Gabe survived the first outbreak ("Extraction"), his mind was no longer "pure", because he was affected by the marker, just as was Lexine, so I think their baby is a kind of a mutant of new level, will look like human but with a possibility to control necromorphs like advanced hive-mind..

I think this is why this baby is so important to these "people in white".

@EArcherAlpha and friends. Actually I figure they happen around the same time. The outbreak starts in the mines with the opening cut scene. Around that time Issac has his encounters. It shows the panic above in the scenes where Gabe talks to his wife. So Gabe is the first to see the Necromorphs I'd say. Before Issac (this time around, factoring in Issac has already encountered them. However the fact that Gabe says "They're back" would suggest that he had already encountered them.

Gabe should have thought that action through. The grenade was timed, giving him time to run away and that white bald guy would be the only one to die. TWO, the maneframe Gabe was trying to hack. He was only going to take a certain wire off. When the grenade blew up, he was able to deactivate the doors by shooting the locks. Either way, he was able to open the doors the safe way. DAMN THESE HEROICS! >:(
