Next one even in the continental United States is August 21, 2017. The best place to see it will be the middle of Wyoming. So head to Yellowstone summer of 2017.
I agree that the best place is Wyoming, but the place where totality is the longest is going to be near Hopkinsville, KY. But no one should go because I want the place to myself.
At 2:25 pm august 21, 2017 for a long-ish solar eclipse. The next is at may 20, 2012 for a SHORT Partial eclipse. But for the TOTAL solar eclipse go to, Lincoln, or Nashville on the 20th, rent a room prior of course. To see the eclipse on august 21, 2017 at 2:25 pm.
Wow...ladies screaming like it's a sports event, good way to ruin possibly one of the most beautiful things a human being can ever see in their lifetime.
Yes there is beeping. It is WWV US government shortwave standard time-signals from Colorado. I recorded the time over the video to verify the start and length of totality against the predictions. The radio was hanging from one of the cameras so you don't always hear it. Three cameras that's why you hear the same yelling three times in a row, I showed the view over from each one.
@drdale1 In my Astronomy class, we were told that Michigan, and many other states around it, will never get see a solar eclipse in many years. We were shown a chart of 14 total and 13 annular eclipses between 2001-2020. But as I looked back at the chart, there may be an annular eclipse in Illinois. Thanks.
@BonaFideBoxing I don't know what chart you are looking at but there are two total solar eclipses through southern Illinois in the next few years, 2017 and 2024. No Annulars see the "official" site
I was there in 1991 and the total eclipse was AWESOME....all the city street lights came on....it looked like sunset all the way around.....I have a vid of it...i'll have to find it and post it.
4:20 This is the coolest part right here. Who cares what the eclipse looks like - they all look the same. A black moon surrounded by the sun's corona. The big deal is when it happens that it taps into our primal fears like the end of the world. Nothing could compare I don't think...except for maybe the actual end of the world. :)
I would be cheering too LoL :-) Thats preety amazing how the sky gets dark and the sky changes so fast. Its like night time and then day it a matter of moments. This was the longest eclipse of the century :-)
The description says that this eclipse in 1991 lasted so long, over 7 minutes, that there will not be one that lasts longer until 2132. There are eclipses almost every year. The one this year is around 4 minutes long
I'm all booked and ready to go to the Cook Islands in July 2010 to see the solar eclipse. It will be my first solar eclipse, can't wait, it will be so exciting!!
Very nice video. I enjoyed seeing darkness set in, the 360 sunset and the nice diamond ring effect. I would have liked to see the corona appear a few seconds after totality. I've never witnessed it in real life, but in every eclipse video, this is the most exciting part : watching the last bit of the sun disappear, a few seconds of nothingness, and then the corona appears out of nowhere. Magical.
@drdale1 heh, well, if you consider this soon, there will be a total solar eclipse in 2024(but probably we'll be dead by then) in Mexico, totality will be in Torreon, Coahuila and will last about 4 minutes and a half
I saw this eclipse on the Big Island when I was 4 years old. We had a perfect vantage point onto a small hill by the ocean. You could see the shadow of the moon come across the ocean as a massive shadow. It was so amazing I remember people were tearing up when in went into totality.
I just happen to be lucky because it went right over where I live. I'm going to chase one in the future so I can see it again. I was 4 but I remember it perfectly.
From anything I ever experienced in my whole life, a total solar eclipse was the MOST fascinating experience! Believe me, you have to see one, once in your life. Then you'll understand me ... And don't go for a partial one ; only a total eclipse.
Amazing Orion constellation could be seen since it is not visible in July nite skies. Orion is one of my favorites. I played hooky that day to see the partial from AZ UA planetarium.
Seriously? You don't think one of the rarest sights in the universe is exciting? Please, share with us something you find more worthy of our attention.
Very cool, I enjoyed this a lot, particularly because I have a strong connection to this eclipse, which I witnessed from a different location. 5*, good work!
I remember this, i was in grade school, but we had to use a box thing we made to see it, I was asked if i could see it, i said yes but i had no idea what i was looking at
The comment about it looking like a sunset everywhere is very common at total eclipses because you are standing inside a big "dot", the umbra, and the horizon all the way around 360 degrees is reddish like at sunset because that is where the edge of the umbra is, maybe 50 miles away. It looks like a sunset in every direction which is amazing.
It is because the video shows the start of the eclipse as seen from 3 different cameras nearby and each camera captured the same background noise which gets played 3 times.
Yeah, really, the spiritual nature of the event makes me want to listen to the silence, and hear whatever is speaking to me. And oddly enough, this very same eclipse which I witnessed from Georgia resulted in a song being channeled to me from beyond. If you'd care to hear it, let me know!! It''s not a party or a concert, it's a profound gift from Mother Nature! Some folks will get all hoo-ha-happy for any reason.
It is very hard to explain to someone who has not seen a total eclipse. The last few seconds before totality are something very difficult to visualize. Such a dramatic change in your entire world from day to nght in seconds is a shock even when you know it is going to happen. Some people like to experience it in silence away from others and "hear" the change in their environment ( and there are many sound changes that occur) but I like the crowd and the building anticipation.
also, the start of totality is shown in the video 3 times from 3 different cameras so you hear the same set of cheers and screams 3 times in a row. It does sound a bit much when played over and over but I wanted to include the 3 different views.
@drdale1 I agree with you. It is one of the wonderful things that make me feel unique in the Universe. And it is one of the best things a human being should experience. I feet like crying when I remember. Even when you live it you can't believe it.
Yes, during the opening title and you can hear it in the background during the eclipse. I always take a radio. It was even easy to pick up in the Australian outback at the eclipse of 2001, a long way from the transmitter.
wow, does this ever bring back memories! I was in Tuxpan standing in the middle of a farmer's field with cows and horses all around us. Quite possibly the most spectacular, sublime, and breathtaking events I will ever experience in my life. Thank you for posting this!
I was there too, staying at the Melia. I was 21 and drove down from socal with my friends. It was the greatest natural thing I have ever witnessed. Very erie, dogs barking, temperature droping, it was AWESOME!!!
to anyone who has personally witnessed a total eclipse, does it get dark enough to see stars if you are in the path of totality? if so, what is roughly the faintest magnitude you can see?
You can see the brightest stars and planets, maybe mag -1 to 0. In the video you can see us pointing out Venus even before totality. It also depends on the particular eclipse, sky conditions and your eyes don't have time to adjust in 2 or 4 minutes especially if you have been looking at the Sun right before totality. With any aid like binos you could see much fainter stars but no one is going to look for stars when they can be watching the amazing eclipse.

Awesome video! I saw that eclipse north of Cabo, but unlike you saw it coming in and out of clouds caused by the cooler temperature of the eclipse. Since then I've seen 3 more, 2 of which were in completely clear skies. For anyone who has never seen a total eclipse but likes to see an interesting and spectacular natural occurence, I highly recommend seeing one. The next one is August 1, 2008 in Russia and China.
