As a Mets fan, maybe a terrorist would bomb Citi Field (when empty of course!!) and we could get a real stadium with the insurance money. Now...I'm joking of course!!
I was at Shea Stadium on September 6,1986. The New York Mets played the San Diego Padres. Another one of the Mets' wins that led to the World Series shortly thereafter.
AND, BY THE WAY, I'VE BEEN TO THE OLD YANKEE STADIUM, TOO. DESPITE THAT OTHER TEAM'S SUCCESSES THERE, WHEN COMPARED TO SHEA, YANKEE STADIUM WAS A DEATH TRAP
Shea Stadium first place I ever saw a MLB game back in 1965. Mets vs Dodgers. Don Drysdale vs Warren Spahn. Drysdale broke up a one to one tie by hitting a home run in the 7th inning. I'll never forget Shea
I still haven't been to Shitty Field even though it's been 3 years since my beloved Shea was demolished...I don't like the stadium,I don't like the team,I don't like the owners. The Mets just as well as moved..Ahhh to go back a few years.Just more more night game at Shea...sigh.
Lemme tell you, Citi Field is a dead park. When Shea was packed it was the loudest place on Earth. When Citi Field is packed, it is dead silent during key spots. I stood up during a key spot and some guy told me to sit down. I could not believe it! Baseball is not what it used to be. It is now just a business not the sport it was in the olden days.
That's a little harsh; blaming the stadium for the fans' sudden rejection to, as the classic song goes, "root root for the home team." I understand how you feel, but I would just blame the fans and not the Mets' new home.
I wonder if the fans at the new Yankee stadium are behaving the same way.
Yes it is stupid, there is no comparison to citi and shea number of seats down to square footage determines the way the place sounds and plays, and there are things to do at citi , unlike shea, people are up and about half the game checking it out and sightseeing, give the place a chance. One day youll be telling your kids about all the memories from citi . Be good
@fdny442 Yeah, hey, let's all go to a ballgame to sight-see. Let's all go to a ballgame to check out the large team stores and the shake shacks! Hey, every now and then, we might even look down unto the field to see what's happening in the game.
The fewer number of seats certainly does determine the way a place sounds... Citi was constructed with over 12,000 less seats. These seats came out of the upper deck. Field level seats in Citi, though, increased. Real fans are scammed. Noise level down.
@jericho360 Shea was the Mets. CitiField is named after a faceless corporation and modeled after an old stadium of another team that is still actively playing on the West Coast. The Wilpons were Dodgers fans as kids and so they knocked down the Mets home in order to erect a monument to another team. When the Dodgers play at Citi Field the Mets should wear their away jerseys. Shea stadium used to rock.. literally rock.. during big plays. I agree with you... Citi field is neutered in comparison.
This kinda brings a tear to my eye. It served its time. I can remember when I was young, I always wanted to see a game there. I was 8 at the time. I really got into baseball and watched alot of Met games on WWOR in Upstate NY. It was the only cable channel we got and i got into Mets baseball. Finally i saw two games there back in the early 90s, glad i did.
it was so sad to say good bye to shea. I will truely miss it. Shea was a home away from home. watching that on t.v bought a lump to my throught.all the amazing met games, the energy the excitement. i wish i went to that game, just for the ceremonies. good Bye shea 1964-2008
@jet4212006 I, TOO WAS AT THE LAST AGME AT SHEA STADIUM. I CRIED FOR HOURS. THEN, I DECIDED TO RISK GOING TO JAIL BY SITTING RIGHT IN FRONT OF GATE C WHEN IT FINALLY CLOSED LODGING MY ETERNAL PROTEST AGAINST TEARING OUR HOME DOWN. CITI FIELD WILL NEVER, REPEAT, NEVER BE THE SAME TYPE OF HOME THAT THE GREAT SHEA STADIUM WAS, IS , AND ALWAYS WILL BE. LONG LIVE WILLIAM A SHEA STADIUM FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Somehow, I think the plane flying overhead was a perfect (though accidental) touch to the closing ceremony. After all, air traffic into LaGuardia has always been a staple of Mets games (and I believe that's where the Jets got their name from).
i tried going to the last game...they were sold out when i tried which made me upset...then they lost and i just started crying, a while since ive done that..was hoping they'd make the playoffs and for shea to last a couple weeks more..anyway im gonna miss shea and so are the millions of fans...LETS GO METS!!!!!goodbye shea...but hello citifield (still dont think they should tear down shea there's like, nothing wrong with it)
i cried for the first time since 2006 when they lost game 7. i was only 12 back then though. it was really hard to go to sleep, then yankees fans abused me the next day. it was the worst couple days of my life

wow you mets fans are sore losers. i was reading the paper today, and half the fans left the damn ball park just cuz they missed the playoffs..some fans you are. mets suck shit go phillies

yea right. do you know how many people citizens bank park accually holds? standing room included, about 48,500. the vet had about 65,000 and all the fans stayed there IN THE RAIN. Sold out game, stands were packed EVEN THOUGH they were out of the playoff race. They stayed cuz they are loyal
That may be but the fact is that the mets let down all their fans the same EXACT day as the last game at Shea. If they had been previously eliminated of course all the fans would stay to see the last game...even in the Snow!
bullshit, pure bullshit. I watched a late season Mets-Phillies Game in 2000 at the Vet and it felt like shea south and the place was only 1/4th filled
