If you aren't recording where these artifacts are located, then you are nothing but a "looter" who is helping to destroy this country's history. To be a responsible amateur archaeologist, you should always mark on a USGS Topo map where the sites are, what artifacts are found there, dimensions of the site's size, and then fill out a State Historic Archaeology Site Form. If the artifacts are found on your property, they are yours and nobody else's.

do you start digging in an area or do you have some idea of where there might be an old burn pit or outhouse?
