Local indy wrestlers that the WWF/E would use would get hurt (I remember the Rockers seriously injured a local jobber which cost the WWF/E a pretty penny. I believe they broke his neck IIRC). Also as time went on in the 90's ECW also helped kill the jobber matches. Would you rather watch local jobber X on RAW putting over Razor Ramon for the millionth time or would you rather watch Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero?
what about super cena being immune to all finishers and not losing legitimately for like 2 years in attitude era at least all the best would lose to each other
The attitude era was great but it wasnt the only good time in wrestling,2001- 2003 WWE was still very good. The match quality was great in those years, actual MATCH quality.Raw and Smackdown were the best in the attitude era,but actual match/pay per view quality goes to 2001-2003..although 2000 was the best year for wwe in my opinion...2000 had it all.

@EAW56 no, i do. you can not follow a shooting with a stabbing, it lacks excitement after you go crazy. That is why the attitude era killed wrestling.

GREAT VID. Read a lot of the comments. Not surprising to see that the basis of this vid went right over the heads of that "attitude era generation" you mentioned. Every single reason you gave was on point. Honestly... I don't see the WWE maintaining past the year 2020. MACHO MADNESS LIVES ON! OH YEEEAAAAHHHH!!!
time moves on and things change.. yea, overtime things do get old, so you have to keep progressing and progressing until the high points of the past have eventually become old and mid points... Why don't you go out and find a bunch of amateur wrestlers and get together a team and create a new wrestling brand and become this generations Vince McMahon!! cause i agree.. the WWE now is getting old and TNA sucks.. anythings possible and you sound like you know what youre talking about..
You make some decent points, but the crux of your video seems to be that the 'attitude era' was bad because wrestling sucks NOW. That's oversimplifying your message, sure, but saying 'the attitude era was bad' is also quite an oversimplification.
It's likely there would be no WWE had there not been an 'attitude era', they were going broke.
You can't blame 'the past', WWE has had over a decade to get it's shit together in the aftermath of the 'attitude era'.
Nothing is perfect except Mr. Perfect. Attitude era wasn't perfect, but the question is, were we entertained? Absolutely YES.
Late 90's early 2000's, people used to watch WWF/E because they actually loved it. Now, most watch it because they just want something to watch whether they like it or not.
@Zar26793 That's essentially what it was. I know Heyman's shoot in 2001 was a work, but a lot of what he said about Attitude being a wannabe of ECW was true.
I dont like attitude era because gimmick are tasteless..pimp,pornstar,vampire,naked mideon, queer goldust and lot of talent who have nothing to do with wrestling. controversy. When WCW went out of business that was a part that i'll have to agree with you that it hurted WWE. However it's not WWE's fault if WCW could'nt keep up with them. With the PG era what's lacking is ENTERTAINMENT. That's why the attitude era was so successful. It was Entertaining. Now WWE is all about little kids. It's like the WWE said fuck the attitude era fans. We're gonna change our ways and change our fan base. Which they did and it worked since they lost a lot of fans but that
I can agree with you to a certain extent. The attitude era was so great that now the bar can not be set any higher for now. However it's not totally all the attitude era's fault. When WWE decided to go PG that's when ratings became lower and lower. WWE superstars can no longuer swear and talk trash like they used to, WWE can't have blood in their matches and don't use as much weapons as they used to because of the PG TV. there wasn't much in the video that I can disagree with. I don't really see wrestling lasting another 10 years but I hope im wrong. I know one thing though if triple h ends undertakers streak considering he has nothing to gain, I don't think I will be watching Vince's product anymore.
early 90's wrestling was...uuuu yeah!!!! Attitude era was FUCKING ENTERTAINING came along with great wrestling ability package (blood, gore, wrestler's gimmicks n trademarks)
The Atttiude Era was certainly entertaining, but I loved the late 80's and early 90's more. Why? Because of the wrestlers. They were larger than life. Hogan, Macho Man etc. Good times.
Your title is mis-leading. I was ready to rip you for saying the Attitude era was bad. The fact that they can't keep useing some of the things you mentioned in this video is something I can agree with, but you will never get me to say it was a bad era.
Nah the Attitude era was the most entertaininggg period in wrestling. Not necessarily skillwise but entertaining....but if there was no Austin the WWF woulda been 6 feet under years ago. Believe that....but yeah it was just a fun time to watch it. 99 kinda sucked at times tho like giving Chyna the intercontinental championship lol
The title is misleading. The Attitude Era was so good that the people these days became attitude era wannabes. Cena is a wannabe Rock, Punk is a wanna be Austin, Jack Swagger is a wannabe Kurt Angle, etc. etc. These needs to stop being wannabes and start being original. Dont blame it on the Attitude Era.
I am a member of the "Attitude Era Generation." I think the Attitude Era is as god as wrestling has ever been...but you make a lot of good points. I've gone back and watched things from the Golden Era and that was damn good too. Schlegdaddy...this is a kick ass video. It opened my eyes a bit and anyone who will go back and watch things from the Golden Era, I think, would be enlightened too. Just sayin.
Plus the Mid-card has NEVER been utilized as good as it was during the Attitude era... And with fans as impatient as they are today not wanting to watch storylines all the way through till the end before shooting them down..I just don't think these past wrestling methods would hold up..Or even keep wrestling afloat..And even pre-Attitude era fans were getting tired of the staleness..Hence the booing of Hulk Hogan..Leading to the change of character..And possibly the birth of the Attitude era.
But the product had to change with the times..Could you imagine how predictable wrestling today if everything you just mentioned was still happening..I mean really Cena would have a 6 year title reign.. How stale would his character be then..I mean if the heels one the very first match of every feud.. What would be the purpose to tune into the first PPV match.. Why pay $40 for a match card where you know every winner.. And the match ends with 5 mins..cause one of the competitors hit a finisher.
LOL yeah the attitude era sucked.thats why pay-per-views are at all time lows LOL!by all means lets go on pretending that this isn't due to terrible characters from the WE(cena,NEW kane, babyface hhh,no personality batista, tough guy kurt angle(he was 10 x better as a funny heel)cm punk's ego and lame trash talking *cough*clown shoes*cough*)face it dude, the wwf was at its best when the rock, austin, cool taker, mankind,OLD kane,OLD jericho etc. hence the ALL TIME HIGHS in revenue back then!LOL FAIL!
