Moving. This tune was mentioned often in his book. All guitarists have a piece they learn when first starting out that carries through their life with them, this is his. You can be anywhere in the world and you pick up the guitar and take yourself back over the years and lose yourself in the tune, the mood, the memories, the years gone by, the years to come. The teenage boy from Dartford sits in the Beacon Theatre and those around him don't even notice it. I doubt that Keith plays this the sam
The problem with saying it's not Malaguena is that you then have to specify which Malaguena.
In America we're most familiar with the sixth movement of the Suite Andalucia by Ernesto Lecuona. In Mexico it refers to a different song called Malagueña Salerosa.
Generically, it's a flamenco style originating from the fandangos of Malaga, Spain. This piece could be in that style.
The title was also used by Ravel, Shostakovich and Isaac Albéniz.

One of the things that impressed me about Mr. Richards when reading _Life_ was his ability and eagerness to learn from any source. If he wasn't learning how to do something, he was learning now NOT to do it. He had a total openness to experience, and still seems to have it.
Another thing was his drive to collaborate: the list of musicians with whom he's played covers pretty much every area of music except, perhaps, what we consider "classical," and I wouldn't put that past him.
I doubt that he would think this "Malaguena." There were lots of recordings of that in the fifties, and he would know the difference. Think about it: this is someone who was sucking up music like a Hoover, someone who knew, >off-hand,< who wrote songs and lyrics for lots of old standards, and the year they were written. I don't think he'd be confused on something like this.
I was only joking. Unfortunatelly I'm not really good at classic latin tunes. i've always loved this bit on the DVD, especially how he ignores Clinton's visit -as opposed to Mick's excitement! - and when I finished LIFE I mistakenly connected this to La Malaguena, like if this could be the only latin tune Keith would punch in. Obviously not, I remember him saying how much he had learnt from practicing chord sequences in portuguese guitar music...
@andrabian I'm glad you mention Clinton's appearence on the film. Shine a Light disappointed me a lot and one of the reasons was this bit with the Clintons on stage with the Rolling Stones! The Stones were the idols of my youth, we played their songs at our rallies and demonstrations in the 70s. To see Mick Jagger with his pal Bill Clinton now......- unbelievable! It's obvious, commercial success and power change people - and not for the good!
Thanks for changing the title. Now, it's as authentic as the player.
When I first saw this on "Shine a Light," I thought it was enchanting in its own right: an artist playing for his own pleasure amid the chaos of concert prep. He knew the cameras were there, but still, it's almost voyeuristic to watch. In a way, it's more revelatory than his distinctive riffs.
Now, can we find a Richards "Malaguena" someplace?

i love keef...but he barely knows 2 bars of malaguena...he doesn't have the skills for this type of thing..neither does he sound credible as a bluesman to anyone that knows that style..what he does have is unique feel for his brand of rock n roll-i love his playing on so many songs...and im listening to johnny depp reading his autobiography right now(recommended!)..but keef-don't be pretending you have a notion about malafuckinguena-just makes u look like a bullshitter...
@noclass33 I too listened to the book on CD - don't be disappointed when the narrator changes - Johnny Depp does return, and then ultimately Keith himself finishes the read. When you get to the end of the book, you'll understand my comment. :-)
@MudElephant i know..it was when he was meeting the new wench's folks...but honestly i dunno why he pretends he has a clue how to play malaguena..he hasn't a notion!not that paco de lucia could play the ragged rhythm of honky tonk women...but i dont think he claims to..keef-if u r out there,mate-u are great..but pretending u are a heavy duty fighter..or a black bluesman..or a flamenco player...it is just foppery...jus be happy with bein a white geezer with a unique feel for r n r
@noclass33 it's the last line of the book. He plays it for his mother as she is dieing and recalls how she thought it was coming from the radio when he played it as a teenager.
@lorella9969 read the book again...he references his ability to play it plenty times...and he also fancies himself as a bit of a fighter(plenty bodyguards to help out tho)...and says he is a black man with white skin(!)..i love keith and i read the book too-its great...but what he plays has no relation to malaguena...go look at a flamenco master playin it ...if u still can't see the funny side of keith's bluffers version of this piece of music then good luck to u-ignorance is bliss i am told..
i just said it bears no resemblance to malaguena..if it was some anonymous guy playing it nobody would take any notice.. and people would tell him to have a listen to malaguena..i'm not sure if we read the same book though-i detect plenty of self-mythologising in it..not that he needs to of course-that is my point-he is keef for gods sake!he rocks!but...he doesn't play malaguena..it's curious that he goes on about the one thing he is hopeless at!now-let's all get on with our lives!
@lorella99i do admit my life is very sad indeed but we all have our crosses to bear.im sure you are a hugely successful polymath who somehow manages to find time to engage a saddo like me in a pointless feud..i said that keith plays beautifully-but playing flamenco is not his forte.music is subjective-u may like what u wish but dont call it malaguena when it aint!i never said it wasn't beautiful in its own right.if u must spread hostility then be aware of its ripples comin back at ya.peace.
malaguena is a part of an important tradition of the gypsies of spain-when a rock star decides to play a piece from this tradition he will attract more attention than any flamenco player-so he had better be able to play it or else he does that tradition a disservice.as for spreading hostility-u made allusions to my life-no need for that-for all u know i may be contemplating suicide.keith can take honest evenhanded criticism-which it was-i love his playing but calling this malaguena is bullshit.
@lorella9969 you are one of those bogus positive people..u use 'positivity' as a stick to beat others with.u have read things into my comments that are not there.they do say never argue with an idiot as they will drag u to their level and beat u with experience.i will leave u to your blissful ignorance-i merely implore those of you with any sense to check out keith's real guitar playing-it rocks&doesnt rely on mawkish dead mother sentimentality.then check out real flamenco players too.
@lorella9969 oooh!caps!scary lady!i think i have used a sledgehammer to crack an egg...sorry to have upset you.it's funny though..why do some people say 'have a nice life' when they really want to say 'go and fall off a cliff'?kinda proves my point about your false brand of positivity..

@lorella9969 it hasn't eluded me(note-different word to'allude')-i merely suggested u stop hiding behind pitifully weak sarcasm&cliches like'what planet u on?'etc.u talk of fun and pleasure...these are mere shadows of true happiness-which u seem devoid of.i merely agreed with u about how boring it wd b to hear yr life story-and your lack of eloquence speaks volumes in regard to your ignorance-not to mention yr inability to hear the difference between malaguena and a rock star's doodle.
@lorella9969 and i do understand that people can be happy-we all have our ups and downs in life and im not immune to them either.i never said anything negative about yr life-u do seem a little stressed tho...stick on some flamenco and chill out..
