  • Arguably one of Jerry's best songs, even though a cover song of Jim Croce who was a friend of Jerry's. Jerry honored the loss of his friend by doing a cover album of some of Jim's songs around 1980 which is a rare find on vinyl today. Both men were absolutely incredible musicians in their own right.

  • Jerry Reed did an entire album of Jim Croce songs. This one was written by two other people. It was the theme for two different movies. Both versions are really good.

  • man jerry does a great job on this song

  • Yes, pure class, beautiful. The fantastic Jerry Reed!!!!

  • Pure class.

  • You know something he NEVER taught anyone how to play guitar in his style of finger picking and still today people have tried to duplicate it but they are not able to.

  • i'm in my forties. it seemall the pop culture i grew up with are dying away. meloncholy, but's its life, i guess lol

  • @gotherealex I totally relate bro I am 45 and feel the exact same way....

  • @Doveman21 :)

  • Well, now you ask him yourself Jerry.......Im sure he was thrilled!

  • Jerry did a great job here covering Jim's song...

  • Great!

  • "if your listening Jim ,i'm doing the best i can"....

  • I really miss Jerry because he always gave me a laugh when I caught him on some TV show. Very funny guy with a great wit. Miss Ya Jerry. RIP.

  • He's got a great voice for this song- Great cover!! :-)

  • What a great song and what a great cover. It is a shame that he's gone.

  • Actually, that's Gimbel & Fox's "I Got a Name." :)

  • 11 dislikes????? how is this possible;you people obviously have no ear for music whatsoever! please clean the corn cob out of your ears!!!

  • @19211265 11 people dont understand that back then when an artist played another artist's song it was a tribute to them... now days when that happens its usually because they have no talent of there own.

  • WERE THE GOOD OLE BOYS.and don't ever forget the snow man

  • One of my earliest musical memories was my parents playing "Nashville Underground"- Jerry was one of the first guitar players that I admired, and a main influence on me becoming a musician. He always seemed to let his humor and wit come through in everything he played, and I think that's why I loved him so much. We'll not see his like again... RIP Jerry Reed Hubbard 1937-2008

  • They play it together now. RIP, Gentlemen.

  • I just adore his voice & Im so glad to see this video. thanks for posting it!!

  • I miss the 70s, Jerry on the Glen Campbell goodtime Hour. These are tunes you can not only hear,....you feel them. They bring you back to the time the song came out. I am so glad I was born when I was and songs like this have great mening. Thanks for posting! Love it!!!!

  • An amazing talent that is sorely missed.

  • Reed, I wish I had got to know you. Thanks for the music..

  • Impressive

  • My gosh, this is amazing. I also think Jim would be happy with this.

  • I like country and Jerry and Chet but I also like blues/rock .The blues picker/singer Gary Moore left this world 2-6-2011 With many hits but I like "Still got the blues"the most . It seems all my favorites are passing away. See you all soon.

  • thanks Jerry i hope you and Jim can play your songs together there.............

man i wish i was there to hear you fellas............

  • Jerry Reed was so underrated in his time! He did Jim's song proud & justice, Jim would have been proud! Two great musicians gone but never forgotten. Their music lives on to remind us of the talent of the good ole days! God Bless! RIP Jim & Jerry! :)

  • class

  • Thats a damn pretty song hoss.....Thank ya kindly!

  • I love this ! Thank you for sharing.

  • Just FYI from a Jim Croce fan like no other. Alyagotado, the name of the song is I got a NAME, not I Got a SONG. Oddly ironic that you got the name of the song wrong when the song is about having a name. Well a song's name is it's title. Hadn't thought about Jim and Jerry and John in heaven making music but (as yet another song says) if there's a rock and roll heaven you know they got a helluva band. My pic of heaven is my Dad, Jim Croce, and Benny Hill having a wild ole time.

  • Loved Jerry as a kid and still do! jacksfan08, nice story you shared about Jerry and Jim.

StevieB 1362, Also liked Harry Chapin and John Denver. I was just a kid when these guys were at the top of their game with the exception of Jim. I was born in January of 73, but have always loved his music.

  • @racingfan126 : 10 years older, but they all meant a great deal to me as well...6th grade camp in VA had us singing "Almost Heaven" (that would be in '76) and "Operator"......They were all consummate artists; just miss Jerry most of all I think as his skill with all guitars was almost unmatched. Like the Howell team - can't wait until I (hopefully) get to listen to all of them together creating the ultimate music in heaven.

