  • The mantis shrimp punched the Rubix Cube into submission and that's how it was solved.

  • take a joke guys

  • thats bullshit until i see the whole clip of it actually doing it from beginning to end without cut out frames.

  • people use the tecnology of today to teach fish to solve rubix cubes ... genius

  • Excellent work, now back on the barbie.

  • Ok I call bullshit

  • Mantis SHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMP...the dick of the sea....

  • Is it an insect fish

  • he stole it becauz he's jealous of his friend always playing rubiks cube :D

  • Can't mantis shrimps see hyperspectral colors? No wonder it went crazy over a rubik's cube.

  • He solved it like how you normally solve all your problems. By the beating the shit out of them.

  • WTF it actually solved it?!!! O.O

  • motherfucker Y U TRICK ME? :(

  • lol, wow some people just dont get it " is it real " i saw a hand ..." lol its all real,... what you see anyway. good job rob , funny stuff. what some people get worked up over?? lol.

  • bitch please, i bet he uses beginners method

  • If this is the result of you guys "lapsing" then for the sake of science please keep doing so

  • Aaaaaaaaaw cute

  • WTF THAT WAS FAST

  • da'fuuuu??!?! smart ass shrimp say wahhh?!? O_o

  • I this this is a backwards video. They put a solved cube in, and it messed it up. Then reverse the fottage

  • @AKSoapy29 Looks more like they just gave him an unsolved rubix cube, did some cuts, and gave him a solved one at the end. Though If you bought the kind of cube you can build yourself and set it to be very loose, so that the shrimp could easily spin it, you might be able to do an uncut video of the guy solving the rubix cube by playing it backwards. ...Somebody do this!

  • the greatest FAKE ever!!!

  • Comment removed

  • this is bullshit!!

  • FAKE AND GAY

  • @PanshitoBMX No need to be so harsh with yourself. We love you anyway. ;)

  • Dedo arriba todos los que vienen de CC!!

  • 00:33- 00:34 you can see the hand =)

    its a nice puppet !!

  • Ni un solo movimiento, FAKE

  • QI ftw

  • i wish i could one of these by simply slappin the shit out of it...

  • Ok, now put an adult Blue Claw Crab in with Mantis Shrimp and see what happens. :)

  • I can see it now, bumper stickers saying my mantis shrimp is smarter than your honors student. =)

  • ahahahah funny ... but i prefear them boiled :)

  • I, for one, welcome our new shrimp overlords!

  • The funny thing about this video is that roy managed to actually piss people of by typing that this is not a fake hahah! Lol .. You people with your hate comments about this video being a fake are the real clows! Its hilarious how funny and stupid you actually manage yourself to look haha. Why the fuck do you think this guy is actually serious about a mantis shrimp solving a rubix! Its a shrimp for crist sake hahah!

  • How dumb do you think we are roy you tool!!!

  • like if you belive it's FAKE!

  • FAKE and... GAY!!!

  • @CommanderTato I'm unsure how you know the sexual preferences of the mantis shrimp in the video and fail to understand what that has to do with anything.

  • @cholebartholomew JAJAJA Im joking because the phrase "Fake and Gay" is overused like the arrow in the knee joke...

  • hahaha.

  • The mantis shrimp can see over 100,000 colors while the humans can only see around 10,000. think about that for a while, weather it be fake or real, it could be true

  • @darkhellhero and how the f**k can the shrimp MOVE the peaces? Maybe we should hire shrimps from now on to do our dirty works.

  • @kurdsson i said could, I'm just pointing out their amazing sight.

  • god damn it i cant even figure out those things.

  • somehow i want to believe it's true! let me say amazing!♥

  • I'm glad to see that someone (Blitzwolf44) got it!

    Roy

  • The title alone made me lol before i even clicked on the video. Thus it served its purpose - Bravo!

  • Fake. And perhaps "gay" would be an appropriate addendum to the preceding descriptor.

  • HEY LISTEN. its played in reverse. the forward shoot he is just mixing it up. and at 30 when he threw it. its just a forward played video of a shrimp throwing a already solved cube. case closed.

  • This would be a lot more believable if the video actually showed a "Mantis shrimp solving a Rubik's Cube" like the title suggests

  • FAKE - i'd like to see him turn the cube, not those eyes which aren't even looking at it. and why would it want to solve it - wouldn't it want to eat it?

  • @mikesavad It saddens me that we live in an age where we can't take a simple and obvious joke with chuckle anymore...

  • @BlazeBorginSL it wasn't that funny. and it dishonors all the other shrimp that worked so hard to get to this point...

  • @mikesavad I said chuckle, not laugh riot. Your second comment also made me chuckle. Thanks for brightening my day :3

  • i rather not look at his eyes, and look at him solve the solve the cube. fake

  • No fucking way.

