The accepted view in science is that the universe is not infinite. Einstein said it was his biggest mistake in his life to assume that the universe was infinite. An infinite universe would also be contrary to the laws of thermodynamics.
@nosson77 I think you're thinking about the differences between a static and dynamic universe. Unless I'm misunderstanding some infinite implications that a static universe might cause (idk).
I'm an atheist because I see no poin in calling nature and the universe god. I just call it the universe and nature. I respect pantheism, but I see it pointless calling it god. Seem like undercover atheism.
i am a pantheist i never use the word god i do not belive in god. I do belive the forces of nature manifest them self in life i comune with this force in medidation. everyone has a destiny life is preordaind
i dont like word god word at all! (spell it N-A-T-U-R-E), but for me the "pantheism" clicks when you realise consciousness is just software running on atoms(etc), & atoms(etc) are everywhere.
i think the whole neg-entropy+"each-creature=cell-in-nature" thing correlates a little with ancient pagan life-force ideas.
I have to disagree here. How do you make this sentiment that all matter is conscious? That's a huge leap of faith to me.
Our consciousness is a product of the very complex systems evolved within us for billions of years. It is not inherit to matter, it is the product of certain systems of matter, at least when you take our mind as the example. The question - when does something become conciousness and where lieth the line is always difficult....
but to say that from this concludes that every bit of matter is conscious seems far fetched for me. Being conscious basically consists of sensory input, analyzing the data gathered from those sensors and making decisions upon this. Or perhaps we are using the term consciousness differently here? If you were even to say that the sum of all things is conscious, then I'd have little to argue against, as it is a system, but a single part of that system? A single optical nerve in our eye?
ok, while replying i was using gravity analogy - but then "black hole" is result of same gravity moving to new domain.
so, maybe the reflective feedback (ability to see self) means "consciousness of human" is like "gravity of black hole" and really is different to the other types :) compromise.
but i do like the idea that DNA might be like thoughts, just of a type we can't perceive.
pantheism to me follows from looking at the universe as software :)
Just curious, so you'd say that a computer must be conscious? :P
I don't think it's conscious.
Well, perhaps I went too far, yes, as in consciousness does not make descisions, that is the field of intelligence. But consciousness is definitely the product of our mind.
i hypothesise consciousness. maybe "rate of information flow" or "neg-entropy"/"complexity increase" .. ?
so a star+planet might have a tiny amount of "consciousness" (like gravity of a feather) but human brain has a huge amount (like gravity of a neutron-star); amoeba maybe like gravity of asteroid.
but look at evolution, but speed up time.. imagine gaia as giant computer with each dna-strand bouncing around biosphere carrying info .. still solving problem of max.entropy as humans do..
I'm a Pantheist with Atheistic Tedencies. Science has disproven everything religion has to offer. Paranormal phemonena doesn't not exist. it's like when you really want to believe in something that was very unexplainable and science disproves it........there is no other chioce but to leave it as a fake.
Believe is nothing more than believe its not an explanation l do not believe in a supernatural or a personal god with a mind, am agnostic about a supernatual and personal god its most unlikley and irrelevant for my live.
well do l have a little bit pantheism in me?
people are explanning nature all the time but they think it has a mind and makes things out of nothing.
"God" is just a personified metaphorical embodyment of what the whole universe is, "God" is just used to gain a better understanding of the universe. Remember ALL RELIGIONS ARE THE SAME, ALL RELIGIONS ARE BASED ON ONE THING. PANTHEISM!////////////
The Universe is Divine, sacred and Holy, we are unbalancing Nature Nature will prevail! All is interconnectedness. "Man didnot wieve the web of life, hes is mearly a strand in it"
I have had many thoughts towards God and the Universe all my life, but I never really felt "complete" in my views until I discovered the meaning of Pantheism. I went from being raised a non-churchgoing Catholic, to atheism, and then finally to Eastern religions/Buddhism, and Pantheism.
I believe that God is inseperable from everything, including myself. Everyone and everything is a piece of God. The Universe (and Knowledge) will continually unfold before us.
really nice said... i like the empathy i have a problem you may be able to help me with; i view God as the personification of existence. so i'm a deist in some ways, and (its seems) a pantheist in others. the major difference of thought is: Deism is about rationality PanTheism is about empathy ... but i just don't get why a person can't experience the extremes of both... so (for social categorization) am i a deist or pantheist? and is there a difference between pantheism and postmodernism?
Nothing comes from nothing. Background radiation could come from another source, The Universe is Intelagent. The bible says that god is in all things. Omny pressance demands this. You cannot give god anything because he already has it. Love is all he asks of us. I to find myself more pantheist then religious. God made man and man made religion. We are all part of one bigger thing that is trying to descover ourselves. Pease.
NikM755, you may want to actually look up the definition of Pantheist before you spout your bible thumping. The bible is nothing more than an astro-theological book of stories. Nothing more. It contradicts itself left and right. Pantheism simply means "All is God, God is all". Your bible even points toward Pantheism, Jesus said "I am the son of God, just as you all, are sons and daughters of God."
i would like to point out that christians, all throughout history, have only stripped identities, forced their religion on native cultures who respected the earth and live in harmony with it when they did not.christians have never lived in harmony with the earth because of their concepts of possession capitalism. IF jesus was the son of god he would be sorely disappointed in the people who claim to be his followers
I have been on a very interesting journey for the last six years, after realizing the religion I was born into was NOT what I was taught it was suppose to be!
In my opinion, any belief system that creates division or promotes hate among humans is a false and dangerous belief system.
Pantheism is beneficial for all living things, and the planet; I believe I have found my path! (smile)
understand the mechanics of the universe unless all human beings give up theorys that are aesthetically pleasing. I believe that in the end science will prevail, TRUTH will prevail.
The big bang may be wrong, it is simply a theory. To say the big bang is the only possible way in which matter, time and gravity has come into existence or flourished is absurd and theoretically obtuse. I think that it is possible, however perhaps we need to expand our knowledge of physics and astronomy far beyond what we have already accomplished presently before we make outlandish claims and place confidence in a theory such as the big bang. I think it will be difficult to EVER fully understan
I find your words very honest. Most people who I have known and claim to be religous are not honest about why they believe the way they do. To most, it is but a mere cover to be accepted by their peers and society.
I have slowly become a Pantheist myself, although I did not know of the definition until recently.
Those who do not accept Pantheism should ask themselves the following question.
Were the Native Americans who worshiped "The Great Spirit" wrong? Is not their god the same as yours?
thank you for posting this I am a Orthodox Christian well I was baptised that, but have never really been into religion until now. So with my beliefs I am not quite sure what I believe and I find this incredibly interesting. I appreciate it.
Taoism is a very dualistic ying yang type philosophy (tit for tat) pantheism is a God is the totality which leads to the paradox of unmeasurablity (or unknowablity) (paradox often appear as duality statements hence y they sound alike) they difference in taoism; God is not persumed only that their is only at least 2 acting forces at play
Nice to know their our other pantheism contemplating the universe :) I Define pantheism as a simple math equation
simply as the sum of all atomic particals. is this immeasurable sum conscience? probably not; yet all systems have a sum. this is what makes algebra and troubleshooting possible!
theres no need for name calling. you should believe what you know, and know what you believe. when Jesus does come back for us, we will all have to give an account of what we believe and give an account of all our actions and knowledge; what we learned, and what we refused to learn, and why some of us reject His Word. until then-we need to keep on learnin what we can,and NOT judge others for their beliefs. one day i believ the truth will be known. i cant wait. love 2 every1.sorry if i was harsh.
the Bible predicts people that have your kind of thinking..in Psalm 14:1 "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God."
i promise you, i have studied to see the Bible's accuracy in story and in history. it is intact. i cant believe in something just because people tell me to. and i am guessing to your best ability you have done the same. so i leave you in peace. what you say doesnt make sense to me. what i know, does. maybe one day we can speak in person and understand each other. till then
haha. look whos the ignorant one. SUN GOD? you musta gotten your Bible confused with mythology...you dont even know what you're arguing against. i looked up pantheism, its still a bunch of crap. pantheists need to look up the deifinition for God, they say god doesnt do anything or isnt personal, WELL THATS THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD "GOD. its a contradiction in terms, SO PICK ANOTHER WORD! how can the universe be your god when God is the one who created the universe? and if you can believe that the universe is your god, why cant you believe that God is who HE says He is through His Word? what is your god (universe) like? everything you just said, came out of someone else's mouth at some point, and cand be found in books. a mecnanic, doctor, a teacher, all professions and all knowledge comes from reading, but reading the right material is the issue.and you havent read enough.

