Hi everyone! I have reviewed my technique and have recently started a blog in Gypsy Jazz Guitar! Stop by and leave your requests of subjects you would like to see adressed! All the best, JR
@guitarvidtechinques I think you would find Michael Horowitz's Gypsy Picking book helpful and necessary to get the authentic Django sound. Stick with it for a few months until you've trained your right hand.
So that's going to mess me up with my electric jazz playing? The Gypsy style is very percussive. Perhaps I can work out the best of both worlds. Thanks for the video. I'll check out Michael H. book.
Picking technique is VERY important for this style of playing. It's imperative that you use downstrokes when changing strings (going up or down). Strict up/down picking totally changes the vibe. Thanks for the melody lesson, though.
I recommend Michael Horowitz's "Gypsy Picking" book. It took me several weeks to adjust, but now I can't imagine playing any other way. Joe Pass also used this downstroke approach. As you probably know, the Gypsy style uses lots of sweep picking, especially on arpeggios, so that's another reason to learn this picking style. One piece of advice: try to work out licks/patterns that use two notes per string. This allows you to keep a strict up/down pattern, and you can play faster more easily..
eh eh, that book is what i have been using. Has done wonders, almost nailed it. CLose to posting this video with the new picking at the same speed. You do have to practice several hours per day, though, as you probably know...
Thanks for the lesson.Very nice one.

naith1984 2 years ago
Nothing is wrong with it. Some people just like to nag about alternating picking when gypsy,s nomally don,t do this.
It,s all details if you ask me. Nothing more.

Nice! But the picking is not the way the traditional Manouche and Gitan guys would do...

Agreed, I have been changing my technique after posting this video to adapt to gypsy downstroke (rest) picking technique. Hope to post it soon