  • This video just makes me tear up -- beautifully played, it brings back so many childhood memories. I miss Jerry Reed and Jim Croce.

  • Glad to get that info. I'm a big fan of Jerry and Jim. I always suspected that they must have crossed paths at some point in their lives. Now, thanks to you I know the story behind this mystery. Just as an added note, I won my 6th grade talent show when I sang Amos Moses. Still a highlight of my musical career, God bless you for the info...

  • @996joe AMOS MOSES! I'm lookin that one up right now.

  • Never knew Jerry could sing so beautifully. Bet they're selling out in duo-concerts in Heaven...along with Harry Chapin & John Denver. Love ya Jerry.

  • Curtis Mayfield said, after a stage accident left him paralysed, that his regret was that he'd never taught anyone the style he played guitar. I think this is true for so many great players like Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendricks, Even Les Paul himself, but nothing is so tragic as not having Jerry's style any more. You showed 'em what a band would sound like, Guitar Man!

  • Country Bing Crosby, minus the kid beating.............

  • I wouldn't say Jerry is better than Jim. With that said, Jery did an outstanding cover as most covers are not as good.

  • AWESOME!!! miss them both!!

  • I'm listening to Jerry Reed's version as I type this - Brilliant! Jim Croce would have been proud! Now they're both performing in Heaven. God bless them both!

    Jim Croce...1943-1973...R.I.P.

    Jerry Reed...1937-2008...R.I.P.

    You both are sorely missed.

  • it's a good thing people can't see me tearing up... i miss both jerry reed and jim croce...

  • I like it better than Croce's. what a pure voice jerry had... beautiful

  • id like to know too i love them both

  • I still wanna know. Was Jerry just a fan of Jim's from afar, or had the two of them crossed paths in the early 70's. I haven't been able thru my limited research to connect the two of them. I know that Jerry covered at least 2 of Jim's songs. Did they meet and develop a friendship at some point in time? Any body out there have any definitive answer to this query? I'm a big fan of both of them.

  • @996joe Joe, Jim Croce played Nashville in the early 70's. While in town, he went to Jerry's office, which was on 18th Avenue South (1107 to be exact), and knocked on the door. Jerry wasn't in, but they called him ad he came by and they had a short visit. Jim told Jerry that he was a huge fan. The visit was short, but he made quite an impression on Jerry. Jerry would play a Croce tune on most of his shows in the 80's. That is when I worked for Jerry.

  • Jerry Reed is a hell of an artist. I think he did Croce better. We're all movin' down the highway. Beautiful rendition.

  • I Love it!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Love it

  • awesome

  • 1 great song. 2 greats gone.

  • He did this song like it was his own.

  • jerry reed. wow what a guy. he really set it down in stone that he was a great performer with smokey and the bandit. rest in peace mr. reed and the one and only jim croce.

  • Wow! God I miss Jerry and Jim. Very nice cover, bet Jim woulda loved it. That is how it should be down . With RESPECT.

  • Just more proof of what a talent Jerry was both musician and singer, Nashville misses you,

  • This is how you cover a song.

  • Awesome! Jim and Jerry are probably playing together now!!! RIP

  • Far out, these buggers are cool!

  • Wow. The was extremely good.

  • what happened to the days of good music?

  • @singlewing44 You know, people older than you were saying the same thing about this music when it was new. They thought this was trash compared to the pop music of their day. I'm not trying to start a silly argument, just trying to point out what's true. No offense intended.

  • @dimpledick3inch Well this proves that about two half witted attempts at being clever is about all MiniMe has in him!

  • @dimpledick3inch Come on Mini ME you can do better than that. I mean in 3 and 1/2 hours even someone with your limited intelligence could come up with something better than that. I mean I have heard middle school kids do much better than that.

Whoever posted this video delete this moron and block his comments

  • Okay MiniMe where do I start. First: The insulting someones mama thing is so 1980s.

2: If my mom had met a morphodite like you I am sure she would have been so out of breath laughing she would have told me.

So if you want to insult someone find somebody else and do it in person because you would not want any of this. Trust me!

  • @dimpledick3inch

3 inches is probably pushing by about 2 and 15/16 inches.

Have a little respect retard the man is dead.

