I work at a restaurant where I operate a machine that cuts several onions at a time. The machine can slice up to 9 onions per minute and I would cut up to 50 onions per day. At first cutting 50 onions in 5 minutes would was very unbearable but after a couple of weeks I developed some kind of tolerance to it and it doesn't bother me now.
Another thing that helps is to have some vinegar on the cutting board. The acid dissolves the enzymes that create the gas. The only problem is that your kitchen, now smells like vinegar and your onions taste like vinegar. But this is a great vid by the way. One thing that I'd suggest is that for each method, cut a couple onions. After being a chef for 11 years I can tell you that there's no fool proof way of preventing tears except for the goggle thing. But who's going to wear goggles?
For some reason onions do not make my little sister cry at all ( no tricks) but at the same time it works on my mother. So it is definitely not the type of onions.
So I am confused. The chemical produced that irritates the tear glands should work on every one the same, right? SO why do they not affect my sister?

Another way to avoid crying, is to fight through the ''pain'', its not that hard. And its not very painfull.
So what? You shed a few tears, its not the end of the world. All these ways to avoid crying through chopping onions, makes me laugh.
Just cut it fast, and be done with it!

@herrpotat Except when you're halfway through an onion and you can't see what you're cutting because your vision is so blurred by tears.....lol.
