It came out of the middle of Courier's racquet. If it was off the frame, that would be a different story...I've been watching tennis all my life (as well as playing competitively) and I can tell you firsthand that the #1 player in the world would never accidentally miss-time a shot that much and hit the chair umpire.
Yes, I have that match on tape. Now, anyone can mishit a Sampras bomb, or accidently mistime it and angle it off, but In slow motion, if you know tennis, you can clearly see Courier opening up the face toward the umpire, that was NO mistake, lol!
What is funny is that Courier did a great acting job after, pretending it was an accident and even asking the umpire on the changeover if he was "alright". LOL. Incidently, he had just before this had a heated argument with the chair...

the "allmighty" ref is bound to be corrupt, biased, arrogant and ignorant.
so any sportsman with a heart for the game or the sports and a sense of fair play does not need someone to tell him what is right or wrong.

a sports person should know the rules and every honest person would have no problem to admit foul play or sth like that.

do you ever watch cycling for example?!
the riders know immediately who won, no matter how close the decision was.
only people who know that they are too weak need the fake power that being in a superior position brings with it (like refs, cheaters,..)