  • i guess we should feel lucky he lived an recorded as long as he did, when u think of people like hank williams, cgharlie christian, and so many others who were cut short.r.i.p. the greatest guitarist of all.

  • Jerry Reed was a multi-talented man both as a muscian and as an actor. I never thought he got the due respect due to him as on of the greatest entertainers of our time. Miss seeing him in Nashville where I live now. RIP Jerry.

  • A legend singing the song of another legend... thanks for upload this song! my very favorite song of Jim Croce... thanks!!

  • it seems like the 80s just had to add an incongruent element to even great music like this...that damn keyboard

  • beautiful and touching... Jerry was such a great singer. he should have been among legends like Elvis Cash and Nelson

he was just too shy to become a Megastar , you can tell by the way he let Chet and other guitarists do he stuff that he didnt make such a big deal out of his guitar playing and

you're a legend to me Jerry!

  • Arguably this version was better than Jim Croce's. Jerry did an entire album of Jim's songs, but this song "I got a name" was performed perfectly. Jerry did a fantastic interpretation of the song in only a style that Jerry Reed could do. This is a beautiful version of the song. Jim Croce and Jerry Reed were friends and this was Jerry's "Tribute" to Jim Croce.

  • I think you've got a point there. This is just as good, in a different way.

  • How could this be a better than original version....Bars have music you can read the words to...and pretend you're just as good as the original...which this is. Not to say Jerry did a bad job. Was actually very good. But I've always had a problem with people remaking already good hits.."exactly" the same as the original. Why bother? The original was great to begin with..and to do it the same..isn't a compliment. _What are your thoughts?

  • @shawflowers , actually I feel the opposite. I only like the remakes that pay respect deliberately to the orginal style.

  • chill bumps

  • not joking jerry is great to

  • YOU got a name!!JERRY!!

  • he was an under rated talent.

  • so true

  • You know, for all the stupid BS that shows up on youtube, it's stuff like this that makes my day. A huge joy to see Jerry Reed work. RIP Jim & Jerry!

One of the best guitar players the public has never heard of.

  • Does anyone know where I can get a better quality version of this? Or maybe even get this entire set?

  • Rip Jim and Jerry.

  • I got chills when he said "If you're listenin' Jim, I'm doin' the best I can." and through the whole song,I just wanted to cry.

  • "If you're listenin' Jim, I'm doin' the best I can." RIP to two great performers,

  • anyone know where I can find this as an mp3? thanks.

  • This is the absolute best cover of "I got a name" that anyone has EVER done! Jerry's voice sounds like it was made for this song. I like this version even better than Croce's. Jerry has the mellow voice that can really sing this. This was Jerry Reed's tribute to Jim Croce. Jim and Jerry Reed were friends. Good bless both of these fine singers and songwriters. R.I.P. Jim and Jerry.

  • this is proof that Atlanta can produce more than just "hip hop"........

  • Loved his singing, his humor, and guitar pickin.

  • I wonder did jerry and jim's paths cross at some point? This is actually a very good cover.

  • go get em' snowman

  • What's ironic is that though Jim Croce made a hit out of this song, it's the only hit song he didn't write himself.. Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox wrote it for the film "The Last American Hero" back in the early 70s..

  • @professor1966 . is that true? I always assumed he wrote all of his own stuff. To me this is Croce's signature song. Even still, he's perfectly suited for it.

  • Nicely done. Jerry Reed was a great performer.

  • I still can't believe Jerry Reed is gone. Totally unique guitar player, and a great talent. This is a reminder of how versatile he was.

  • L Dean...agree! Why is it so many talented people die so young..???

  • This is great - love it.

  • Jerry is a very talented singer. Love him

  • Does anyone have the entire show?

  • Wow...it's already been a year! Miss you Jerry Reed!!!

  • this is very good! i love both of them...

  • Jim Croce would have been proud of the way Jerry Reed performed this song. You gotta miss them.

  • @blueblazer68 Like the old song says, "If there's a Rock & Roll Heaven, Ya know they got a Hell of band". Jim and Jerry weren't rockers, I know, but you get the idea.

  • @blueblazer68 You know they are all up there making up one heck of a band. They are keeping jesus happy with their songs.... one can only hope.

  • @blueblazer68 Your spot on.

