  • Hari hits exactly the right mark. The Pope should be held to account for his Criminal acts. He is the head of a criminal conspiracy amounting to Crimes Against Humanity. It is an international disgrace - anyone else as head of an international organisation would be standing in the dock.

  • I agree with Hari here, despite the fact he's been a very naughty boy.

  • Hari calls for the arrest of the Pope??? Surely he plagiarised this off of Peter Tatchell!!!

  • Did he really give them an interview? Or did he merely give them a video of quotes which he had already given to other people and string them together through the use of electronic wizardry, so he only appeared to be in the same studio?

  • The Indepeis the primary causendent has a serious credibility gap...Hari is the primary reason why.

  • Johann Hari World known con artist, plagiarist and journalist liar !!!!

  • @Fcvidal3

Someone with his credibility issues is not ideally placed to talk about the credibility issues of others. Why get rid of religion, if the alternative is hypocrisy from an entirely different source ? Lack of religion is no defence against evil - Mao's lack of religion did not stop him killing people. Atheists confuse evil done despite the principles of one's religion or philosophy or world-view with evil that is the consequence of them. Child-abuse is evil & opposed to Christianity

  • Hari speaks sense here but...

If you want to see what Johann Hari thinks of child rape you should read his 'nom de guerre' here:

    eu.nifty.org/nifty/gay/incest/little-brother-learned-to-be-a-whore

  • Smart panel.

  • Worse than muslims these cunts!!!!!

  • @TheTrimmTrab I wouldnt go that far but yes the catholicism seems to be a form of legalised child abuse

  • Hari lays out the facts, the others dither about celibacy.

  • its not the right time to arrest the pope. the fact that so many people supports him inevitably gives him immunity from morality. although this is unfortunate. an attempt to arrest him will cause further conflicts and possibly even deaths of innocent individual. there is no god.

  • careful now

  • The host looks like a British Aaron Eckhart

  • 4:14 the important part

  • Dwon with this sort of thing!

  • Evil stems from the Roman Catholic Church's grasp on society. This year Lord Narayan is going to start a verbal war for what is right in the hearts of man.

    Om Namo Narayana

  • Every one who watches this Johan Hari is my uncle its true check my vids I say my full name trust me he is my uncle

  • @dryclips whether he's your uncle or not, he's a great man and he's my hero.

  • OK LET'S JUST SPEAK THE TRUTH!!! The Roman Catholic Church is nothing but Satanic, Babylonian, Pagan Sun/Idol worship with a thin veneer of Christianity to fool the masses!(pun intended) I know there are many good Christians in the RCC who need to follow Gods words and "Come out of her my people." She is the "Great Whore"," The Mother of Harlots." The pope is "The Little Horn," "The Man of Sin." The Papacy is the system of "the anti-christ"! Ratzinger is satan's minion!!!

  • The Catholic church is a fucking pantomine, completely divorced from real life. Worse than that, it tries to impose medieval values upon societies desperately struggling for modernity.

  • please check out the wanted sign i made and posted EVERYWHERE when the pope came to britain(well scotland)

  • nice one arry

  • As the book of Revelation (from the new testament) says Rome will be brought down to the ground in the last days... And believe it or not it's happening before our own eyes

  • He's just jelous about not being molested by a priest...

  • @FUQUKUNT I think you're revealing a lot about yourself FUQUKUNT :)

  • @alexvegas Sorry during droughts I don't suddenly objectify children sexually. You could argue it at 2 levels about older but under age teens & the younger but the debate is not about that but the cover up.

The Catholic Church has made this an issue for itself by failing to treat these priests as criminals. I would imagine paedophiles now target the priesthood for precisely that reason.

  • @hattonroader You're both correct, in my mind. It's not so much as priests "having a drought", but knowing that they will never -ever- get sexual gratification in all their years in the priesthood (the majority of the time this tends to be for the rest of their lives) and this warps human sexuality and perhaps even biology.

I definitely also think you're right in that a lot of paedophiles are attracted to the church for the fact that they can work in a position of trust with many children.

