  • Karen Carpenter and Whitney Houston - that's a pairing I would kill to hear. Two of the greatest voices of all time. Hopefully they're making beautiful music together in heaven now.

  • miss karen~

  • KAREN THANK S FOR THE MUSIC YOU LEFT US

  • :-(((((( alone......never love again.... "

  • such a lovely singer, such a shame.

  • i can so relate to this song!!!!!!!!! what a great song and what a great singer she was!!!!

  • This song is great, lyrics is representing my life, and karen's voice touches the bottom of my heart.. for many years..

  • Forever alone.

  • The most wonderful voice I have heard in my life.

  • What a wonderful voice!

  • @ondynne yes goodbye to love is so sad and so heartfelt and sang from the heart as though she knew personally those emotions

  • great voice she had thank god we have these recordings to remember Karen's superb skill!

  • I think I read domewhere on my CD set that Karen and Richard weren't very crazy about this song. But Richard said he wanted this released as a single because it showcased Karen's vocals so well. I have to agree. Karen sounds great in this song and it's not a bad tune.

  • There are many tribute singers, ect on here and they are mostly pretty good, but, and BELIEVE THIS, there was only ONE (1) Karen Carpenter. She NAILED every note that she recorded and also the emotions of the songs. If it was sad, she was sad, if happy, she was happy and so on. Thats not just singing, that's great acting too. Some of the songs were too musically "built up," but her voice was enough. We so miss you Karen and I personally feel so sad at how your life ended and your painful last days.

  • Beautifrul song, great song by one of the best singers. Side note, in that TV movie they made in the 80's ???, don't you think Karen Allen would have made the perfect Karen Carpenter?

  • @ondynne Absolutely! I've always wondered why Hollywood never made that connection. Go figure.

  • the saddest song in history.

  • @jaytotheell I don't know, I've always loved this song but "Goodbye to Love" is sad too. 'no one ever cared if I should live or die...'

  • You are so beautifull and your voice is a gift from heaven. In my heart you will live forever.

  • Please GOD bring back this angel if only for a day. The world misses the most beautiful voice I've ever heard come through my speakers :(

  • there will never be another voice as beautiful never!!!!!!

  • Uma voz inesquecível. Esta canção também. Saudades de teus fãs brasileiros! Carpenters pra sempre!!!

  • What an amazing voice! After all these years, we still miss her!

  • pure gorgeous...and anyone who disagrees is entitled..and is also pure ugly.

  • this song must be about me :(

  • Ich chyba najpiękniejsza piosenka!

  • I have to stop reading all these comments when I listen to the Voice...it always ends the same : I'm in tears from her voice and your words, all of you. Who does not love KC? It's almost never that I read a Negative ... we're all writing love notes to the One who didn't understand how special she was and how much she meant.

  • @iamintheburg

Well said. She could connect with the listener on an emotional and spriItual level beyond words :))

  • listen to Rumer she has a very similar voice to Karen

  • Every time I hear her, I always wonder what she was thinking about when she recorded their songs. What thoughts were making those notes and that feeling come out? I'll never have an answer.

  • A voice from heaven absolutely gorgeous

  • omg this song is soo sad.but i cant stop listneing to it...

  • I grew up with her blessed voice; There are no words that can describe the wonderful memories her voice brings to mind. When the time comes for me to leave this world I hope to give her a big hug when I meet her in Heaven.

  • I once read that Karen didn't like this song, but I wonder how that can be true when it sounds like she poured her soul into this rendition.

  • @Purplecatsoup30 I loved "poured her soul". But Karen does this with all her songs...

  • She looks like Keeley Smith in the one picture

  • clay aiken does a good cover too

  • elvis would be proud.

  • fab

  • Karen had a strong, clear Voice. It was so pure it goes right through you. Especially when she sings Solitaire. What a talent. Her death so sad. R.I.P.

  • @mpolanetz

    Amen!

  • POOR LOVE.......ONE OF THE RICHEST WOICES IN HISTORY.

  • what an amazing vocal range she had..and have only been listening to the carpenters for about 3 months( don't know why, its either because music today stinks or i am getting old or both apply) but she has such a mesmerizing a voice ,have been mesmerized for 3 months now.karen carpenter you are still awesome.