  • Jerry was a God Send and will be missed dearly

  • absifuckingloutly

  • alyagotado

Nice video post. Love both Jim and Jerry.

The name of the song is actually "I Got a Name".

  • i am about one of Jerry's biggest fans and wish i could've met him. i was about to get plane tickets to meet him but the day before i was able to, he died of emphezyma. man, he was amazing. Coors, Guitar, Basset hounds and rigs.............there's Jerry Reed R.I.P Jerry!

  • can't beat the snowman im a huge fan of jerry ever since i was little and im 17 now

  • Crappy picture, Crappy audio, but I love it. I loved both those guys. Please keep this one posted, what a treasure.

  • idk, the picture wasnt that bad, but as long as its jerry reed you dont focus on how bad the picture and audio is.

  • Jerry Reed was always one of my favorite entertainers. I think the world is a little less interesting with him gone from it, but I'm glad that there are videos like this to remember him by.

  • What a beautiful version of a classic song...we will always remeber you Jerry

  • jerry we will miss you

  • Such a nice tribute and well done I might add. I do hope Jerry and Jim are singing together upstairs.

  • Love both Jerry and Jim

  • when you finally go to that big ipod in the sky...just a couple more guys you hope are there with ya!

  • that was very nice! good cover

  • why doesn't jerry play the solo?

  • Jerry Reed, you are amazing!!

  • nailed it Jerry

  • Well spoken elletsco.

  • Actually it is "I got a name".

  • was drunk enough to not remember my last comment here... apparently made yesterday. today, i still stand by it. what great artists; reed and croce.

  • Well said!

  • croce made great music. reed was the kind of guy that would have been a great neighbor. hot dogs, beer, and playing some guitar. will miss them both.

  • Just enough Jerry and his flavor to be a cool cover. Definitely a song worthy of covering.

  • this is surprisingly well done... reed plays the clown lightwt so much, u forget the guy had legit talent.

  • a beautiful song

  • Seeing Jerry do this has given it a whole new meaning to me. Jim Croce and Jerry Reed are a couple of geniuses.

  • Jerry is just a bad motherfucker!

  • Hard to not like Jerry Reed

  • fantastic a great cover

  • R.I.P Snowman

You are still big in all our hearts

    Orange Hawk xxx

  • I have developed a fondness for Jerry. His talent goes beyond his humor. I miss him, too!

  • Jerry -

So many sweet memories of you on the radio when I was a teen. You gave me the hope that there was a way to be "different" and still ok. Thanks for that gift. Thanks for always being your true self. A lesson I keep having to remind myself of. And thanks for making me laugh. I'm sure you've got everyone rolling in the clouds now. Guess you're spinning some fine tunes with Jim, Chet, and the gang up there. Love from my heart to yours, Shashi

  • miss you Jerry

  • Snowman !!!!!!! YOU THE MAN !!!!!!

  • what state was he from cause his particular southern accent makes me wet.

  • Lousiana

  • I usually never like cover songs and have never said I liked a cover over the original... HOWEVER.... man, I really like Jerry's version, his deep, twangy voice is just so perfect for this song!

  • Great cover!

  • I mean the one with glasses and mustache?

  • I think his name is Danny DORK

  • Is the guitar player on the right Steve Earle?

  • Close but no...search utube for him ..."fearless heart" live to see what he looked like in 1987.

  • I see that Steve Earle didn't have a mustache in 1987. Thank you so much for clarifying it.

  • where the hell have i been? amazing voice!!

  • your a prick . nuff said

  • we all die

  • hope youre NEXT....

  • MAN!!! What a beautifull version of this song, jerry was such a great musician and excellent actor. Too bad he was such a heavy smoker, Thx for posting this rare video, I really enjoyed it.

  • Yeah but Jim Croce's version was better. I will give jerry props for doin a great job on it in memory of Jim.

  • This is great.

  • great song i liked jerry alot

  • Wonderful, Jerry! I miss you and Jim! Two great musicians lost too soon!

  • jerry and jim, god I miss you both

  • damn it jerry, i still miss you. (especially after watching a smokey and the bandit 30 yr comparitive video.) you are still awesome.

  • Jerry, you did well...Damn, you left too soon, just like Jim. I can imagine you both up there "pickin' 'n grinnin..."

"Like the fool I am and I'll always will be..."

  • I got goosebumps. very Nicely done. RIP JERRY and JIM.
