Some rats learn quickly (within 40mins) while others can take up to an hr or more with your own time as investment. Its the rate at which you reinforce their behavior which determines how quickly they learn. Its a good idea to gradually ease into shaping specific behaviors that is, first reward them for nearing the lever, then touching the lever and finally for pushing it. Eventually, they learn to push the lever themselves and you dont need to manually reinforce anymore.
