The dog would have been killed if this was the case. The Polar is the largest of all bears and largest land carnivore.

Polar bears are one of the few predators that will hunt humans given the chance. If you meet a hungry polar bear and you don't have a rifle, you're as good as dead.

I've heard, and don't know how true it is, that a black bear will hunt humans, but haven't heard the same of brown bears. Again I don't know how true that is, but is curious if it is.

Some bears are seasonal carnivores. Right before hibernation, they will binge on anything they can find. A few of these species may go for humans, but it is far more likely to be a victim of an attack caused by being too close to a mother and her cubs than an outright hunt.

That's what I've always been told. The worse thing to do is to surprise a bear, or get between a mother and her cub, wish I could remember who told me about the black bear sometimes stalking humans.

The only difference between a Black Bear and a Brown Bear is the colour, and they do not hunt humans. A Grizzly tho,is a different breed, and WILL had HAS actually hunted down humans. Grizzlys cannot climb trees because they do not have retractable claws. That is how one can defferentiate between a Grizzly and other bears when observing their tracks.

The grizzly, is related to the brown bear, though the black bear can have brown, as well as other colours of fur. I've heard from a few people over the years with outdoor experience about black bears stalking humans, though I haven't seen that myself. I'm sure grizzlies have hunted humans, though I hear that that is more out of character for them. Personally, I'm not a hunter, though do like to camp, so my interactions with the animals doesn't happen as often as them.

furthermore, polar bears are not a threat to humans. the death in 1999 of a Baker Lake woman following an attack by a polar bear was the first in 25 yrs. nearly all such encounters involve a starving bear or a bear that was provoked to attack.

There was a video on Youtube a while back where a one male Polar Bear met a group of huskey's in the Artic and they had a disagreement, I think its been removed. Needlessly to say after the encounter the Huskeys were fewer in number.

You seem to refer to Canadian Eskimo dogs co-existing with Polar's. It was feeding time and the male Polar went for the dog's food, the dog was defending and the bear grabbed it by the tail and launched it through the air. The dog only had part of its tail amputated and is alive. The bear was only reacting to the dog's actions and had no intention of a confrontation or fight. The dog would have been killed if this was the case. The Polar is the largest of all bears and largest land carnivore.