  • Oh please, you know the shrimp just pulled all the stickers off and stuck them back on to solve it like most people do.

  • @burressjj1 why did you have to ruin the fun?? I wanted to figure it out on my own

  • Mine too but there were three pieces missing.

  • how did i get here from pot-bellied pigs?

  • Obviously its fake. The shimmering PLAY icon and 80s audio video quality suggests it was recorded on a VCR thus its old recorded footage. Besides this being impossible for anything besides a monkey, it would have to be proven in realtime without editing. Stupid fake..

  • @3KS26 You don't have any joy in your life, do you?

  • @Dentakulator

I consider sex and masturbation joy, don't you?

  • reverse footage FTW

  • get out

  • this is FAKE that's just a hand puppet!

  • VSAUCE TOPCOMMENT

  • I'm sorry...but you would have to film this in its entirety in order to even half-prove this. This isn't proof.

  • This is fake. It obviously took the stickers off and put them back on instead of actually solving it.

  • dude your not telling me this is actually real right lmfao

  • Fuck Amazing F2l And Pll Skip XD

  • So, where is the film of this shrimp actually moving the parts around? I don't see it. All I see are cuts where more of it looks solved.

I give you credit for editing skills and fooling many people though.

  • BS

  • Vsause anybody?

  • FAKE.

  • Look around you.

    Look around you!

Just look around you. Do you see what we're looking for?

    Correct! It's shrimp.

  • Good work. Amazing editing skillz! that is with a Z

  • OMG that thing is as smart as justin bieber

  • And somehow I still can't solve it!

  • Smart-ass.

  • man, i believe it, i just wish i could have seen it in one continuous shot.

  • its scary to know a shrimp is smarter than most humans

  • @Einahpets1007 considering it learned to do it, not exactly, because humans can all learn to solve a rubik's cube. Still extremely impressive if genuine though.

  • @BismuthWasTaken no matter how many times i try i cant figure out how to solve a rubix cube so i usually cheat by taking it apart then putting it back together so it is pretty impressive that a shrimp can solve one

  • I was there the entire shoot. There was no hand - period.

    Roy

  • @RoyLCaldwell For realz?

I welcome our new shrimp overlords.

  • @RoyLCaldwell do it again and ppl will believe it

  • everything is better with steel drum theme in the background.

  • I thought it was real, then i saw a portion of a hand.

  • Its got to go.

  • no fucking way

  • wut. show a real time laspe!!

  • .....I don't believe it solved it. Just looks like a bit of video editing

  • time to put it on the extinction list

  • @MrTuPadrote hahaha

  • whos here from Vsauce

  • this film is a fake. In the finish i see de hand of a people.

  • @teran86 lol "hand of a people" :D you meant *person :p

  • the cube is only a few turns away from completion, having a crustation learn to match colors is... someone beleivable I don't know much about mantis shrimp

  • Comment removed

  • is it just me or did it look like a puppet at 0:30

  • There was no human intervention at 0.34

    Roy

  • 0.34

  • Damn. It solved that faster than I could looking at the directions.

  • That's nothing, my dog just finished a 5000 piece jigsaw of the taj mahal.

  • @Darrylwalker1975 3D one too

  • That's one clever crustacean.

  • …but it still can't put together IKEA furniture.

  • I'm surprised that nobody has yet to teach a Mantis how to solve a rubiks cube and prove it.

A normal rubiks cube probally wouldnt work, but if one modifies one so it will be possible for a Mantis to manipulate it, then I'm pretty certain you could teach him how to solve it, especially if you make him associate the solved cube with food.

  • mantis shrimp have 9 photo color receptors in their eye. humans have 4. mantis shrimp can see more than double the amount of color that we can see. meaning that there are colors that are invisible to us.

its impossible to even imagine a color you have never seen before. i would love to see the world through their eyes.

  • @formusicplaylist1 I doubt they're seeing colors we have never seen before - they're just much better at distinguishing different shades of color than humans.

  • Need proof of the animal flipping the pieces to lift my disbelief, not 2 different footages of the same animal with the cube solved in the last one.

  • not even :0

  • 0:34 it's a hand...it's like a gloves thingy..

  • @clio427 .....no...

  • mantis shrimp is such an appropriate name......just look at the eyes of the thing.

  • i was guessing he would smash it to bits! can you guys send me a mantis shrimp? im freaking obsessed with them and its hard to find one out here... i keep hoping a reefer will find one in LR and give it to me..... im building a home JUST for one of these guys...

  • haha

  • Comment removed

  • ok its faked... granted the mantis thought it was a food item but i doubt it would seriously solve the thing. they are problem solvers no doubt but unless it was trained to solve it for a treat it wouldnt bother...

