One question for gymnastics fans...do you think that during the Beijing olympics the number of mistakes in the gymnastics competitions, both artistic and rhythmic, was unusually high if comparing the 2008 games with say, the USSR vs USA era?

I can be wrong of course, but as i seem to recall there was this never-ending struggle to attain perfection during the "cold war" olympics and even well into the 1990s...do you think this impression is correct?

I agree completely, nowadays its all about difficulty. So athletes are forced to train bigger harder skills, which decreases the margin of error.

i think Pavlova should have scored like 9.100 but fair enough on the judges because they couldn't see and could of given her a 1.5 penalty but then she might of had sloppy line you see and if she did have line like that they wouldn't have been able to see it but she's experianced enoughed 3rd Athens i think it was all Pavlova not the Judges

This was the 2nd olympic that Pavlova was robbed... in Athens, she could get a medal (till gold) if the wasn't underscore her at all-around final.

In Beijing same thing at beam final, she would get a bronze.

Unhappily she got 0 on vault. But, for me, she was between the medalists.

The real point is not the places they got at olympics, the real point are the things they present to us.

Diego Hypolito and Anna Pavlova will always be in the hearts of the people who loves beauty in gymnastics!

Unfortunately, guys have it more difficult in gymnastics. On the bar, it's a lot more weight to hold, and more to balance, not to mention guys are naturally less flexible than girls. And in the sport it's a one shot deal, because by the time the next olympics comes around you're pretty much too old to be competitive, because you have to be fairly young to do the sport.

Actually guys tend to be in the sport longer than women. Like Fabian Hambuechen of Germany, he was 16 at Athens and he's still competing, or Cassina and Pegan who have been in the sport since 1992 and 1998 respectively. Guys do have to do 2 more events than the women but the men tend to not have the emotional and psychiatric abuse that the women tend to have (like eating disorders).

All of these athletes have accomplished *so* much, yet you know that for the rest of their lives, this is moment they'll replay over and over again, that they'll cry about over and over again.

These moments will haunt them forever, and they don't deserve to live with that type of pain.

I wish they had scored her vault and I felt really bad for her but it was pretty much impossible for her to medal. She needed a 9.9 execution score on the second vault to tie for bronze and they weren't giving away any 9.9s in Beijing. She got a 9.6 in the qualification for a better vault than she did in finals. She would have probably finished 5th if they scored her.

I felt bad for him too. To me it looked like he fell because he was going for a stuck landing and came up short. And now he's lost his sponsors and thinks it's because of his failure to win and that makes it even worse. His club is also getting rid of funding for gymnastics but I think they're going to be able to get local support to keep the program. He's had a rough year.

Gold??? I don't think so. Izbasa's "A" score was 6.50. Fei's "A" score was "only" 6.30. Besides, Izbasa was very solid on her routine. Her "B" score is also high. But Fei would definetely get a medal...