  • @polyestersuits4ever It's the first three months of the rest of your life. Believe it. Trust me........you don't outgrow or forget or tire of that VOICE. Congrats and welcome .... get ready to hear your heart and feel it grow.

  • @polyestersuits4ever

She had 4 octaves of pure bliss which is very rare for a pop singer. The late great Freddie Mercury had 3 so that gives you some idea how special she was and yes when you listen to Top 40 radio today you realise there's nobody that comes remotely close to Karen's incredible vocals.

  • @Purple1984Rain- yes, freddie and karen may have 2 of the most unique voices ever..they both had amazing vocal ranges.you can really hear karen carpenters range on this song.

  • Ms Carpenter had an INCREDIBLE voice. God rest her beautiful soul.

  • Richard's productions showcased the finest and most moving female voice in history, Karen was pitch perfect and her rendition of this song just drips with emotion. True soul music and true genius.

  • I'm only here because of Craig Ferguson's 58-second Tweetmail from tonight.

  • @eruption257 --

What do you mean? I was watching Conan! :P :D :)

  • @eruption257 me too.. i dug the melody.

  • @eruption257

Such a beautiful, soulfull song, the voice of an angel, god bless Karen.

Thank you for your beautiful voice. She really understood love, pain and the struggle of life.

  • She was the best. We really got robbed when she was taken so young. I love a lot of todays young female vocalists, but lets face it, none of them have a voice this powerful and moving. They could re-release her songs and they'd go right to number 1.

  • I've read before that Karen did not care for this song. If that is true, she deserves a lot of extra credit for recording it with such feeling! It would be harder to put one's heart into a song, I would think, if one didn't like it in the first place. Such a beautiful job she did!

  • @jleegivens

Karen was such a gifted vocalist I doubt she could sing poorly even if she didn't initiially like a particular song :))

  • @jleegivens

Maybe by the time the vocals were recorded, the fact that she didn't like the song also conveyed the "given up" feeling of the character in the song.

Other than that - I'd say it comes down to her professionalism.

  • I always remember this song when I am playing... , , ... Lineage II.

  • The best voice ever.

  • There is still no one who can approach Karen's vocal prowess. And I doubt there will ever be, again. The words of Mary Baker Eddy seem to apply to her:

"Pilgrim on earth, heaven is (indeed) thy home,

Stranger, thou art the guest of God."

You will always be remembered and missed.

  • great song, greater singer

  • thank u for your response. there really is not much to say anymore about this super talented woman. she had been described in all sort of ways, be it positive or negative.but there is one thing that she cannot be denied, her being ONE OF A KIND.

  • Simply the best...x

  • i cry each time i hear this song one of my all time favourites her clarity her tone noone has that today in the world of music

  • Gone WAY too soon! Her voice was captivating, and one of the most beautiful I have ever heard! Heaven has an angel!

  • Karen was so honest and pure, unlike most female artists today who will go as far as exposing their bodies for attention. And although I enjoy some skin here and there, I lose a great deal of respect for these new artists. I will never lose an ounce of respect or love for Karen.

  • @mclovin9535 Thats because singers like Karen Carpenter& Stevie Nicks have true talent unlike the new singers

  • @mclovin9535 Thankyou, you honestly have no idea, how much I have been waiting, for someone,to say exactly those words you have quoted. There will never be another Karen. Karen, is the only female artist, in all forms of Music,Art,Poetry. That brings a tear to my eye. Through her voice & honesty, I miss Karen so much, I am not ashamed to say it. Karen was one of a kind. 1 of the greatest female Singer/Artist's that ever lived. God Bless. We miss you, Love You Forever & Always Karen xx

  • @mclovin9535 - There are a few singers coming up who are tipping that balance. Check out 'Kimbra' from New Zealand and Lana Del Ray who is now getting lots of exposure. Lana Del Ray is on the up and Kimbra will be better known in America by the end of this year. Watch for them. Katy Perry, Beyonce, etc. are not even in their league.

  • Karen, you had the most perfect voice ever recorded.

  • @csmztg The lady could sing. Nobody these days comes even close to her talent.

  • really, i heard it on american top fourty while pucking geese at home when i was a kid ! i luv that song and totally became a carpenter's since then and today ! that last note, really hit hard, playing sooooooooooollllllitairrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre with her wonderful alto voice, karen's voice is from another universe !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Seven people are playing solitaire!