@mikallink actually, i think 2010 was their best year...i kinda surprised me when i heard...but that is when nexus was at its best, still, yeah, ae was great
Complaining theres no jobber matches? Really? Heard of the funkasauraus recently? And guess what.. those matches are FUCKING TERRIBLE. Jobber matches are predictable and boring and im glad they are dying.
You also complained about getting HIGH QUALITY MATCHES outside of PPV's.
Jesus fuck. I cant beleive thats a legit complaint. I mad.
@eobb1 lmfao its actually quite funny when u think about it dude would rather see cm punk vs brooklyn brawler then cm punk vs daniel bryan shit is so comical.I want to see whats hes going to be bitching about 10 years from now whiners will whine haters will hate.
I think of the WWE in this light (no pun intended, you'll see what I mean in a second)
The wwe is like a big star. Over the years it's grown, and grown, and grown, now it's to the point where everything revolves around it. Unfortunately, while it's grown, and continues to grow, it's destroying itself in the process. It's also gotten to the point where it's inevitable self-destruction will be a giant, ugly, messy supernova, unlike our sun which (If I'm right) will create a beautiful nebula...tbc
Oh, and another one: blaming WWF for ECW failing because they got the idea to be extreme? Wow, bro...your arguement is so lame. So ECW worked solely on schtick, and had no real substance...that's WWF's fault? Vince saw something that worked, and he did it. What the hell is your point? ECW couldn't evolve. Yes, they were innovative, but ECW was DESTINED TO FAIL and it would have happened sooner but Vince was funding them!!! That WWF's fault, too?
@DUBtheTIGER Teah, but that wasn't the booking of ECW that was the problem. The problem was that Paul Heyman, while a great booker, was a god fucking awful businessman.
For almost everything you say, there's a disclaimer that "it worked with great performers"...so what you're saying is, these guys today aren't as good as the guys were a decade ago. Yup
This is a good video for explaining why this era sucks. But the Attitude era was still the best shit ever. They were kicking ass back then, but maybe it was too much of a good thing.
I understand what he is saying. He made some valid points,However the attitude era was necessary in order for the wwe to compete with wcw. It may have hurt the company in the long run,But they had to take drastic measures because they were getting their asses kicked in the ratings.
You make great points like you always do however, the attitude era saved wrestling, because it was also about WCW and ECW to if they would jump ship they you would have a lot of well know stars instead of the nxt's,indy' and TNA. the superstars had more control over their characters. Vince, his company, and Linda is killing PG.
You can't attribute originality to some of your points. Of course things are going to get repeated, that's the very essence of time. 10 Years from now things won't be different, they will just be slight variations on the way things are now. 99% of the music that gets released today can be said to be an exact copy of music that got released 60 years ago, nothing is original anymore so you can't blame the WWE for the recycling of storylines.
you miss the attitude era coz u like wresting an ur the same age as me, an miss old jericho, edge rock austin, i bet u liked christian in TNA, thts why u hate wwe ,, an yes cena is stagnent..
You had many good points but I disagree with your main idea that the blame for the pg era being bad is because of standard of great quality wrestling shows that the attitude era set.
This guy is such a negative jackass. Professional wrestling's greatest time period was 1997-2000. AKA - "The Attitude Era." Deal with it, Negative Nancy.
So I'm 20 years of age, and I didn't take Wrestling serious when i was a child. I thought it was stupid and fake, and that Rock, Austin, and stupid segment after stupid segment stuff was a bunch of childish bullshit. It wasn't until around 2004-05 when i started taking Wrestling serious. When guys like Lesnar, Angle, Jericho, Benoit and Eddie were having these amazing feuds over titles. My ideal WRESTLING show is this. A roster of athletes compete to be the champion while personalities clash.
u r an idiot. things change for the better. the attitude era was great. wrestling today is great. yeah there r weaknesses in some parts of each era but there will always be room for improvement. nothing you said made sense. ur opinion isnt wrong, its just different from mine.
Had they not gone over the top in the Attitude Era, they would have probably been put out of business by WCW. Their backs were against the wall. Do I agree it has left us with a stagnant, stale current product? Yes. The Attitude Era was 85% compelling, addictive television and I wouldn't trade it for the WORLD.
For the record on the ECW thing, and maybe you know this, but in the Taker/Mankind Hell in the Cell match, the cage wasn't supposed to break on the choke slam, that was totally unplanned. Undertaker said this in a 2002 interview on Off the Record.
the over exposure of wrestling in general is the biggest problem the entire industry has today. there's 6 hours...SIX HOURS a week of programming in just the wwe alone. like you said, years ago it was just raw. one hour a week. and even before that you had superstars/wrestling challenge. everything meant more then. now there isn't a NEED to watch everything live...or ever watch at all. people can read results, watch on youtube etc. wrestling just isnt that important anymore to the fans
I agree with #4, as I too am a fan who started watching during the Hogan era, back when he and guys like Bret Hart, Luger and Shawn Michaels were stars, so my attachment to the Attitude era is not as strong as those who started watching at that time and think that's what wrestling should be. I actually have much more love for the post-Attitude era, at best to be 2002-2007. It was still edgy, but sans the agenda of trash TV and shock for its own sake, the WWE focused more on wrestling.
Continued... I couldn't agree more that building the product to the pay per view created so much excitement and anticipation. I love how they would build the characters and how every wrestler was recognizable. Today they all look the same, they all speak the same. WWE really lacks characters which is sad. It was such an exciting thing to tune in Saturday at 12 and watch Superstars when I was a kid. The Golden era really had something though.
I've been watching many of your reviews especially on the Big four Pay Per Views. I myself am in agreement that the Attitude era went too far. I'm a huge fan of the golden era!!! I'm 29 years old, grew up with Hogan, Macho, and Warrior. I watched Attitude but I'll be honest it just didn't hook me like the Hogan days. I agree totally, Attitude era just blew a massive load all in one shot and had nothing to give afterwards. Wrestling to me is dead now. I don't watch the current product
