That was the last time they tore down the goal posts at Ohio State! After they beat LSU in 88, they were able to bend them a little. And in 95 Notre Dame, 98 SCum, 2002 SCum, they were able to get on them, but tOSU sinks those puppies in like 100lbs of concrete. Now there is no way to tear them down. :(
I gotta tell it like it is here: the AstroTurf-era Ohio Stadium is the single ugliest-looking field in the history of college football (and no, I am not forgetting the Bronco Stadium blue turf). Ugly surface and a ridiculous midfield design.
As an Iowa fan the two things I remember about this game was how psyched up the Buckeyes were for this game, and Harmon getting stuffed on that 4th & 1 (I think by Chris Spielman).
The Hawkeyes finished the season getting spanked by UCLA in the Rose Bowl. Certainly a season of almosts and could have beens.
Thanks for posting this, one of my all time favorite games. I wish it would have included the clip of William White drilling Quinn Early on a long pass over the middle. Picking nits however---keep up the great work!!
I was at this game as well and remember it so vividly - the rain and the intensity of the crowd. Ourhonordefend - you are doing holy work with your posts!
I remember well being at this game with my dad. We were out of the rain on B deck, surrounded by Iowa fans. I still have the Sporting News cover that followed the game...
Part of that torn-down goal post was in the old Papa Joes for the longest time. What a great win. I forgot that Iowa was #1coming in and that performance cost Chuck Long the Heisman.
Omg...that field. Never agian

Was this the first night game at The Horseshoe?

@UsonianAC This wasn't a night game, just a 3:30 start under dark clouds. The first night game was the year before, against Pitt.

SPANGLER WAS THE 3RD best kicker in columbus at one time behind the guy at Westerville south I think it was and then Manny Matsakis at Capital LOL

I remember this game because right after it, my buddy was over here and nearly broke my coffee table because his school, Florida State, got beat!

The blocked punt has to be one of the coolest camera shots of a play I've ever seen

7:00 Nice personal foul by #2 (Is that Cris Carter?) Right in front of the ref too and no flag. That happened all day. They just let the teams play.

@scbuck1 I was at this game, too. Probably the most perfectly executed game I've ever seen Ohio State play. The crows was INSANE.

I was one of the fans that carried it across the Oval , down High Street and into Papa Joes.

@5OCCharlie I guess Long's performance in this game was a foreshadowing of his pro career!
