I totally agree with Neil's take on the arrangement. When the choir kicked in at the end, I was thinking "for the love of God, why?!" It's like the person that wrote the arrangement had never actually listened to the song.
This is the best split enz song cause it's got meaning. I love some if their other stuff, like 6 months in a leaky boat, but it's all just fun. Which is good, but this song has good lyrics and meaning :) and it's beautiful xx
Tim's voice is not nearly as strong as it once was, and as of the recording of this song, I'm sure he would not have been able to pull this song off. But when he was in his heyday, I always preferred his vocal style. He is much more intense, which may translate as overemoting to some, but I still love to hear him on the earlier albums.
@runninglikewind I saw Tim perform in ALT, and he was brilliant. He has much more angst than Neil. I liken Tim to John Lennon, Neil more of a Paul. And don't forget about Judd, the two of them neurotically feeding off each other's energy!
@ahisandwich don't completely agree on the john lennon thing. I think if anyone was Lennon in Split Enz it must have been Judd, but not Tim. Tim is a crooner, a brilliant melodist(like Mccartney, not Lennon).
Too right, Neil: there is an underlying humour about it. I know I had a chuckle. Beautiful stuff, but way overblown. 'Never-again-zo' indeed! For a more intimate version, see Missy Higgins' take on it from the She Will Have Her Way compilation.
I love Missy but I thought that and the Renee Geyer track (my favourite Enz and Crowded House songs) completely missed the boat!! And I also think Neil sings it better than Tim - Tim over emotes Neil finds just the right mood!!
Wonder why Tim was no singing the whole song? Great song with great piano by the master Mr. Rayner. How do you get these on Video DVD? I ordered the music but would like the Videos also........
gorgeous song.... time stands still on such classics.. thank god no teeny boppers have found it yet and wrecked it

love this stuff :-) was sorry to see that the Finns walked away from the 2nd album and these people had to get guest singers in to do the job?

@runninglikewind I agree, I still like Time better, I just think he's lost some of his range. He is the John Lennon to Neil's Paul.

I think this is perhaps one of Tim Finn's best songs. Tim Finn has so much emotion in his music.

Yeah, I know, but Tim's voice wasn't up to it at the time. He was having a lot of trouble.

mainly cos tim looks completely pathetic next to neil no matter wat he does.

I completely disagree! I mean, I love Neil Finn, but he sounded /awful/ compared to how Tim sounds when he sings it.
Disappointing, hated the orchestra.