  • Tell it like it is Johann....all the more power to your bow.Good man.

  • What has celibacy got to do with Paedophilia? It's a logical fallacy.

  • @hattonroader It's got a lot to do with pent up sexual frustration... and children are easy prey for pent up men who are sworn to celibacy. They presumably thought they could easily keep them quiet.

  • sorry, hate to but in but maybe (just maybe) these preists were peadophiles before and joined the church to get at children? Same goes for peadophile teachers, gym coaches, babysitters, male nurses, bus drivers, garbagemen.... the list grinds on.

  • What is the guy 5 minutes in talking about? I don't care how Catholics manage their faith. I don't give a solitary crap about that, what they chose, what they believe, how they manage their 'eternal soul'. This is not on. This is quite simple: this is a case of systematic child rape and abuse, and the careful protection of their sadistic abusers.

As Hitchens said, justice is coming.

  • Let's stand up for what's right for once. This man should be arrested, and at the very least warned he will if he enters the country.

The point about the BBC doing the same thing is spot on. All you have to do is say this is profoundly disgusting. Stop perpetuating impunity now, this is not okay. They don't get away with it. Come on for fuck sake.

  • strange. Here they are screaming for the arrest of the Pope when they refuse to say the same thing about some African leader who is responsable for genocide or a saudi shikh that beheads people who leave Islam and rules his nation with an iron fist. I hate to piss in your lemonade but a little prioritisation please.

  • @Richierua If an African leader who had been committing mass genocide visited the country I'd be saying the same thing. And I think systematic child rape with protection leading right up the hierarchy of an organization is a priority.

  • @Richierua You must keep in mind that relations with the middle east and developing countries are terse and filled with tension. They tend to be extremely hostile to anyone who tries to push their own laws and politics upon them. If we arrested a saudi shiekh and took him to trial in another country, muslims everywhere would be clamoring for war/taking him by back by force.

  • let them. See how well macheties do against tanks.

  • the closer the visit gets the less tv coverage of the arrest bid there is.

    conspiracy !!! ::))

  • Go ahead and try you Limey faggot, you'd look pretty funny with a Swiss Guard halberd up your ass. Although I'm sure you're pretty well used to having large objects in there...lol

  • Johann Hari, the men.

  • Not sure what scares me more. That a person like Hari thinks the way he thinks or that there are people stupid enough to buy into his lies.

  • @Uteko95 A - fuckin'-men . . . why don't we go visit deathrow inmates and see what they think. Or how about a drug cartel or gang - at least they have the balls to admit they are criminals. Or how about your local psychiatric or mental ward. Seriously - it's sickening to hear this gibberish and watch people gawk and drivel in awe and respect. I would prefer to ask a child for a moral view than someone choked by a collar.

  • Well said Johann, great article in the 'Independent (09.09.2010)' too.

  • The institution of church and priesthood is part of the catholic faith, that's what defines catholicism in contrast to protestantism.

  • Celibacy has nothing to do with pedophilia. You need to get away from that idea. Pedophilia is power abuse

  • I can't wait for the day when absolute respect for faith and religion ends. The day when I can open a newspaper or internet news and NOT see a religious talking head babbling in incoherent bronze age garbage in support of their continuously sickening attrocities. Stop asking these mental deficients their opinions on important matters of life, ethics or truth - they have nothing to add and everthing to take.

  • @rictusgate

    amen!

  • @rictusgate

I seem to doubt your dream will ever happen in your lifetime. Today, there is only around 1% of Athiests in the world.

  • @TwoStar17.......

    Dream on.

99% percent of statistics are made up on the spot and you have provided a perfect example ;)

  • @rictusgate

Absolute respect for faith and religion does not exist; and what's more, it has nothing to do with this problem. The Pope is not protected in this case because he's a religious leader, he's protected in this case because he's the head of a state. If you honestly think that his immunity has anything to do with people thinking he's a "holy" guy, you don't understand enough about the problem.

  • @rictusgate Brilliantly put

  • they got away with killing and torturing people during the inquisition, so they can get away with this.

