Hi, great video but might I suggest putting dead grass or pine needles or cedar branches under the bark and on the ground inside your shelter for more protection from the cold. Also might try a smaller opening or maybe a leafy branch for a door.
I too was shocked to see you walk under the knife. I also think it is easier to step on long branches to break them using your weight instead of wedging them between trees and trying to break them while prying.
@broadwayFan28 'I also think it is easier to step on long branches to break them using your weight' - only if you weigh a lot of extra pounds. swibo did it right. Go back to your couch, potatohead.
@goldenscales Safety is a top priority in survival situation. Any time you have a choice, pick the safest route. Not much chance you can get hurt stepping on a limb especially with good boots but there are several possible ways to get hurt using that wedge method.
Awesome man :o) great to see a bit on fireweed. This is a very versatile plant with many medicinal uses. It was also used as cordage and many other things! WARNING: It can be a laxative for some...so start with small amounts...hehe :o)
Hey I like your videos I'm just concerned about the water you drank At 6:52 you drank water right out of the river, is that safe? I see most people will boil the water before drinking it or at least treat it with some type of chlorinating tablets.
@nj4x4fever2 Personally I'm not afraid of drinking water from fast flowing, clean looking mountain rivers but I've grown up doing that. I evaluate every water source and decide how safe it is based on the facts that I have. If in doubt I'll purify it somehow. But that's just me, I don't recommend that. BTW, I'm glad that you like the vids, thanks!
@nj4x4fever2 It's kinda like the water in Mexico. Anyone who was drinking it since a young age will be fine, but tourists will get heavy stomache problems from bacteria. As long as you're doing it from a young age, fast-flowing streams are probably gona be fine.
Dandelion! I love those. Well, those and cat's ear. I take the flowers and make fritters out of em. I hear the roots can be roasted and ground as a coffee extender.
Great use of materials nearby, and awesome idea about bark as an insulator against the penetrating cold of the ground. Nice video; would love to see another series in the winter!
Very good. You'd just finished the shelter and I was thinking,"he'll find the ground cold" and then you showed us the big piece of bark. I'm guessing it was cold anyway, but I'll have to wait and see!
Great job on the shelter ! You used what was available to meet your needs. One doesnt really need an ax if one uses ones brain ! People need to use thier brains and bodys more and get away from so much gear. I never had any luck with fireweed as a cordage. Do you dry it before rolling it ? The small rootlets are also edible and have the most starch.
nifty little shelter

What was the point of calling me a "potatohead"?

@goldenscales Kiwi humor. Not meant in a sarcastic way.

I'm surprised you went under your knife like that at 1:48, it seems needlessly dangerous. Awesome vids though!

@boomer00000 its not a machete. a machete is a lot longer than that! it is just a big survival knife

@swibo6 The higher up the mountain, the safer it is to drink. Also as you said the waters speed is a factor :)

Holy crap!....LOL
Im watching this and using headphones.
At 1:17 a mozzie flies close to the camera and thru my head phones
it sounded so realistic that I actually reacted to it
by pulling my head back and looking up befor realising that it was
on the video...lol
That shelter is great mate. Excellent use of the fallen trees.
The new growth of the Fir tree that you are eating should have alot of Vitamin C in them. Better than nothing I guess.