  • I just realize that Richard Carpenter totally looks alike Jean-Claude Van Damme.

  • Karen fue un ángel que alegró los mejores años de mi vida. Y que tendió un puente con mi madre que amaba su voz. Como no voy a amar a esta dulzura y lamentar su estúpida muerte. Además parte de mi familia viene de Australia

  • I love you RIP

  • ''... playing solitaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiire'''

    I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooove this last note!!!

  • Comment removed

  • A voice like no other...simply beautiful!

  • Shelly Duvall SHOULD have played Karen Carpenter in at least one of movies that was made about her back in the 80's ....although NO actress alive could even attempt to even actually sing Karen's song for real

  • All the money & talent could not help Karen. Who as mentioned is right up there with the best female voices ever. What a shame. I was 11 when they sang & never even thought of all this sadness & unhealthy body weights as a red flag to her demise. Knowing what we know today, she might still be alive. All this foolish stars in re-habs & jails. could care less of their public image & Karen Carpenter hid in the shadows. It's a Shame. RIP.

  • next to Barbra Streisand the greats Female Vocalist of all time...I cried when she died

  • @robmars09

I think you have that backwards :))

  • Aunque no es original de Carpenters, amo esta canción con la voz de Karen.

  • Beautiful voice!

  • a voice of an angel. a voice that has the same effect on your heart as violin strings!

  • She wasn't one of the best, she was THE best, singer ever!

  • If only todays singers were of this class. One of the best female vocalists ever .

  • I don't even like 70s love songs.. I prefer hard rock and metal.. But this woman could sing like no other! I find myself drawn to listen to this music all the time.. Her voice is unbelievable!

  • The sounds of angels. This is the most moving and beautiful thing I've ever heard.

  • cried listening 2 this song!

  • The mostly auto tuned artist of today wish they could sing half this well....what passes for talent these days (there are a few exceptions) is a friggin crime!!

  • @ilovecpp2013 Joe McElderry has made a new recording of this and it is lovely. It is on his second album Classic.

  • from heaven, must be an angel

  • Will we ever experience a better female singer? I think not. Her voices is simply fantastic, it moves me so. Such a waste that she contributed to ending her life by starving herself to death.

  • Not many female artist today have such a strong voice to do a song like this. She was and still is able to have and hold the title GREAT!

  • Incredibly beautiful. There is something in her voice that is eternal,

  • HEY WHO THE FUCK DISLIKE THIS? motherfuckers..

  • this is the reason why i am so hooked up with the Carpenters. that voice, it's just like a magnet that keeps on pulling you while listening to her. wow! i am so amazed at the talent of this woman. Karen Carpenter, simply the best and second to none. we love you and miss you greatly. we will cherish all the songs that YOU and RICHARD made together. CARPENTERS forever.

  • @carpenter1030

Very well said and I agree completely. It's impossible for me not to listen to that voice without getting goosebumps. :))

  • I remember hearing of her death on the radio going up to visit my cousin at college. I thought it was one of the saddest things i had ever heard

  • Karen, anima mia R.I.P. :(

  • Incredible voice....such a shame it ended way to soon...rip Karen

  • amazing artist

  • awesome!

  • wonderful~ miss u Karen....

  • @kryzine58 She died of a heart failure - complications of anorexia. She was only 32. What a loss!

  • Shear brilliance................

Recognised as such and will be one of those that may never be surpased.

Karen was simply one in a billion!

  • you're great karen...i love this song

  • She was so gifted, I'm moved to tears listening to this.

  • @aoxomoxoa88 I listen to metal music.. Iron Maiden and the likes.. But I have to admit, this woman was unbelievable

  • @cncdolphins

I think Karen's voice transcended any and all musical styles. It's like when you hear Hendrix play guitar. It's pure musical genuis and connects with you in a way that you can't describe. It's nice to see hard rockers like yourself giving The Carpenters ttheir dues. Peace! :))

  • Such a pure voice and a great talent. No one does this song better. I really miss good music. Now it seems all I hear is noise!

  • So much talent, such a great lady, a voice no woman has come close to, not Streisand, not Aretha, Dione Warwick, certainly not Gaga, or even Carrie Underwood, though I like her a lot. Evertime I hear Karen's voice I think she's only topped by one other singer, Elvis Presley. Imagine what heaven sounds like as they sing together. Save me the front row please.

