Wow, a character dies tragically trying to protect his friends and all people see is what pigment he happens to have. Beyond being historically an allegory to Dr. King during the canon civil rights movement and a reflection of the later split between Charles and Erik in Angel and Darwin, Darwin needed to be a compelling character in order for his sacrifice to resonate and instill a paralyzing guilt in Alex. Sad that so many people would marginalize him as well as the tact of X-Men as a series.

I think the main reason they killed Darwin was show the threat of Shaw. Also Darwins powers make it almost impossible to kill him. He's not really dead but in another form waiting to adapt to become more human like again.
Course he's not really dead, he appears dead but his essence is actually bonded with Havoks brother Vulcan who is in stasis. When Vulcan gets revived then Darwin can just adapt back into a body from the essence he was reduced to.
The fact is the movie takes place in the 60s anyway.

@BareBandSubscription, To be fair Shaw wasn't really a Nazi only posing as one to find out more about humans, he even admitted in the movie that the Nazi's methods are pathetic and flawed. He's a mutant who thinks his kind should rule so the idea of race to him is moot.
@TheDalinkwent Fair enough, but I still feel that the black character dieing in a story paralleling the relationship of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X and their joined and soon separated fights for civil rights was intentional and meant to draw hatred for Shaw, but has been horribly misconstrued to focus hatred on the writers. It's unsettling to see it played out like that by the media and movie-goers because it was only done for the context of the film, not hatred.
@BareBandSubscription, That's a good point. Not to mention Darwin's powers make it impossible to actually kill him, so he really isn't dead. Like you said the context of this scenes was lost by a knee jerk reaction. I was only bothered by Darwins death because he didn't get a chance toi shine before his "death", it would have been more powerful if he died after proving himself a worthy X-Men. Yet the 2nd movie might give him the chance.
@TheDalinkwent There's no reason he wouldn't return for a sequel, and I hope he does so when he shows up and one of the characters is surprised to see him, he can say, "Hey, I don't die, remember?" I think people need to start thinking before they speak. The most frustrating thing about situations like this is when reason is brought into the argument, the accuser tries to fall back on accusations and nothing more, if only to leave thinking they're justified. I saw nothing wrong about Shaws comments while looking Darwin seeing that the movie takes place during the Civil Rights era, and slavery and Jim Crow are still fresh in people minds. I remember when I watched this movie and realized it was drawing upon that specific era's cultural shift and fight for equality, as well as that particular relationship, and I came to appreciate it as being able to present that moment in history and that struggle in a way that younger audiences could, hopefully, take in. That characterization has always been a great attribute of the X-Men.

And the fact of the matter is, calling a white person a 'pale face' is just the same as a white person calling you any derogatory slurs towards your ethnicity. I admitted a lot of movies have racism, but this one doesn't. Just because a black person dies it's racist? The army guy Shaw blew up before Darwin was white, as was Magneto's mother, so the 'Black Guy dies first' theory doesn't even apply here.

I mean, dragonfly wings/spitting fire, a sonic scream, and rings of energy just looked dumb to me. Adapting to your environment looked cool, however. :)

I hear what your saying about black men in Hollywood or any movie we NEVER make it to the end. If we do, even we as black viewers we're even shocked. Sad to say it's the nature of the beast, I only took solace in this movie is to find out that in the true comic story line he didn't die. He adapted and evolved into and energy and came back to what he was. However, when white viewers see us pointing these points out they become "hostile", the only thing, we can do is ultimately change channels...

Wow, a character dies tragically trying to protect his friends and all people see is what pigment he happens to have. Beyond being historically an allegory to Dr. King during the canon civil rights movement and a reflection of the later split between Charles and Erik in Angel and Darwin, Darwin needed to be a compelling character in order for his sacrifice to resonate and instill a paralyzing guilt in Alex. Sad that so many people would marginalize him as well as the tact of X-Men as a series.

It's unsettling to see it played out like that by the media and movie-goers because it was only done for the context of the film, not hatred.

Like you said the context of this scenes was lost by a knee jerk reaction. I was only bothered by Darwins death because he didn't get a chance toi shine before his "death", it would have been more powerful if he died after proving himself a worthy X-Men. Yet the 2nd movie might give him the chance.

I remember when I watched this movie and realized it was drawing upon that specific era's cultural shift and fight for equality, as well as that particular relationship, and I came to appreciate it as being able to present that moment in history and that struggle in a way that younger audiences could, hopefully, take in. That characterization has always been a great attribute of the X-Men.

That's the problem with your people. If a white guy dies in the movie, nobody notices. If a white guy is dumb in the movie, nobody notices. If a white guy is selling drugs in the movie, nobody notices. If a black guy is doing some of the above, then the whole community starts whining "RACISM". Stereotypes don't come out of nowhere. Screw the race discussion on film 4 a sec. Dozens of exchanges in opinion by many YouTubers with alot of hostility attached to some of them along with nearly 50K hits later. All that's ultimately happened is one hell a hornet's nest has been kicked up over something so stupid. Darwin has some pretty good powers. He was actually named after the guy in history. BTW, Bishop was originally a Filipino mutant. But yeah, black guys die in most films but try watching Wrong Turn 2 and you'll find out that the black dude there survived.

@2965islyfegodfrey The video was edited. Watch the actual movie. Shaw doesn't even LOOK at him when he talks about slaves. It's a shot of Henry/Hank McCoy. The Darwin face shot comes a few statements later.

@2965islyfegodfrey Darwin IS black in the comics, as stated in my previous comment. And the fact of the matter is, calling a white person a 'pale face' is just the same as a white person calling you any derogatory slurs towards your ethnicity. I admitted a lot of movies have racism, but this one doesn't. Just because a black person dies it's racist? The army guy Shaw blew up before Darwin was white, as was Magneto's mother, so the 'Black Guy dies first' theory doesn't even apply here.

Finally, Shaw looking at him when mentioning being enslaved? Shaw, being the bastard he is, was trying to provoke Darwin to his side by bringing up the unfair treatment Black people received for so long. Darwin didn't rise to the bait and proved he was better than Shaw.
I respect your opinions, hence why I've not used any abusive language in these comments. Hollywood CAN be racist, but personally, I don't think this film is part of that.

OK so Darwin's power in comics? He can ADAPT to any situation to survive.
Second point ; it's not HOLLYWOOD that decided to cast a Black actor for the part. In Marvel Comics, Darwin is a Black male. But you can't really claim they decide to make Black people have shit powers, because Storm? Super powerful. Surge? Really powerful. Synch? Probably one of the most powerful mutants of all. There's tons more, they're just the ones off the top of my head. All of a race other than Caucasian.

MrFuckHollywood, I actually agree and disagree with you both at the same time. I actually thought Darwin had the coolest superpowers of all those four kids. I mean, dragonfly wings/spitting fire, a sonic scream, and rings of energy just looked dumb to me. Adapting to your environment looked cool, however. :)
That being said, it did make me even more pissed that the token minority was the only mutant (aside from Shaw) killed off. It was unnecessary and full of unfortunate implications, yes.

I hear what your saying about black men in Hollywood or any movie we NEVER make it to the end. If we do, even we as black viewers we're even shocked. Sad to say it's the nature of the beast, I only took solace in this movie is to find out that in the true comic story line he didn't die. He adapted and evolved into and energy and came back to what he was. However, when white viewers see us pointing these points out they become "hostile", the only thing, we can do is ultimately change channels...