yor belief that 'we are god' takes faith. you use faith the way Christians do with God. but just because you made that up, doesnt mean its right. try again.
if we came from a cell, where did the cell come from? maybe from matter? well. where did matter come from? your science says that the law of thermodynamics says energy has ALWAYS EXISTED, NEVER CAN BE DESTROYED, and NEVER CAN BE CREATED--(funny, christians say that about their God) but in the same breath, louis Pastuer says, "NOTHING can come out of NOTHING.something HAS to come out of something else.."you see the problem??? science contradicts itself and makes no sense at all!
how can the universe be your god when God is the one who created the universe? and if you can believe that the universe is your god, why cant you believe that God is who HE says He is through His Word? what is your god (universe) like? everything you just said, came out of someone else's mouth at some point, and cand be found in books. a mecnanic, doctor, a teacher, all professions and all knowledge comes from reading, but reading the right material is the issue.and you havent read enough.
i like your point of view.we do need spirituality.and you cant be wrong with pantheism.stay optimistic.we all need to rely on ourselves and eachother to solve the problems of the world.and to recognize the beauty of all life in this planet or the universe.
I AM a Pantheist. I am in awe at the events that have led to my life. I realize that my actions in this life will ripple in time forever. We are all miracles. This is God. Dumming down God, for those incapable of understanding, undermines the complexity of present time. We are lucky to be conscious. Enjoy the time you have. Recognize the importance of everything you do.
i foolishly thought i was first to think of this concept before i did research and realized Baruch Spinoza had created it. I think you did FANTASTIC explaining this and I would like to watch more videos from you to learn more.
I fully agree, though after serious thought to the definition of the word God, and its frequent misuse by the religions, I chose to take the added step of denying the word. So I now happily call myself a "sexed-up atheist". We have a wonderful universe!
Nice. Would you think this perspective is valid? That "BB" is God striving to see himself unconsciously. And we are his best introspecting parts so far. And that we will get better at it cause God would like to learn more about himself.
Have you heard of PanDeism (not me, but the philosophical concept) -- God becomes the Universe in order to experience things that God-as-God can not....
no, not so much. But my favorite metal album has this concept. From the start of the universe to the end. It is called "BE". Artist. Pain of Salvation.
The definition of pantheism must include that ultimate reality is in some sense conscious; otherwise, we simply have atheism with reverence for nature.
pantheism is no theism! that is schopenhauer's critique. we cannot define god. all theism does. so i object that, as well as the anti-thing as it is defining as well. our reality is our consciousness. 'ultimate' is 'doomed' to be 'fuzzy' ;)
As far as I know Buddhims is not concerned with the nature of everything, but with the path of non-attahment. This is why the Buddha was avoiding to answer theologial questions, so that people do not create any dogmas out of his teachings.
I like your reasoning. Atheism describes the lack of belief in gods as supernatural beings. Modern/western pantheism also lacks the belief in fictitious being and supernatural processes, however, god is now technically redefined and as it turns out the closest match to the technical description of god is the universe. Pantheists will love nature, admire the universe and the solar system and realize that we are all part of this one beautiful system.
That's why I choose it. In my view pantheists generally believe in God on a deeper level than most theists and believe in life on a deeper level than most atheists.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Thoughtful. gave you 5/5 because 1.you didn't use any meaningless words 2.you didn't attack anyone else's beliefs 3. you didn't attack anyone 4. your thoughts inspired me to think and feel, not just feel 5. your ideas show some real consideration before airing. Look forward to more.
Just as any atheist can argue that pantheism is a form of atheism, any pantheist may argue that the form of atheism they're thinking of is in fact pantheism. So the can more or less swing both ways in that argument.
You've basically watered down God and Spirituality to a point where, as you stated, you can't be wrong. My atheism is a specific rebuttal towards a personal, interventionist Gods. Worship of books, as you put it more aptly. Good first vid!
The concept of good and bad is in Dualist Pantheism, right?

