  • try that in the NES Top Gun game...

  • Lots of neat tricks, but I think I liked the rate of climb the best...

  • DAMN! That dude is one hell of a stick in that Bou !!

  • This is a great & well-handled example of how to fly a Caribou to a touchdown with the nosewheel first! This is purely an airshow procedure, & certainly not recommended as a standard landing technique. See why a pilot should not land nosewheel first. Watch this video of a landing accident, which is a type which has been rarely filmed. It's titled "Landing Accident-Rarely Seen Bouncing or Porpoising" (youtu.be/x5ZzktAFJK4)

  • nice flying!! :) this pilot seems to absolutely know his plane !! :)

and the final landing was absolutely perfect!! (although it looks a bit too fast at first, the pilot finds exactly the right timing for flare, avoiding a too rough landing or balooning)

  • Caribous would be GREAT if they had 14 JATO packs strapped to them at all times - so they could be deployed at randomly- when the pilot least expects it.

To this end I'd hope that some committed souls get one to crack the sound barrier - something to tell the kids eh??.... Giddyup!

  • Cape May County Airport New Jersey has about 18 Caribou slowly rotting away for years. Wish someone would invest and get these flying again.

  • Now there is why I love Canadian Built Aircraft, Built to last and can land pretty much anywhere. :)

  • Wow. That guy knows his shit.

  • Personally i like the king air better but could it do that? me thinks not!

  • poor old lady

  • 0:50 stoppie!

  • Excellent airplane with an excellent pilot!!

  • The Caribou is like the DC3...100s of aircraft manufacturers will try to build something to replace them and none will do it successfully.

Nobody has produced anything that will do what the DC3 did with the same levels of reliability and economy.

The same will probably hold true for the Caribou.

  • This pilot knows his shit!

  • Wow! Very cool airplane

  • Caribou or not, he is one hell of a pilot.

  • its the last plane from canada in the raaf from now on only american.

  • COOL the nose gear landing

  • Too bad the pilot is only as good as Vne :)

  • OMG OMG OMG! i can't even crash like that in a sim

  • I've got a real soft spot for the 'Boo and F-111. Shame they are now more.

  • aside from the amazing pilot i like the music of this one.

  • Wow!

  • is he drung?

  • @thomasinothekiller - No. But I think YOU might be !! What's "drung" anyway ?

  • The pilot massive balls caused Forward C/G moment. Allowing him to put just the nose gear on the ground.

  • @jjsandersheli No, you tit!! it's the flaps!!

  • @32780tit it was a joke...

  • The nose gear only on the runway was just freaky cool. I didn't know that a plane that size could be that nimble. The pilot has major skill and balls of concrete.

  • WOOOOO!A,As!

  • he just did a stoppie

  • WOW!!!1

  • RAAF Pilots man can they fly... Aussie Aussie Aussie

  • @bobkats OI, OI, OI,,

  • superb skill

  • I love that bird. Pilot is very skilled and i hope that one or the other of the caribus will be displayed in future.

  • A flyer worth his salt.

  • Chuck Norris of-A-pilot.

  • EXCELENTE PILOTO

  • Remember folks,,, if it aint leaking oil,,, it aint got oil - From a buddy of mine who used to maintain the RAAF's Bou's and Pigs...

  • That is one ugly plane

  • Epic Nollie

  • Man, that is one ugly ass plane but the guy flying it is like fucking Baloo from talespin. I never thought it was possible to french the tarmac but thats what i get for thinking (literally: I got this video for thinking that).Still, awesome pilot.

  • Damn! He kissed the runway!! Is a genius!

  • this guy is an ace!!

  • !!!!!!!!!

  • Hey, I jumped out of one of those! they're gigantic and super fun to jump out of!!

  • A CARIBEAN FLYING BANANA

  • A aircraft wheelie...fantastic. Do not try this at home !!!!

  • That nose gear trick is neat, but suicidal.

  • Bob Hoover had a plane like this right?

  • @Dominoes282 He had a Commander. Similar but different.

  • I opened this vid from my recommended vids expecting to see a caribou flying a plane. I am disappointed.

  • @Glywysing942 caribou is the nick name of the plane

  • @ShadeShadow001 - No, Caribou is the official name of the deHavilland Canada DHC-4.

  • skill..

  • Bravado is hard work

  • This is very normal for the Caribou

  • Special ops, anyone?

  • how is that nose wheelie even possiable? it goes against every thing i know about flying. the plane should have flown into the ground.

  • @drod103164 These type of aircraft, if over speed actually produce lift at the back of the aircraft still creating lift

  • @drod103164 Flaps create the positive lift while all its waiting for is enough AOA to get a positive rate. As you can see he pitched up just a tad creating a ballooning effect, it happens in just about any plane. High speed stunts with flaps can be dangerous sometimes though.

