Also to answer the engine question. How did the "Puddle Jumper" fly underwater? it just used its engines and used the Shield as a means to do so!

they disabled the shields so as to power the Engines fora brief time. then when they can engage there Hyperdrive they re-enabled the shield while slowly cutting the engines power out.

All we know is she's not in season 4, because Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter) replaces her. That would mean they either got too earth or went too a nearby planet and used a ZPM to 8 chevron dial home. I'm sure she'll live, but if she doesn't, SGA's loss.