  • "sex scandal"? wrong. it's a "child rape scandal" or a "child toture scandal" get it right.

  • Arrest the pope!

  • Hari nails it with his first statement: There should be no special treatment for institutions who declare themselves as 'holier than thou'; they should not be considered exempt from ANY criminal matters, especially those as repugnant as child rape. What has happened is utterly disgraceful, and it is indicative of an organization (Catholicism) that is severely incompatible with human nature and so out of touch of modern ethical values. Those who committed and condoned the rape should be punished.

  • Johann is very smart and a good debater and while he is a very endearing gay man I also find it amusing that he makes a nice looking lesbian as well.

  • Estler is a disgrace. Consider what he is saying....an organisation systematically rapes kids, covers it up at the highest level, persecutes those who expose it and Eslter keeps chipping in with his apologist message about how we shouldn't forget the ''good work'' the paedophile organistion sometimes does with those they target.

Estler is a disgrace. Not only is he biased in favour of perverts but he actively defends their organisation.

Estler should be dismissed from the BBC at the very least.

  • Nergal from Behemoth may get two years in prison for insulting the church. The pope will probably get nothing.

  • i just wanted to say. i dont know in others countries but i'll just gues its same. People who work for church (monks etc.) cannot be judged. They have imunnty. Now imagine if somebody rapes you, your child or some person you know. Police should arrest them and put them to the jail (i would castrate them as well but its inhuman). Now, if somebody from church does it, nothing exept talking happens. Because they are imune! I mean i'll make my own religion give myself imunity and go killing people?

  • their is no salient argument for anything other than the questioning and improsonment of the pope and guilty members of the church

  • The Catholic Church should be taken out of business.

  • @amorphousguy Don't trust the media! do the research for yourself before you pass judgement!

  • cage the rat...jail the pope

  • What would a sane, law-abiding person think if the "average Joe" said something like, "Hey, we know our co-workers are raping children, but we need to keep this secret, and we can't notify the police."? Well, I know what I would think: Average Joe is sick pervert, liable for arrest. And that's what I think the Pope is, a sick, self-serving pervert. Arrest him.

  • Hari really irritates me with his style, but he's a fantastic humanist and I have a lot of respect for him. He makes some great points here, and is completely right.

  • Johann Hari is excellent.

  • Between 1.5% and 5% of Priests have been involved in sex abuse in the last 50 years, that means 98.5% to 95% of Priests have never been involved in sex abuse. You are 100 times more likely to be abused by your teacher than by a Priest.

The Church is doing it all it can to help the victims. But perspective must be given.

  • @xtrashed ... it is not just the priests that commit the sex abuse but the whole organisation that is complicit in the cover-up, and that includes all priests that didn't report abusive behaviour to the police that was committed by their colleagues. The whole catholic organisation is rotten to the core.

  • @col1611

There was no global cover-up. Nobody, nowhere, no time, no way, no how knew the extent, depth, or horror of this scourge, nor how to adequately address it, wrote New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan. No one had the knowledge necessary to orchestrate anything on a global scale. The crisis arises from individual cases, distant from each other in time and place, which have hit the press simultaneously.

  • @xtrashed : Are you fucking kidding me or have you not read the Crimen Sollicitationis that Johann Hari is referring to?

  • @geodesicks

Why are you listening or taking seriously anything a self described anti-theist has to say about the Catholic Church?

  • @geodesicks

Crimen Sollicitationis did not threaten excommunication of people who revealed "rape and torture" of children by priests. On the contrary: it imposed not only a duty to denounce such crimes (and the lesser offence of solicitation) to the bishop, but the automatic excommunication of anyone who knowingly failed to do so.

  • @geodesicks

The goal was to ensure that clerical misconduct which, by its nature, was likely to occur in private, did not remain secret and unpunished.

  • @xtrashed That makes no sense! You are saying that 0.015x100 or 150% of teachers (or 0.05x100 or 500%) are abusers!

This is a false arguement, anyway, akin to being stopped for speeding and yelling at the cop that he should have pulled over that other guy who was going faster. Or really, in this case being caught raping and yelling that the cops should be out catching other rapists, not you.