  • HOLY SHIT! I never had any IDEA that the Caribou was so agile! Like a friggin' tiny little stunt plane, but a useful and practical transport as well. And that nose-wheel maneuver...I can't believe that's even possible! LOL, I LIKED the DHC-4 before, but I think that now I LOVE it!

  • You can tell the difference between a very practiced and skilled pilot here and overconfident idiot. Most skillled pilots are older and know their own limitations and the aircraft limitations.

  • Trust an Aussie... :)

  • They are amazing aircraft! Land & take off just about any surface. Great clip!

  • Bloody Showoff lol!

  • I want one.

  • skillage in the village

  • Front wheel Manual, YEA! :D

  • Nice display!

  • This is from the Australian Bicentennial Air Show.

  • sooooo maneuverable!!

  • Coollllll. great pilot.

  • @Dirtylikechristina Not for in Vietnam, maybe against a modern day surface to air missile.

  • Great Plane!! i take it that this is the original verison of the DHC-5 Buffalo? they look the same to me

  • is this the plane they used kittens as test pilots?

  • Crazy,Crazy,Crazy!!! SZALONY PILOT ;]

  • How did korean air get like that ?

And the dhl and jal mid air near miss ! thats a traversity.... is that real ? a real bump even ?

  • The Royal Australian Air Force has a great tradition of producing outstanding pilots. Add this to an outstanding aircraft and this is the result. The RAAF has just retired the Caribou, yet no true replacement has been found.

  • @matube73 Not just the RAAF, but the RAF, and RCAF as well.

  • Nose Down Attitude

  • A good pilot that knows how to fly a great plane! A shame to see them go from the ADF!

  • 0:40 nose manual ;) skillz..

  • DeHavilland Canada rules!

  • Deathwish...hehe!! An insane pilot i must say...

  • Everyone expects a small aerobatic plane to pull some of these maneuvers, it makes it an even bigger treat to pull it in a Caribou.

  • Swedish skills!

  • anyone know who this guy is? I'd like to have him at our airshow

  • Incredible skill

  • 1:40 - 1:50 = O.O

  • I got to jump out of one of these a year or so ago when Skydive City in Zephyrhills, FL borrowed one. Very nice plane to jump out of.

  • ahahahaha awesome pilot i bet he was like check this out and does a wheely, and at the end is all like fuck this imool fuck uway bitch and lands right beside it. :D

  • i used to fly in these in aussie army in 70s/80s ,,[not as pilot]

  • Awesome plane and pilot!

  • woooooooooooooooow!!

  • He's not crazy, he's just showing you how good it is

  • fake

  • theres around a dozen of these sitting at at cape may airport in new jersey.

  • ain't she something? try THAT with a Globemaster...

  • that was tight

  • WOW I GOT TO GET THAT PLANE ON FSX AND ATTEMPT THAT MANEUVER!!!!

  • He's on crack. Lol.

  • fake. that is il2 sturmovik

  • Terrific pilot and amazing plane

  • when i flew in this type of plane we didnt do this, id puke, this plane has a tendency to make its passengers airsick

  • superb great skills

  • Delete "crazy" - fill in "excellent" ... !!

  • I don't think he's crazy! He knows what he's doing and he's highly skilled too! Wish I was there!

  • Nice video! Super professional pilots and very good plane!!!

  • The TV show Survivor used a Caribou in one of it's opening sequences. They had Kangaroo's jumping around the airstrip as they landed. It was pretty cool. Found the clip called "Survivor The Australian Outback Episode 1 Part 1" on youtube.com/watch?v=YD6iBC7JUoE

  • Get a good headwind and they can actually fly backwards! Try pulling that off in another aircraft without hitting the ground.

Caribou is pure perfection. It does what it does, brilliantly.

  • master

  • Thats a lot of rudder for an ac that size! And how about those flaps - looks like about 60 degrees? And only a few body lengths roll out - awesome! Apparently they were banned from the civil register because the STOL performance was so good that they were easy to stall if you weren' t right on the ball. Thats Oz anyway.

  • If Stupid Youtube still had the Star-Rating system, I would give this 5!

  • Can honestly say I have never seen the -4 do that before.

  • Look like bricked but great move, great plane, great air dynamic.

  • Super pilot indeed. Wow.

  • I want this plane!

  • they aren't called chunder buses for no reason ;-)

  • Thats some excellen flying of an excellent airplane! Good old De Havilland Canada! @coderoid: he gunned the engines at the end to take advantage of reverse thrust. The Caribou has variable pitch props, which enabled reverse thrust for situations where extra stopping power was required, or when using brakes wasnt an option, ie: when using pontoons or skis, as the caribou could do.