  • The title has solving in quotation marks, the description calls it a "lapse" out of "fun".

I don't see how anyone could feel tricked by this oh, so gruesome "fake".

  • I'm not trying to deflate the incredible power of the mantis shrimp, but I like how the mantis shrimp solved the fucking rubik's cube off screen, without us seeing how he did it. I also like how this is apparently a recent film as the uploader is apparently a part of this research, even though the film looks like it came from the 70s.

  • It could have been faked, that's a possibility. But, we can't exclude the possibility that it was actually solved by the creature. The former seems more likely, the ladder not so much.

  • @Muffinmanv2 Film is reversed.

  • @Muffinmanv2 The ladder? There's no ladder in this video.

  • fake

  • it didnt seem like it could negotiate even one turn of the cube.

  • @Schutzstaffel23 Ya i really dont believe that the mantis shrimp did. I would believe it if they showed time lapse camera of one continious shot. But you cant just say that the mantis shrimp actually solved it. I cant 100% discredit it but i can 99%

  • @troubledseed exactly. i wouldn't even question it's intelligence or if its eyes can pic up a wide variety of colours. The only thing i would say is its claws can't manipulate something like a Rubik's cube.

  • lol

  • ok. NOWWW i feel dumb =<

  • Dammit a mantis shrimp can solve a rubik's cube and I can't

  • that was so cool

  • *continuing*

presenting the cube [to the creature] in various states of solution, the producers cut together a sequence of the cube being "solved" along with some eye cleansing transitions between the differing states. BBC, National Geographic, and whomever else owns or owned rights to this, simply used this short film as an anecdote, to engage and involve the viewers in ways little else can for such a niche market of documentaries at the time.

  • this is in fact a genuine video. nowhere in the film, title, or description does it say that this creature is solving or has solved the rubiks cube. the title does, however, say that the video depicts the creature "solving" (scare quotes used to indicate irony) the cube. moreover, the description clearly shows the film was put together as entertainment value. *continued in next post*

  • Stop uploading rubish. People don't know what is real and what is fake anymore. Stop this fake rubish.

  • FAKE!

  • omg i cant solve it sometimes ...

  • Obvious hand puppet is obvious.

  • this is bullshit right?

  • The big issue I see is that we never see it turning the parts of the cube. Although they do move lightning fast it is not plausible that they would be hitting the cube just right to make segments turn 90 degrees.

  • Mantis Shrimps are just the most badass thing in the ocean. Be glad they aren't the size of cars.

  • Kill this bitch! If you have it on a Reef aquarium she will kill everything!

  • haha ;DD, źle spermutowała ostatnią warstwe pfff

  • This seems fake - it looks like a man has thrown a perfect cube out when the camera skips at the end. I wish it was true :(

  • it belong in harvard!!!!

  • are u telling me this thing is smarter than me?

  • @jaqu19 if the shoe fits, where it.

  • @jaqu19 XDDD

  • Chuck Norris of the ocean, LMAO!!!!!!!

  • LOL

  • Not only do they have the strongest punch, they LEARN too?!!!

    Damn nature, you awesome! :D

  • @GodofFerrets13 OHJEEZ. It's district 9 IRL ._. pretty soon they'll scavenge from shipwrecks and make lightning guns or some sh*t O_O

  • keep the fuckin camera on the cube...

  • SEEMS LIKE DISTRICT 9 TO ME :D

  • Their is a hand in that! You can see it when he throws the cube out of his house!!!

  • Seems legit...

  • Their was a hand in a shrimp costume. Yuh can kinda see it at the end

  • so you're saying that this shrimp knew the goal of a rubiks cube is to match up all of the colors? if this is real than that is f***ing BOSS! honestly i thought i was gonna get rick roll'd when i clicked this link XD

  • Just because it didn't physically turn it doesn't mean it wasn't able to recognize its completion. Which in and of it's self is pretty amazing.

  • Just because it didn't physically turn it doesn't mean it wasn't able to recognize its completion. Which in and of it's self is pretty amazing.

  • I just thought it was going to punch it into pieces. Pretty cool.

  • I'm pretty sure this is real yes it is kicking the shit out of it cuz it's all different colors but then when it was done kicking the shit out of it it realized all sides are one kind of color so it just left it....does this mean they're neat??

  • Comment removed

  • I've understood the trick : the shrimp wears a headset and someone tells it how to do.

  • How would you teach a mantis shrimp to do this? I want one.

  • try pausing at 34 you can sorta see a hand

  • I don't doubt that such an animal could solve a Rubix Cube. After all, their brains are wired differently. What I doubt is its ability to recognize the desired final state of the cube.