Moral behavior without the bible? They don't seem capable of maintaining moral behavior -with- it.

  • @AlienRelics

I'm not making up these statistics! These come from Hofstra University researcher Charol Shakeshaft looked into the problem, and the first thing that came to her mind when Education Week reported on the study were the daily headlines about the Catholic Church.

''[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem?'' she said. ''The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.''

    cbsnews . com/stories/2006/08/24/opinion/main1933687.shtml

  • @xtrashed Thank you!!! It's so rare to find someone that has actually done some of their own research on this! What a breath of fresh air!

  • How does one explain the fact that both fathers and mothers have abused their children? Celibacy is no more the cause of pedophilia or abuse than marriage is... In fact, research suggests that sexual abuse is no higher among Catholic clergy than any other area of society ; indeed, the incidence is lower.

  • This man is talking nonsense. There is NO EVIDENCE that the Pope covered up any abuse, in fact Pope Benedict has done more than anyone to get rid of what he calls 'filth.' No one is going to arrest the Pope, because you can't! Why should an innocent man, be arrested, Johann is crazy!

  • Johann Hari is wrong about almost everything. He is talking rubbish about the Pope he just wants to use the sex scandal to attack the Church

  • @relarerfhjk : He is referring to a document called the "Crimen Sollicitationis", which Ratzinger sent out to all diocese in the world where there were allegations of child rape and abuse. Wikileaks leaked it in 2003. Look it up. The first paragraph instructs the reader to file it in utmost secret into the diocese's archives. The following paragraphs are ghoulish instructions on how to extract oaths of perpetual silence from raped children with the fear of excommunication.

  • its baffling that one man in that panel is talking about reality and what it really matters and the others are going on about reform and celibacy. fuck all that the church can do what it wants to change later. this is a criminal matter now. Arrest ALL the conspirators in child rape including the ringleader pope

  • It isn't celibacy that the Catholic Church needs to end, it is the rape of children and the systematic cover-up of those rapes. Arrest the Pope already!

  • Michael Goldfarbs comments about priest celibacy are off topic and say nothing about the heart of the matter which is: "Is this is a criminal case or not?"

Not all priests are pedophiles. No one is saying this. We are talking about why there is a systematic coverup policy within the RCC that goes to the highest rung on the ladder and did the Pope have a hand in any of it.

Stop using misdirecting the topic when the outcome doesn't suit you.

    Face it.

    If priests w

  • Never heard of Johann Hari before this video. But wow, well said!

  • Join the Arrest the pope group on facebook!

  • I notice Laura falling all over herself trying to let the cc off the hook. Laura, they got out of millions of dollars of compensation after they were busted for raping little aborigine children at "residential schools" (concentration camps for children) in Canada.

  • Wait a second, I just looked into Ratzi's 2001 letter, the "De Delictis Gravioribus" and those words that Johann Hari attributed to him do not occur there. The 2001 letter states that the "Crimine Solicitationies" approved by Pope John XXIII in 1962 still stands with a bullet point of added crimes (mostly stupid crap about desecrating the host, thanks PZ Myers!). Goes to show that child abuse isn't as recent as Catholics would like to think, but those words aren't Ratzi's, to be fair!

  • Is Pope Ratzinger the Beast of the Apocalypse?

  • That French guy ,straight after Hari makes some damning remarks, goes 'you're right lets go back to celibacy'...erh...remember back in those days when we had pedophile 'hunters' closing rings and out on streets...why aren't we doing this for the preists and instead talking about motives?

  • Looking forward to arresting the Pope in September? See all you decent folks there (I'd advise Pope fans to stay at home so you don't join him in the cells).

  • Th Catholic church has been a disgrace for years. Abused children, no condoms for Africans, men dancing around with wands and stupid hats......what a joke.

  • @jbarks10 they should be charged for international terrorism!

