@briarbehr Yes, removing pups is optional. You tend to get more pups from a plant if you remove them. But if you prefer the more natural look of a clump of plants then just leave them on the mother plant.
@DRenae08 I use a slow release fertilizer when I pot up the pups. Either an osmocote/plantacote product which is high in potassium (K) or sheep manure pellets. This tends to be enough for most Aechmeas, Guzmanias Neoregelias, Nidulariums and small Vrieseas. Large Vrieseas can benefit from a very dilute (quarter strength) foliar orchid food once a month, but it isn't absolutely necessary. I don't feed Billbergias at all.
I bought my first 2 bromeliads last May (in flower) and the flowers are still there in mid Feb. One's looking a bit dry but the other seems almost as good as the day I bought it. They've been in a shade garden all the time. How long do the flowers normally last and should I be cutting them off? And will the original plant flower again?
One plant now has 3 smallish pups and the other has about 8 (this is the one with the drier flower). I'll wait until they get bigger then do the division.
@shambolicaus Hi, it sounds like you're doing quite a good job with your first broms (probably Guzmanias). The flowers on Guzmanias typically last about 6 months, but can vary depending on the hybrid and growing conditions. You can cut off the flower and remove any dead leaves whenever you like - it's purely a matter of aesthetics.
The original plant will only flower once, then produce pups which will each produce a flower.
thank you very much for this video. I bought bromeliad from lowes, i m new to this plant and do i need to change the pot size for healthy growing or keep it with the same container? and should i take out the pups from the plant? if not what will happen? how to watering the plant ? do i need to give it any plantfood? thank you.
@quicks2929 Hi, I can only give general advice without seeing what type of bromeliad, pot size etc. There's usually no need to repot. If you leave the pups on you'll get a natural looking clump of plants. Always water the whole plant so the leaf bases fill with water, but don't let the pot sit in water. It's safest not to add extra plant food, but if you think it needs some try liquid orchid food at quarter strength. I hope this helps. Cheers, Todd
@halahala21 Hi, it sounds like your plant is fine. It is normal for the older leaves to die back once it starts to produce new pups. You don't have to remove the pups, leaving them in place will give you a nice natural looking clump of plants. However if you do remove the pups it will encourage the mother plant to produce more (if it has enough strength left). I hope this helps. Cheers, Todd :-)
I just got two of these. And they are in bloom. How long does it normally take for pups to develop? Do the pups only form while the plant is in bloom?
@ShannaMidgett Hi Shanna, there isn't really a set time period. Some varieties are quicker than others, some can even pup before they flower. If the plants were flowering when you bought them there's a pretty good chance that they were made to flower before they were ready, in which case the pups will often appear after the flower finished. Most broms will continue to grow and produce pups for a year or so after the flower has died back. Hope that helps. Cheers, Todd
I bought my bromeliad from walmart three days ago. I put it out in the sun for about 4-6hrs. Well, the leaves started getting crispy in certain sections. like they are getting fried. IDK what I'm doing wrong. Other than that it looks healthy.
your video was just what i was looking for my Tillandsia Cyanea grew a pup, but i didn't know how to take it apart from the mother plant. It was really attached to it's mother from where the roots are. I wish you did Tillandsia Cyanea, but these other bromelaids helped too!
What happens if you dont remove the pups from the mother plant? Will they still grow like normal?

I think i took it out wrong. At the bottom its white and theres know roots. please help
kodster69054 2 years ago
It's quite okay to harvest pups without roots. As long as it still has the hard base - that's where the new roots will grow from.