  • I still miss her and cry every time I hear her voice. She was a natural talent! Today's artists don't have a clue and the only sound they generate is out of the studio.

  • 4 people have never played Solitare

  • When I was little (in the 90s) I would listen to the "Oldies" station at night while I slept, because it helped with my gripping fear of the dark-

This song - and many of theirs- but this one mainly- were some of the very first pieces of music that actually brought me to tears not because they stirred some memory- but purely of their own narrative value.

I'm very blessed to come from a musical family- and the songs I get the most praise for are the Karen ones. Her influence spreads far.

  • @Treemeadow

It's nice to see real musicians appreciate the gifts of Richard and Karen's enormous talents. Thanks for sharing your story :))

  • SO beautiful

  • ESSA MÚSICA NA MINHA OPINIÃO É A MAIS LINDA DA DUPLA. FANTÁSTICOS!

  • Are those "dislike" people sane ?

  • @gartheped1 never mind the -ve votes, they don't know what she means to us, and i'm not even american.

  • @horsesrule53 good for you,at least you can discern between good and some of the lousy stuff they call music today!

  • Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, THE greatest female singing voice ever recorded. PERIOD.

  • @mrbill7373 I quite agree. Had the honour to be at a concert in Amsterdam in 1974:

  • @mrbill7373 I won't disagree.

  • @mrbill7373

No need to convince me. I'be been saying that since I first heard her a s a kid. Karen's voice came from another Universe!!

  • Masterpiece! I have no words!!

  • I've never heard anything in her voice which was wrong, perfection.

  • i keep playing this over and over again. great song, great voice. i also like sissel's version, although it is a bit different

  • Karen Carpenter was, and always will be, my favorite female singer.

Tony Peluso is gone now, too. He was 60 years old. :(

Thanks so much for uploading this.

  • I believe that today's media for music, i.e. CD's, MP3 players, etc. do not have the warmth and personal feel that can be obtained by playing an LP on a turntable with a good stylus....Don't get me wrong.....I love CD's and MP3 players but for some reason the total sound is not quite the same.

  • It's the low notes at the end that are chilling to listen to. The female voice, and in the contralto range as Karen possessed, are breathtakingly and hauntingly beautiful...pure crystalline silk!!

  • @cd72 Absolutely true. But in fact every note is ... breathtaking. I've just listened my way through various versions sung by the man who wrote the song, Neil Sedaka. I wonder what he himself thinks? There's no doubt for me that Karen Carpenter's version of his "Solitaire" is THE interpretation I want to hear. But you're right, her low notes are amazing.

  • @cd72

Hi Please explain what is "caltro alto" I'm obsessed with Karen's voice and want to hear from other singer's as to why this woman had the most beautiful voice I've evern heard. :)))

  • Greatest version of any pop song ever. Karen's masterpiece. this should be taught in music schools to all serious students of Voice as to how to achieve vocal perfection.

  • hermosisima cancion de los carpenters, bellisima voz de karen carpenter, que Dios lo tenga en su gloria .

  • Karen Carpenter singing Solitaire - pure silk - nobody comes close to singing this song as purely as her!

  • I agree with chocchip.....but i was born at the right time

  • The voice of an angel. She was truly the greatest blessing in the musical world. Each time I hear her voice I am truly blessed. Karen left us way to soon. Happy Belated birthday Karen. (March 4th) I miss you.

  • @rohricwl -- I agree that the voting is dominated by people who haven't experienced enough of the rock era (back through the 70's at least) to get a reasonable opinion of the talent that has existed over time. Anyone who has listened to Karen Carpenter through a whole album and then compared her to any female singer born after 1980 would realize the difference. The older music is superior in almost every case; there's hardly any comparison.

  • @Newton2041 Amen...hallelujah...I second that emotion...couldn't agree more....you hit the nail on the head! Most "singers" of today should take note, they might learn a thing or 2.

  • she is magical; she makes me melt

  • unforgetable...............

  • Karen girl, thank you x

  • Co-written by Neil Sedaka.

  • This performance was a great example of Karen's tremendous ability. She was so easy to listen to. She had excellent breath control, phrasing, diction, dynamics and was always right on the note. Truly a timeless talent with a voice that seems to "fit" regardless of the era in which it's heard.