  • @jbarks10 I accidentally pressed thumbs down, I WANT TO PRESS UP. UP UP UP :'(

  • Close down the paedophile ring.. oops the catholic church

  • and while the united nations court at the hague holds the pope ,get someone to answer for bringing the dictators of the 20 th century to power ? If fact put on the charge sheet all the wicked acts since christendom was founded by constantine in the fourth century ?

  • there is no genuine economic recovery the world is on the brink of the second great depression ,the wealth of relgion is a very tempting target ?

  • tax exemption must end for these wealthy churches ? Oh but they run charitable institutions yes the same tax exempt charitable institutions where the children were raped ?the clergy viewed these instititutions as there private child brothels ,defenders of traditional family values pull the other one ?it has started in greece ,and kansas will follow suit soon ,and this is going worlwide ?

  • I think the Catholic Church is the bear sterns of organized pedophilia. I think however the pope needs to be arrested along with thousands of those twisted priest. By the way, I still believe a lot of those asshole from the real bear sterns should be put in the same prison as the pope and his cronies.

  • Hari is actually working class (check out his wikipedia page). Top bloke.

  • I like Hari and agree with him across the board. But unfortunately his tone is far too self-important and "elitist". People who aren't as "intelligent" will instantly but put off by his personality. It's sad but true. When will people like him and Dawkins learn that if you want to reach people you need to use those tried and trusted techniques that the "evils" of the world are so good at exploiting. Why are these intelligent people not smart enough to figure out the tricks of mass appeal?

  • @imjackcooper so we should dumb down for the masses? That would be a sad day for all intelligent people me thinks......

  • @imjackcooper condescending??? It's called moral outrage! Dawkins and specifically Hari in this clip are incensed at the child abuse, ignorance and criminal negligence inherent in religious institutions today. Where is your outrage??? Since when is moral outrage "self-important" or "elitist"?? We shouldn't even have to explain why we are so outraged to any decent human being, but apparently we have to, over and over and over again. Intelligence?? This is about empathy and kindness, not IQ.

  • @DevlinsDifference @oxgoth I am outraged. I just feel many of the liberal elite are out of touch with the common people. I see it all the time, I'm from a working class background. It's sad... but maybe we do need to "dumb down" in order to bring people back up. Btw my comments about Hari are in general, not just the video.

  • @imjackcooper Its a matter of not repeating the "evils" commited by the ones were (me, Dawkins et al) fighting, to stand by ones convictions and give no quarter.

  • @AgenonTaeche I agree and I shouldn't have phrased it as I did. My point is that when I go home I talk to people that are intelligent and have so much potential but have been dumbed down by their unfortunate surroundings, mass culture or simply wanting to fit in. The sad fact is these people hate those they perceive as elistist for a whole multitude of complex reasons. We have to somehow reach out on a mass, commercial level but were not doing it well enough

  • @AgenonTaeche . I LOVE people like Hari et al but theyre not getting through to the masses effectively as they could do. Sorry I am rambling, and am probably not educated enough to comment on these complex matters, Im simply commentating on what I see and its frustrating. Anyway their aren't many things more pointless than a youtube argument, I wish I never said anything.

Hari makes greats points in this video. That's all that matters. We all agree on that. I am on your side.

  • @AgenonTaeche @DevlinsDifference @oxgoth You know what - I'm sorry too all of you guys! This video really wasn't the place to start an argument about something that doesn't really relate to the seriousness of it's content. I'm way off topic. If I'm honest I didn't think anyone would even take any notice...

  • the pope deserves a court appearance and to stand before a human judge.

  • Johann is consistent and correct and he deserves the widest platform possible.

  • @tempelton

    well said!

  • @tempelton Agreed.

  • @tempelton Johann is correct about there being pedophile protectors in the hierarchy but he is factually incorrect about the Pope who has been at the forefront of the battle against abuse in the Church. The document he refers to Crimen sollicitationis pertains to sexual solicitation in the Confessional. There has never been any canon law prohibiting church officials to report crimes to state authorities. There are no cases where the Pope has covered up. He has acted against abusers

  • Hari for Prime Minister! Absolutely! Well done for speaking up and having a voice for so many that agree with you!
