  • Why do you have to hold the index finger to the thumb next to the pitch antenna?

What would happen if you went wild and let that index finger fly free? LoL

  • Is this a little bearing on her finger? Bea-ring, lol

  • Sounds like a cross between someone humming and a violin. Great sound.

  • @AleaTsukurite wow, that's a really good description o-o

  • @TheRealJuKo :)

  • Looks like a possible display from the 50"s about things of the future.

  • Sounds like someone humming

  • sounds like you force fed a cat dish soap and squeezed it

  • @ThePureawesomness that is just so so wrong in so many more ways.

  • did u see the chairs in the background? wtf! :D

  • Does anyone know how much a good theremin costs?

  • @holzpusher the only good kind of theremin is the Moog theremin. Don't buy a cheap ebay one like i did. (they are only good for screeching noises).

  • @holzpusher 400$ or so :(

  • @TheCharon77

You can also build one... Heard it's alot of cheaper, and shouldn't be that hard if you find blueprints.

  • @holzpusher about 3-400 $

  • Better if she was naked when she was doing this.

  • wtf is that a intrument!!! wtf!!!! i never heard abaut this till now!!! some one explain me how this shit work!! a antena!!! wtf!!!

  • @mellisos2m there are 2 oscillating circuits, both with a frequency too high to be audible. Varyng the frequency of one of them, while mantaining the other stable, produce what is call a beat frequency, wich is in the aubile range and can be amplified. By putting the hand near the antenna, the player modifies the frequency of one of the two circuits, creating the beat frequency that you can hear, the more you modify the frequency, the lower beat frequency (and note) you get.

  • Thanks for the great performance. Arigatou gozaimasu!

  • She is very pretty.

  • I'm not trying to be crude and she is very talented but from this one angle in the video her nipples seam oddly erect and it seemed really weird.

  • there is a theremin university!!!???

  • What if you mastered the theremin but then you lost your arm. That would stink

  • @dwarfflesh How about mastering any instrument?

  • @dwarfflesh NO YOU CAN USE YOUR LEGS DUH! xD

all other instruments need arms though

  • very nice

  • cooool room, man.

  • lol is that a skateboard ball bearing on ur finger? XD that thingy sounds sick ;P

  • Sounded beautiful :')

  • one is pitch the other is volume

  • Very nice!! :-)

  • i don't get it...what is she doing?

  • @lxxjamiexxl Playing an instrument, called a theremin.

On one bar you move your hand closer to make a higher pitch, and farther to make a deeper pitch.

On the other, you move your hand closer to make the sound softer, etc.

  • lol obv u dont know very much about physics or music? XD

  • Obviously you don't know much about electronics or music. The Theramin is an old electronic instrument invented in Russia in the 1920s. It uses a pair of heterodyne oscillators to detect the proximity of the player's hands, as electrical grounds, to the two antennas. It then applies these values to the volume and pitch of the sound produced.

  • damn i want one are these expencive?

  • no i dont think so... okay in contrast to a guitar which you can purchase for 30 euro or somethink like that. but its already available for 300 euro i think...

  • @TheJoe90 Already ?

Thermin is an old instrument from Russia :P

  • The one she plays costs $400 at moogmusic, and it's the least expensive for serious musicians. (There are cheaper ones, but they are basically toys...)

  • you can buy good quality second hand theremins of ebay but before you buy ask for footage of them playing on it so you know that its in tune and working because tuning its a bummer and really hard

  • You can build one. There are kits available, but anyone well versed in electronics could likely make one from scratch.

  • awesome, ive never heard a theramin sound so good

  • Beautiful...

  • Stunning.

  • SWEET!!! I think I'm going to have to pull my theremin out of storage and do something with it! Thank you for that beautiful piece of music!

  • That was great and I also fell in love with this girl!

  • I can't help but wonder why. All you did was see her play a song. We haven't even seen one aspect of her personality... What's to love?

  • Yeah, I agree.

  • ...she DOES have pretty hands...

  • this is awesome!!! the pitching is considered super accurate for theremin!!

  • Freakin' amazing! WOW!

  • wow ^^

  • Amazing! :D

  • wow. what a beautiful performance! i was like this the first time i listened to it ---> OoO

  • Wonderful performance!

    素敵!!

  • That special software you mentioned is exactly how I've been posting here. I don't know how well it'd work for u;pploading but I probably ought to get some use out of my channel at some point.

  • It seems to me, bergen747, that you just answered your own question.

  • I also happen to own a Moog Etherwave. It comes with a DVD, ir in some countries a VHS tape, with some tutorials on how to get started. THey're regrettably not very blind friendly (I'm blind myself), but they're still interesting. Lydia Kavina plays this piece, the first part of it at any rate, in the course of those six lessons.

  • Interesting. May I ask how you read this thread and type the whole thing, being blind? I know there are softwares that help blind people navigate the web.