Im not known to be an ass kisser but this guy makes a ton of sense. Since the attitude era the company pushed to hard they wanted to impress mainly (correct me if im wrong) because of compitition. And they just messed up the business because of that you know there are some flaws in this vid but he makes sense. If you had a ton of money what would you do? Make more. Thats sometimes what it is to Vince yet he cares for this business and is deticated to it and so am i. I love wresteling since i w
i miss wwf big time the era rocked wresting now is so stale very rarely exciting no surprises really same old same old BORING stopped watching a few years ago back now again YAWN wwe money grapping thats all its about now selling shirts and products cena needs to go or change heel quick god damme and the roster is so small its hard to watch this crap same matches over and over and guess wat cena and orton always win
Loving all the angry comments from the kids who obsess about the attitude era but weren't actually there to watch lol. Anything that annoys those nerds is good by me! great vid!
I agree with this video, another thing that is hurting wrestling (wwe) is the fact that there are no more interviews with the commentators in the ring. Also they should never allow two guys feuding make contact with each other before the PPV. The action needs to be saved for the PPV and not given away on TV for free.
you cant really blame wwe keeping same people in top spots now on attitude era. also things evolve. simple things used to work and now they dont so youd rather go back to simple things? thats like saying the reason wwe is bad now is because it was so good then. so it would of been better if it wasnt so good then. no. wwe needs to step it up now
while I disagree that the Attitude Era was bad (actually I thought it was quite good), I can understand why it was bad for wrestling and why it's lead to the stagnation that's developed over the past few years, good video
wow all of your videos are negative 15 reasons why so and so sucks.. do you ever make any positive videos about good things that happened or have happened in wrestling?
@G1S1W i know its his opinion, but if you think things in wrestling suck so much where you have the need to do video after video listing how much it sucks, then the question must be asked.. why do you even bother watching wrestling if you find everything about it sucks?
dude, this is genius! you really have this all figured out, and it's like now that I listen to what u've said, I'm like "duh" lol this is soo true. Everyone's like "Fck the PG era, bring Attitude back!" but it's because of the Attitude Era that the now PG era "sucks"...and it's not that PG sucks, there is potential for this PG era to be GREAT, its no the rating that horrible, its the WWE writers of today and 110% of everything you said in this video.
with 11. I agree, I remember watching Chris Masters use his Master Lock and everybody would just break out of it making it no point to use that finisher
i agree. the "overrated" era as the IWC calls it. it was also a mere ripoff of ECW as Paul Heyman said. watching it when i was growing up was awesome but it gets really annoying hearing fans whine, bitch, and complain about the attitude era, overlooking todays era of wrestlers. vince was so fixated on wiping out WCW and spoiling the fans. i agree with the video 100%
Heels getting heat example is the current Wade Barrett and Orton match. Barret gets one up on Orton one week, and a few weeks after Orton just owns him like he's a nobody! So much for the build up on Barrett. They build them up ok, until they take on the top guy on the show, and then they deflate and lose heat because they think they can't afford to have the top guy look weak. It's annoying as shit!
But also characters like kane stone cold rock got me back into wrestling after hogan etc left, the AE got me back into wrestling. But the direction was unpredictable, and how the shows were done on RAW had me hooked. It was a journey I will never forget, and it just did not last long enough. I used to stay over my grans on a friday, she had cable and I watched RAW IS WAR no spoilers, fridays was my Bday when it came to wrestling on a friday and I truly miss those days like no other
Offtheropesshow - great great great vid mun, a great balanced view on the attitude era, not being a smark and calling it overrated, but saying the true facts. I grew up in the golden generation and especially the attitude era, and for different reasons they will never be topped. Some of the characters in the attitude era was some of the greatest of all time, they did set the bar to hight. Even the ruthless aggression era could not get anywhere near the attitude era, and that had some roster
every era has it perks and drawbacks. I really think pg era gets too much hate pg isn't really a issue its the booking i know i would love to see hornswoggle gone. Attitude era has its cons so did the golden era. Nothings perfect all have pros and cons
the attitude era isn't to blame for MOST of the garbage we are getting today,I agree with you about wwe having to build stars now rather than plucking them from another company but they built Cena,Batista,Brock,Orton,Jeff, after the attitude era so I think it's still the storylines that are to blame and Rock put over Brock then left,Brock put over Eddie then left Eddie died,HHH put over Benoit,Benoit put over Orton then the Benoit incident,I think wwe would be in better shape if they were alive
Trust me, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero would have retired by now. Both men were well into their 30's when they died. Plus, with Benoit's mental health condition prior to the tragic incident, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Same thing goes for Eddie Guerrero.
@Y2Raze I don't know if they would have retired by now but either way they would have been able to put over younger talent before they did so people would actually be interested in the younger talent
throwing people through flaming tables, falling off hell in a cell, driving out beer trucks, stone cold dropping a car from a forklift with God in it...you can go anywhere from there! it's not there fault that Cena,Orton and the phony writers they have these days can only come up with days of our lives storylines.
Nobody wants to see jobber matches.Who wants to see some nobody in tights get his ass kicked for 10 mins, that does not get wrestlers over, just makes everybody use the bathroom at the same time. I watch most of the videos that you post and i agree with most of what you say.I was also a kid during the Hogan era so we both should be pissed at where the business is today! love your vids bro, keep them coming, more entertainging than Raw these days.peace!
I look at a perfect wrestling angle like a good action movie. The hero emerges and is introduced to the audience by taking down a couple of jobbers to establish himself to the viewer. The villain becomes established by taking out jobbers. Both the hero and villain are getting established without touching and at the same time still furthering their angle through promos. The villain thwarts the hero at every corner garnering heat. The hero eventually challenges the villain to a match and wins.
If i wanted to hear an asshole talk i would have farted

