During biblical times, people lived in low-lying areas around the coasts, it was during the time when the glaciers were melting, so all those areas flooded. And those areas WAS the world to those people.

Also, they diddn't have directors like Roland Emerich or movies back then, so Noah's Ark was proboly the worlds first disaster story.

There is no way storms can cover the entire world. People see movies like The Day After Tormorrow or read stories like Noah's Ark and take them seriously.

I study the weather and the situation of a global storm is meteorlogicly implausable. Even if one were to occur, it would have to feed on water so it would pull it from the surface. It would suck up as much moisture as it drops. Lower lying areas would flood, but not the whole world.

The video is fun, and generally good, but sadly the point about the animals freezing and not breathing is wrong. If the Earth magically gained enough water to cover Everest, that would displace the atmosphere so that the ambient temperature and pressure at the arc would be equivalent to that of sea level today.

A more correct point would have been that the arc could not be simultaneously cold enough for a seal and hot enough for a tropical reptile.

@dcarrera01 i don't think so. if the atmosphere was displaced upwards, the same amount of gas would occupy a larger volume than it does now (just like the walls of a baloon thin out if you blow it up bigger), the pressure would fall and so would the temperature. the column of air over each square of area on earth would be shorter, therefore less pressure=lower temperature. lower pressure also=lower partial pressure of oxygen=hypoxia.

@castelgandalf: Good idea but wrong. The radius of the Earth is 6,370 km. Push everything up by 10 km (more than enough to over Everest) and you've only increased the volume by 0.3%. That's roughly equivalent of going up a hill 30 meters high.

Earth's mountains and atmosphere are only a tiny film around the Earth. If you could grow the radius of the Earth enough to do what this video says, you'd be adding enough mass that you'd also have to think about the effect on Earth's gravity.

@dcarrera01 good rebuttal. maybe, but if you are going to compare 10 km of flood as a percentage, it should be of the thickness of the atmosphere (roughly 100km), not the diameter of the entire earth.(10/100=10%) i'm too lazy to crunch the numbers, but feel free to do so :D

The volume of the atmosphere is equal to the surface area of the Earth times the height of the atmosphere (close enough for a thin atmosphere like Earth's). If you add water to displace the atmosphere upward, the only reason why the volume increases is because the surface area increases. The surface area is equal to 4*pi*R^2 where R is the distance from the center of the earth to sea level.

@truetruthusa There IS a force; gravity! I invite you to research this, but to summarize the Earth is falling towards the Sun. There is nothing to slow the Earth down (an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force). The Earth is also moving at an angle such that as it falls it never hits the Sun. If you google it or look it up on wikipedia I am certain you fill find illustrations and a more intensive explanation. ALWAYS research before jumping to conclusions. =)

One explanation the fundies have offered: Noah did not ned to take every species of animal on the ark; he just took general types, and the animals evolved after they left the ark. I'll let the irony of that sink in. :)