how can the universe be your god when God is the one who created the universe? and if you can believe that the universe is your god, why cant you believe that God is who HE says He is through His Word? what is your god (universe) like? everything you just said, came out of someone else's mouth at some point, and cand be found in books. a mecnanic, doctor, a teacher, all professions and all knowledge comes from reading, but reading the right material is the issue.and you havent read enough.

i like your point of view.we do need spirituality.and you cant be wrong with pantheism.stay optimistic.we all need to rely on ourselves and eachother to solve the problems of the world.and to recognize the beauty of all life in this planet or the universe.

Recognize the importance of everything you do.

i also wanted to ask you, what is your take on Jesus?

i foolishly thought i was first to think of this concept before i did research and realized Baruch Spinoza had created it. I think you did FANTASTIC explaining this and I would like to watch more videos from you to learn more.

Cool. :)
[Pantheism, as atheism with reverence for nature, is an oversimplified definition.]

I fully agree, though after serious thought to the definition of the word God, and its frequent misuse by the religions, I chose to take the added step of denying the word. So I now happily call myself a "sexed-up atheist". We have a wonderful universe!
thequestionmarkofGod 4 years ago

PanDeism 4 years ago
no, not so much. But my favorite metal album has this concept. From the start of the universe to the end. It is called "BE". Artist. Pain of Salvation.

The definition of pantheism must include that ultimate reality is in some sense conscious; otherwise, we simply have atheism with reverence for nature.
Kessiel 4 years ago
pantheism is no theism! that is schopenhauer's critique. we cannot define god. all theism does. so i object that, as well as the anti-thing as it is defining as well. our reality is our consciousness. 'ultimate' is 'doomed' to be 'fuzzy' ;)

Schopenhauer's philosophy is simply Buddhism under a different guise. That is all. And Buddhism is a pantheistic belief.
Kessiel 4 years ago
Why do you think that Buddhism is pantheistic?

As Professor Dawkins said, "pantheism is sexed up atheism". I can dig that.
quasarsphere 4 years ago
Dawkins is an extremists who talks loudly in a metaphorical sense. Pantheism, like atheism, is just a word.

You've basically watered down God and Spirituality to a point where, as you stated, you can't be wrong. My atheism is a specific rebuttal towards a personal, interventionist Gods. Worship of books, as you put it more aptly. Good first vid!