TubbyTater 6 days ago
But the product had to change with the times..Could you imagine how predictable wrestling today if everything you just mentioned was still happening..I mean really Cena would have a 6 year title reign.. How stale would his character be then..I mean if the heels one the very first match of every feud.. What would be the purpose to tune into the first PPV match.. Why pay $40 for a match card where you know every winner.. And the match ends with 5 mins..cause one of the competitors hit a finisher.
TubbyTater 6 days ago

AceBobcat 1 week ago 2
Oh, and another one: blaming WWF for ECW failing because they got the idea to be extreme? Wow, bro...your arguement is so lame. So ECW worked solely on schtick, and had no real substance...that's WWF's fault? Vince saw something that worked, and he did it. What the hell is your point? ECW couldn't evolve. Yes, they were innovative, but ECW was DESTINED TO FAIL and it would have happened sooner but Vince was funding them!!! That WWF's fault, too?
FAIL!
DUBtheTIGER 1 week ago
@DUBtheTIGER Teah, but that wasn't the booking of ECW that was the problem. The problem was that Paul Heyman, while a great booker, was a god fucking awful businessman.
AdoublesLdouble 1 week ago
For almost everything you say, there's a disclaimer that "it worked with great performers"...so what you're saying is, these guys today aren't as good as the guys were a decade ago. Yup

