a difficult song to play and sing, both of which you do so well. I also agree that it is probably one of my most FAVOURITE songs that one very rarely hears today. I hope Ralph plays it in his tour of Derby in Nov 2008.

Again great picking and chord formations.

    Take care

    David

  • Hi david.. thanks again for your kind comment.. are you seeing him this november.. I'm away.. you can often get to ask him to sing particular songs.. you could ask for this one!! cheers Mike

  • I love this Mike. L xx

  • its a beautiful (and v sad) song..

  • I love this song. Cant find a vid of McTell doing this anywhere, but now Ive heard this, I dont need it! Im trying to learn it, this will help a lot, although you add your own touches which make it so special. Nice job xx

  • Hi Zeldagoblin.. sorry for the late reply.. have you got it yet.. Its a really great song.. close to home..

  • i love this song, but every time i try to sing along to the chorus, i start crying so i can't sing! geez mike, do you have to be so good at this?

  • its a great song sher .. one of my all time favs.. maybe you should stop chopping onions while you..

  • Brilliant! This is a lost gem of a song (I've still got the LP!).

I used to think that Dolly Parton would have had a smash hit with it, because the chorus always brings a lump to the throat!

Anyway, you've done a GREAT job.

  • Thanks VB. I think I wrote earlier that is is one of my all time favs.. I didn't know DP recorded a version. girl got taste.. cheers M

  • Aaah....No, she hasn't done a cover. She, like the rest of the world, probably doesn'r know the song! But I always thought it would suit her perfectly...with the ralantando into the chorus, and the emotion that can be packed into it.

  • wow. wow. wow. you probably get tired of people saying wow about your singing and your

gift. I couldn't wait to get home from work and listen to you sing songs i've never heard before. I knew I would love them since so far, I have listened to you play my favorite songs. I am tucking this one into my heart as a new favorite. You have to do that you know when a song chooses to be there.

  • Hi Sher.. this is one of my all time favourite RMcT songs. He has written many good songs that I would have wanted to .. but it's always been a joy to play them. I'd love to record this again.

  • Heard Ralph Mctell sing this live years ago and it became my favourite song of his...lovely cover version.

Are you on Myspace at all?

  • Hi Mo, Yes I've heard him sing this many times. Thanks for your note. Not on Myspace.. ?? is it good?

  • A wonderful song and a groovy singing. So true...5*

    Warm hugs to you

  • This is one of my all time fav songs. M:)

  • I've lost my original McTell album that contained this song and have not heard it for many years. This is one of the most beautiful songs, music and lyrics that I've ever heard. thnks

  • I think its from 'not till tomorrow'' a very beautiful album..

  • One of my favourite McTell tunes. Great cover. I'll dig out the tab and learn this now :)

  • It's a very sweet song. Hope you have fun learning it Calum.

  • Mine as well - but then there are so many of them, Calum ;-) - do remember to check out

    LeonMitch's versions as well.

    Lovely version , Mike -

    mange tak ;-) ( many thanks )

  • Very true. McTell is one of, if not, my all-time favourite. So many great songs came out of that man :)

  • And they are still coming ;-)

Have you been keeping up to date ?

  • Many thanks eddie

  • Nice! Very nice!

  • many thanks

  • Really great
