The thing was, that year, the Yankees had a starting outfield of Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu, with a younger, faster Melky Cabrera as the primary back-up. I'm not so sure a fifth outfielder would have been that good use of a roster space. Of course, they shot themselves in the foot that year by using the Doug Mientkiewicz/Josh Phelps platoon at first base. The better use of the roster space? Use Mientkiewicz's Gold Glove at first most of the time and use Bernie as an OF/1B.
didnt get his just due imo. 16 loyal years, stood true in 1998 wen boston offered more money and he kept those pinstripes even being slapped in the face with their original offer. 300 career avg, 280 hrs, 1300 rbi 5 gold gloves and 4 rings. most franchise postseason hr's, rbi, and second in hits. was solid player, he didnt put up griffey or bonds numbers but he was a winner, never stirred contraversy and he was loved by the fans and was as clutch as you get
Wow i thought i was the only one that felt that Mr.Bernie Williams didn't get treated by the orginazation the way he deserve to be treated he is and will always be a class act i think what Bernie deserved was to be able to go out on his own terms and be able to get his 300th Career homerun and finish his career with over 2500 hits that was more than possible and the yankees shitted on that .
bernie was a true yankee, his number will be retired along with jeter and mariano when the time comes, too bad yankees let him go after his decent 06 season
I feel that Bernie shouldve gotten the captains spot in 2001. He won a glove glove years before jeter, and won a batting title. He also holds the record for yankee home runs in the playoffs #2 in ML. He deserves alot more credit.
The Yanks should have given Bernie whatever he wanted, the guy is a "true" Yankee, a proven winner, and a legend. There is no way he should have gone out on bad terms.
BERNIE IS THE REALDEAL WHY SHOULD HE BECOME A BACK-UP PLAYER.he is not being selffish.he still has not been replace.those bum playing center will never be better than bernie
I was a yankee fan for 31 year but now I WILL NOT WASTE MY TIME THESE BUM A-ROD ISOVER RATE D THE CENTERFEILD SUCK. BERNIE WAS BETTER THAN ALL THESE BUM LOVE YOU BERNIE
im a big yankee fan, my favorite team, but i wanna beat the shit out of the yankees for not getting bernie back. i will never forget that! bernie... forever young!
i love bernie i love bernie i love bernie everyone should love bernie he is a blueblooded yankee to the core i am so grateful that i had the chance to grow up watchin him. i dont think you get to see such grace and skill very often in your life. its a once in a lifetime thing. yes it is
Bernie is not being proud or being selfish...He is a great player with great ability, and he can start in ANY major league team...except for the yanks...why? b/c they have no room. He is being loyal to his fans, and his team, by not moving to another team...thats loyalty, not greed!
The Yanks did him dirty. you don't do that to a franchise player.

I agree..I think he hit like .287 in 2006, and look what happened after he left? Chaos in the outfield...
