I've been working on my stuff since...2006. So, that means I'm about halfway through the 12 years. I haven't made a huge impact out there, and I was starting to wonder why. But, if it's an average of 12 YEARS, then I still have about six more years before I can start wondering about my success! Haha!
@ReasonNLogic It's actually not comparing the company to the individual. What he's doing is providing an example of a high success story. It's just something that he felt would get our attention. You know?
Good video and there are a few talents that are just born with the skills and get some sort of success after just a few years. Some of us get it lose it, get it and lose it again. Maybe I am relating more to income. With art there is also much competition these days. So only advice I can give is work, work and work at it. Network also and never stop learning!
Writer here, but I couldn't help but relate to your video. I am 27 now, and was really at the point of wondering if it was all worth it, and was getting pretty frustrated at the lack of progress in my career.
I like this *so* much. I really identify with "I'm nearly 30 and I've got nothing to show for it! I suck!" D: I'm going to try to watch this whenever I feel down on myself or my work. <3
Soooo... can I count the nearly 10 years I wasted, trying to be an ADULT, before deciding that art is my life and I won't quit until I have it count towards those 12? XD
"Making it" as an artist is harder than anyone could ever imagine or even believe. It's not just about getting famous- it's about doing what feels right rather than what everyone thinks you should do. Thank you so much for this.
@Padawanpuddle Hahaha, exactly. It's about being happy and what you want to do, not fame. Success is all subjective. I was going to make a follow up video where people just "wait" 12 years until it happens, but the point is they have to work those twelve years (on average) to get it all rolling.
@willdraw4food I just got accepted to school- so I am thinking the 12 comes AFTER that... But I'm okay with that. I have already accepted that I'm not going to be "BIG" in the industry, but I WILL make it for myself. I'm in the 20%- believe me!
rule and such are meant to be broken to make it in this industry you have to start by beefing up your drawing skills(even if you do 3d) then you look at what specialty you would like to go in, in other words finding yourself a trade skill; years are not relevant because if you be committed and draw allot then you'll have a very nice portfolio which is pretty much your resume.
I heard about you through VGcats and glad I followed the link. I've been struggling with my fiction writing for a while but this video is really motivational. I'm planning on finishing my first draft of a 300 page novel this month. I will persevere! Thank you.
It's incredible. Perseverance is the time-tested method to success, yet you find the endless masses looking for a shortcut in life. Thank you for this message. It relieves me in knowing that I'm not the only one going through this ordeal.
thank you.

very awesome.
i'm so glad you made this it is very encouraging.
i've been working independently as a comic book artist since 1998 and it's this same state of mind that keeps me going.
i just graduated from college where i learned animation, and now i want to continue my independent pursuits.
I have stories to tell and there are people out there i'm sure want to hear them.
again this has been very encouraging
thank you.
