Arguably one of Jerry's best songs, even though a cover song of Jim Croce who was a friend of Jerry's. Jerry honored the loss of his friend by doing a cover album of some of Jim's songs around 1980 which is a rare find on vinyl today. Both men were absolutely incredible musicians in their own right.
Jerry Reed did an entire album of Jim Croce songs. This one was written by two other people. It was the theme for two different movies. Both versions are really good.
You know something he NEVER taught anyone how to play guitar in his style of finger picking and still today people have tried to duplicate it but they are not able to.
@19211265 11 people dont understand that back then when an artist played another artist's song it was a tribute to them... now days when that happens its usually because they have no talent of there own.
One of my earliest musical memories was my parents playing "Nashville Underground"- Jerry was one of the first guitar players that I admired, and a main influence on me becoming a musician. He always seemed to let his humor and wit come through in everything he played, and I think that's why I loved him so much. We'll not see his like again... RIP Jerry Reed Hubbard 1937-2008
I miss the 70s, Jerry on the Glen Campbell goodtime Hour. These are tunes you can not only hear,....you feel them. They bring you back to the time the song came out. I am so glad I was born when I was and songs like this have great mening. Thanks for posting! Love it!!!!
I like country and Jerry and Chet but I also like blues/rock .The blues picker/singer Gary Moore left this world 2-6-2011 With many hits but I like "Still got the blues"the most . It seems all my favorites are passing away. See you all soon.
Jerry Reed was so underrated in his time! He did Jim's song proud & justice, Jim would have been proud! Two great musicians gone but never forgotten. Their music lives on to remind us of the talent of the good ole days! God Bless! RIP Jim & Jerry! :)
Just FYI from a Jim Croce fan like no other. Alyagotado, the name of the song is I got a NAME, not I Got a SONG. Oddly ironic that you got the name of the song wrong when the song is about having a name. Well a song's name is it's title. Hadn't thought about Jim and Jerry and John in heaven making music but (as yet another song says) if there's a rock and roll heaven you know they got a helluva band. My pic of heaven is my Dad, Jim Croce, and Benny Hill having a wild ole time.
Loved Jerry as a kid and still do! jacksfan08, nice story you shared about Jerry and Jim.
StevieB 1362, Also liked Harry Chapin and John Denver. I was just a kid when these guys were at the top of their game with the exception of Jim. I was born in January of 73, but have always loved his music.
@racingfan126 : 10 years older, but they all meant a great deal to me as well...6th grade camp in VA had us singing "Almost Heaven" (that would be in '76) and "Operator"......They were all consummate artists; just miss Jerry most of all I think as his skill with all guitars was almost unmatched. Like the Howell team - can't wait until I (hopefully) get to listen to all of them together creating the ultimate music in heaven.
Glad to get that info. I'm a big fan of Jerry and Jim. I always suspected that they must have crossed paths at some point in their lives. Now, thanks to you I know the story behind this mystery. Just as an added note, I won my 6th grade talent show when I sang Amos Moses. Still a highlight of my musical career, God bless you for the info...
Curtis Mayfield said, after a stage accident left him paralysed, that his regret was that he'd never taught anyone the style he played guitar. I think this is true for so many great players like Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendricks, Even Les Paul himself, but nothing is so tragic as not having Jerry's style any more. You showed 'em what a band would sound like, Guitar Man!
I'm listening to Jerry Reed's version as I type this - Brilliant! Jim Croce would have been proud! Now they're both performing in Heaven. God bless them both!
I still wanna know. Was Jerry just a fan of Jim's from afar, or had the two of them crossed paths in the early 70's. I haven't been able thru my limited research to connect the two of them. I know that Jerry covered at least 2 of Jim's songs. Did they meet and develop a friendship at some point in time? Any body out there have any definitive answer to this query? @996joe Joe, Jim Croce played Nashville in the early 70's. While in town, he went to Jerry's office, which was on 18th Avenue South (1107 to be exact), and knocked on the door. Jerry wasn't in, but they called him ad he came by and they had a short visit. Jim told Jerry that he was a huge fan. The visit was short, but he made quite an impression on Jerry. Jerry would play a Croce tune on most of his shows in the 80's. That is when I worked for Jerry.

This is the absolute best cover of "I got a name" that anyone has EVER done! Jerry's voice sounds like it was made for this song. I like this version even better than Croce's. @blueblazer68 Like the old song says, "If there's a Rock & Roll Heaven, Ya know they got a Hell of band". Jim and Jerry weren't rockers, I know, but you get the idea.
i am about one of Jerry's biggest fans and wish i could've met him. i was about to get plane tickets to meet him but the day before i was able to, he died of emphezyma. man, he was amazing. Coors, Guitar, Basset hounds and rigs.............there's Jerry Reed R.I.P Jerry!
Jerry Reed was always one of my favorite entertainers. I think the world is a little less interesting with him gone from it, but I'm glad that there are videos like this to remember him by.
So many sweet memories of you on the radio when I was a teen. You gave me the hope that there was a way to be "different" and still ok. Thanks for that gift. Thanks for always being your true self. A lesson I keep having to remind myself of. And thanks for making me laugh. I'm sure you've got everyone rolling in the clouds now. Guess you're spinning some fine tunes with Jim, Chet, and the gang up there. Love from my heart to yours, Shashi
I usually never like cover songs and have never said I liked a cover over the original... HOWEVER.... man, I really like Jerry's version, his deep, twangy voice is just so perfect for this song!
MAN!!! What a beautifull version of this song, jerry was such a great musician and excellent actor. Too bad he was such a heavy smoker, Thx for posting this rare video, I really enjoyed it.

@blueblazer68 Like the old song says, "If there's a Rock & Roll Heaven, Ya know they got a Hell of band". Jim and Jerry weren't rockers, I know, but you get the idea.
Gunstar1701 1 year ago 2
@blueblazer68 You know they are all up there making up one heck of a band. They are keeping jesus happy with their songs.... one can only hope.

Crappy picture, Crappy audio, but I love it. I loved both those guys. Please keep this one posted, what a treasure.
Copperheadroad1 2 years ago
idk, the picture wasnt that bad, but as long as its jerry reed you dont focus on how bad the picture and audio is.

Jerry Reed was always one of my favorite entertainers. I think the world is a little less interesting with him gone from it, but I'm glad that there are videos like this to remember him by.

croce made great music. reed was the kind of guy that would have been a great neighbor. hot dogs, beer, and playing some guitar. will miss them both.
elletsco 2 years ago 5
Just enough Jerry and his flavor to be a cool cover. Definitely a song worthy of covering.
Alan62651 2 years ago 5
this is surprisingly well done... reed plays the clown lightwt so much, u forget the guy had legit talent.

Is the guitar player on the right Steve Earle?
bluebird925 2 years ago
Close but no...search utube for him ..."fearless heart" live to see what he looked like in 1987.
aprilwino 2 years ago
I see that Steve Earle didn't have a mustache in 1987. Thank you so much for clarifying it.