  • are these planes Canadian made? the name sounds familiar

  • @wallyworlder DHC4, yes they were made in Canada. I believe they are one of the aircraft that Viking Air has gained the rights to remake...

  • @phatkix Yeah I heard that too - but they are looking at doing a modernized version of the Buffalo (turboprop) version I think. I know we (Oz) have not been able to replace them with something with similar or better performance - The closest is more Chinooks I read. I actually wrote to Viking telling em to bid!

  • Stops on an threepenny bit....and to think they are retiring these terrific work horses.....crazy....who's in charge,,;;;, I want to speak to them;; .....

  • i was a former pilot in the south vietnamese army i flew men and local passengers around and sprayed chemicals in north vietnam in c-130ss. i would do anything just to get one more flight on those caribous.

  • Got the chance to have a flight on one of the RAAF Caribou's last year with the inaugeration of my 111 AAFC SQN, they didn't do anything as awesome as that but they did pull some 3G turns at 70 degrees and swung that rudder a bit, it's a shame that they have to go, they're truly an amazing aircraft.

  • Super pilot :) super skill

  • What flight incredible, great skill.

  • very exciting! even more exciting from the flight deck!

  • Just AMAZING! =)

  • Great aeroplane, great pilot. 5 stars!!!

  • this is super..:D This pilot ain't crazy.. hes a great pilot to do those stunts..=)

  • love the nose wheel touchdown

  • Go the RAAF!

  • how the fuk do you do an endo in an aeroplane?? seems to be illogical

  • @cjellwood

its not an endo - this would be a 'manual' :)

  • drop the flaps to increase lift, then gun the engines to increase speed.. i think heheh..

  • This is why the Caribou, like all De Havilland Canada creations, is legendary: it was built for this, with the early Canadian airports being so austere and unimproved. This plane shines in short fields and heavy loads. DHC, FTW!

  • This is from RAAF Richmond airbase and the pilot is proably Phil Astley of 38 squadron, he was the first one to do such manouvers in a Caribou.

  • to syeager9....you could perform this manouver in a cessna172 although the prop & the runway might protest a tad..you see the lift vector is still acting through the centre or thereabouts of the wing but rather than being straight up ,the vector is tilted forward due to the lift authority presented by the horizontal stabilizer but instead of the aerodynamic force being on the bottom of the stabilizer,it's on the top..I know this because i'm a pilot & I gather you are too

  • On 172 or 152 it somewhat similar when you practice short or soft field take offs. With flaps extended, it looks like you have the negative pitch, but still have a lot of lift. So you have to push the nose down to maintain speed. This is rather unnatural first couple of times.

  • really cool))

  • nice video!! very good

  • Love this plane.

  • What I find interesting is the nose wheel stunt. It looks like the wing has the negative angle of attack, so it should push it down. However the plane is still flying. Perhaps because of the enormous flaps and the high engine power. I think I have to check my aerodynamics book once again.

  • Yes, you should. all though you already answered it..

  • and your a tosser arent u

  • what a bk

  • Not a crazy pilot. Simply a great plane! 5 stars!

  • ... and a great pilot ;)

  • Great or not, pilot wouldn't able to make things like that, unless the airplane is capable to do such maneuvers. And sure, pilot is great because he knows exactly what airplane can do. You know, you can do a lot of funny stuff in Cessna 172 also. However it's not that they teach you. And usual pilot will never attempt anything as crazy as what we see here. Dragging the nose wheel is really dangerous. And I can't think of any other plane that can do it.

  • @syeager9 well the plane doesn't fly itself or pushes its own envelope. It's the pilot who does all that, so great pilot.

  • @syeager9 Amen Brother!!

  • @syeager9 any pilot that has the balls to run it like that is ok in my book.

  • the pilot's not playing with a full deck, is he??

  • Why would you say that. Airplanes can do so much more than just drive from point A to point B. They fly!! in a 3 dimensional world. Most pilots no nothing about what their aircraft are truly capable of. I wouldn't even call them pilots. There just drivers

  • Oh, most bush pilots have stretched their legs in an aircraft they're comfortable in. Usually in single-engine piston, non-IFR workhorses caught in CB near last light!

  • AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!

  • awesome video! crazy pilot

  • Why is he a "crazy pilot" ? You'll find this demonstration was well planned and rehersed. Has nothing to do with being "crazy" ! Gee, non-aviation 'arm chair' experts annoy the hell out of me !!

  • relax man. i didn't mean mentally crazy i meant crazy/awsome. i know this was planned an rehersed and i just said his flying was awsome(crazy). and i know a thing or 2 about aviation btw