ultimos89 1 week ago
I understand what he is saying. He made some valid points,However the attitude era was necessary in order for the wwe to compete with wcw. It may have hurt the company in the long run,But they had to take drastic measures because they were getting their asses kicked in the ratings.
chuc9600 1 week ago

Other than that though I mostly agree with you.

ElijahSGrimes 1 week ago

TakumProti 2 weeks ago

Continued... I couldn't agree more that building the product to the pay per view created so much excitement and anticipation. I love how they would build the characters and how every wrestler was recognizable. Today they all look the same, they all speak the same. WWE really lacks characters which is sad. It was such an exciting thing to tune in Saturday at 12 and watch Superstars when I was a kid. The Golden era really had something though.
izzypop100 2 weeks ago
I've been watching many of your reviews especially on the Big four Pay Per Views. I myself am in agreement that the Attitude era went too far. I'm a huge fan of the golden era!!! I'm 29 years old, grew up with Hogan, Macho, and Warrior. I watched Attitude but I'll be honest it just didn't hook me like the Hogan days. I agree totally, Attitude era just blew a massive load all in one shot and had nothing to give afterwards. Wrestling to me is dead now. I don't watch the current product

I agree with this video, another thing that is hurting wrestling (wwe) is the fact that there are no more interviews with the commentators in the ring.

Even the ruthless aggression era could not get anywhere near the attitude era, and that had some roster

the attitude era isn't to blame for MOST of the garbage we are getting today,I agree with you about wwe having to build stars now rather than plucking them from another company but they built Cena,Batista,Brock,Orton,Jeff, after the attitude era so I think it's still the storylines that are to blame and Rock put over Brock then left,Brock put over Eddie then left Eddie died,HHH put over Benoit,Benoit put over Orton then the Benoit incident,I think wwe would be in better shape if they were alive
Str8talk50 2 months ago
@Str8talk50
Trust me, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero would have retired by now. Both men were well into their 30's when they died. Plus, with Benoit's mental health condition prior to the tragic incident, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Same thing goes for Eddie Guerrero.
