A lot of institutions use "tough love" but I'm not sure why people use this as a justification, even if it hadn't resulted his death.

The game is really rough on those athletes, rougher than in a lot of other sports, but sports are no stranger to violence and extreme training.

I think it's harder for people to see this as a problem with the sport's culture itself, people will look at this as an isolated incident and move on because they love the game so much.

Sounds like it's in definite need of reform, though, and many of the media outlets there bear some of the responsibility for that, if this is true.
