Dr. Dix, while I have not seen the outcome of this video "Doggie Dentistry". May you be blessed a thousand times for what you do for the animals you serve. I hope the outcome was positive. I recently found a Chihuahua dn he had very bad issues with his teeth. The DVM helped me treat the dog's problems and he's living well with us. He was found on the road side and appears to be 9-12yrs of age and was in bad condition. It is goo to know there are DVM's willing to help animals and people. TY
@myhgojr Actually, she was never really owned nor had a home. She was bouncing around from shelter to rescue group to shelter, etc. Just a bad luck pup!
@diornotwar123 She actually never had a family of her own. She had been bouncing around shelters and rescue groups who didn't have the resources to help her. She had some bad luck there, but don't curse her owners -- they never really existed for her.
The outcome was they ended up having to remove about 2/3rds to 3/4 of her lower jaw from front to back. Dr. Mike even commented that he wasn't sure what he was doing was what was best for her. She recovered and was eating. What a tough decision. This was the only episode I've seen where I second guessed whether or not saving the dog was for the best. I hope she adapts and is finally able to live a happy life.
@jblough44 I'm with you. It was actually good to see Dr. Mike thinking it over more than once - it shows he isn't just a knee-jerk kind of vet! It was good to see her playing and eating at the end. I also hope she thrives.
Since I have yet to see the rest of this video, I am going to assume the dog is o.k. why would they go to all the trouble of showing this poor creature?? The owners of this dog need to go for at least one day experiencing the kind of pain that dog was having. We do not live in a society that allows this anymore.
why are everyone talking about natural selection and evolution? the poor dog has a bad infection in her jaw bone, which has nothing to do whatsoever with evolution and natural selection, only poor living conditions and neglect.
@KARIN094 She was bounced around from shelter to rescue group to shelter, etc. But I agree, she wouldn't have been in such bad shape if it was caught even a year earlier.

Why not Dr. DICKS!!?? Dr DICKS finds some shit wrong with the mutant dog and blah blah blah. What's wrong with that?? It's just his name Dr. DICKS tries to help the dog using his DICKALECTOMY process.
I heard most species of dog would die out or interbreed like crazy without people around to care for them s oi figure that natural selection hardly exists in the here and now.
thats true. all the "cute" small dogs would have a less chance of survival without human protection.
The numerous dogs that are now available are made possible through selective breeding, but it doesn't mean people actually made it better for survival imo.
Interestingly, mixed breeds are in the most part better equiped to survive than pure breeds, selective breeding is an art because it goes against nature quest for variety......
Yeah, and if you ever have some sort of infection that becomes somewhat serious... let's just put you down. Some people seem to think that an animal's life is just so insignificant compared to theirs.
What makes a life important? This dog deserves to life without constant pain.
Comemon people.........let evolution take it course!!!!!!!! Did you ever think that maybe you are working against evolution in keeping the "unfit" in the gene pool??? Wasted resources... and the truth is, take it how you will......... it's cheaper to just euthanize them. Sorry....no offense!
An infection is not evolution. Evolution works when GENETIC mutations affect the physical body making individuals better, or worse, adapted to surviving their local environment. The unhelpful mutations result in death, while the helpful ones allow for survival. The physical changes then must be able to pass down to the offspring of these "better survivors". It has nothing to do with changes made by bacterial or viral infections, as these changes are not genetic and cannot be passed down.
you're not wrong just natural selection better explains evolution as you've explained it, by using "surviving their local environments". Selective breeding uses human intervention to work as the selector of good and bad genes and in a sense evolves the animal like nature would otherwise. Although viruses do mutate for example; HIV, so it does evolve. Part of the problem with influenza virus is the mutation of viruses from animal to humans, its directly related to "evolution".
Yeah, I was just trying to explain natural selection, and "micro evolution". I get really upset when people don't understand evolution properly! but I might not be the best at explaining it! lol
You're right too. Two species evolving together (Coevolution), like the human immune system and HIV or predator-prey interaction affect the way they each evolve. This is because other organisms are a part of your local environment.
Selective breeding does sort of "expedite" the evolutionary process. Selective breeding of flowers is how we first began to understand dominant and recessive genes!
But when one individual gets an infected wound, like this poor doggie and probably caused by poor living conditions, it's not that they're not longer genetically fit for the species. If they bred this dog, the puppies would come out normal and healthy. It's not like they would have a hole disintegrated into their jaw bone.
A dog like 'the unbalanced bulldog' has a genetic problem as a result of inbreeding. Best friends have him a nice place to live so that he could have a happy life, but they're not going to allow him to have puppies. They're not keeping the "unfit" in the gene pool, they're just giving dogs a place to be safe and happy. Why do you care how much money it costs their organization?