  • This piece actually sounds quite nice on the Theramin! What a unique and challenging instrument, but it looks like the lady in the video plays it very well.

  • were there many songs in the 60s that featured the theremin? i bet you could do some really psychedelic stuff with that instrument

  • Pink Floyd did

  • The Beach Boys used theremin, most famously in "Good Vibrations".

And although it wasn't from the 60's, another great tune with some theremin is "Velouria" by the Pixies.

  • The Beach Boys used the services of Dr. Paul Tanner, who played a manually-operated audio oscillator, and not an actual theremin.

  • The instrument used by the Beach Boys wasn't a theremin, but it did sound like one. Google "Paul Tanner" for more information.

  • Most notibly, Lothar and the Hand People used one and so did Led Zeppelin.

  • Led Zeppelin used one? which song(s)?

  • "Whole Lotta Love"

    If you Google this pharse:

Led Zepped - Whole lotta love Theremin Solo

you will probably find a video of their performance.

  • Wow, I've never played one, sadly, but I bet the theremin has to be a BITCH to play. And this is just ... near perfect. Definitely great skill and control.

  • I've tried one, not too hard to learn but really hard to actually get accurate notes. I really respect those who can play this instrument professionally.

  • out of all the theremin performances i've heard on YouTube, this has, by far, the best intonation. Virtuoso-worthy.

  • Remarkable. Bizarre but impressive.

The more I see of theremins the more I want one! lol.

  • the theremin is the instrument of a future that never was...

  • @javierenchina

    and the past!

    (the Beatles used it XD)

  • @javierenchina agree~ T_T

  • @javierenchina It's crazy to think that it wasn't intended to be a musical instrument.

  • @javierenchina fuck it, I'm bringing it back, to the future.

  • Instrument of the future? You know this has been around since the 1910's, right?

  • That sounds about right.

  • yea IT WAS "THE INSTRUMENT OF THE FUTURE" when it was created they hoped that people would buy it and master it because apparently its easier to master

  • I want to learn how to play this thing. It's the instrument of the future. Soon, everything will be controlled with our minds and buttons will be obsolete. This baby'll play our new global anthem.

  • This is so fluid! And yet every note is there in such clarity! It sounds amazing :)

  • Oh and Sae sato's skill is very impressive. Bravo.

  • This really does make me want to learn some church music to the theremin.

  • That's the greatest intonation on a theremin on all of youtube.

  • so sweet sound :D

  • i thougt that to in other musics with this instrument but then i done some research and this is how it realy sounds its a great sound and weird to

  • that's beautiful! graceful and softly flowing GREAT JOB!!!!!

  • What's that? xD

  • a theremin

  • where can i get one of the mini ones in the usa for under $20?

  • try ebay for like $70

  • were doing this exact version in choir! its a great arragement and beautifully done here :)

  • the chairs give the rainbow effect,no?

  • simply amazing!

  • uummm....i believe the term is EPIC WIN

  • complimenti !

    ... standing ovation !!!

  • nice intonation! best i've ever heard! keep it up. one of my favorites of "over the rainbow".

  • sounds awesome! keep up the good work

  • unbelievable, just fantastic.

  • perky

  • This is the best version of 'over the rainbow' i have seen and heard on the theremin! -No doubt :) Also, can someone please tell me where i can get the background music from? I like this particular version. Thanks in advance, JD x

  • which I think is fantastic =)

  • Amazing, at parts it almost sounds like a woodwind.

This actually sounds good instead of funny like most theremin videos that I have seen.

    5/5

  • wow, her intonation is the best ive ever seen with a theremin

  • I'm trying to learn this. It's incredibly fun to play, and this video is great.

  • Very good theremin playing. Very enjoyable. Thanks for posting this.

  • i like the chairs in your studio.

  • Very well done! It seems like it would be tough to get the notes in tune considering your hands are just floating...crazy stuff!

  • Simply magnificent!

That was some of the best music I have ever heard come from the theremin!

Thank you very much for the release of this video! ^_^

  • good video... sounds good, and theremins are hard to get sounding good.

  • well in fairness the theremin was created on accident by some dude trying to design better radios. The circuitry required from electronic oscilation was around before theremins OR synthesizers in the form of radio transmitters, both FM and AM. Theremin or no theremin snythesizers WOULD have happened just as they happened anyway. Typical american caring more about influences than the HERE, the NOW, and the FUTURE. I bet you couldnt name 1 electronic song released in 09 off top of head.

  • was actually trying to create a proximity sensor... i believe was for landmines

  • I am sorry to tell you, that the idea was not to create better radios... ;o)

It was createt in 1916/19 by Thermen. As a physicist and cellist he tried to develop an electric Cello!!!

  • the theremin, to my understanding, is what inspired Bob Moog to create the first analog synthesizer so I wouldn't say that the theremin didn't play its role in the development of electronic music... typical person, trying to categorize the human species

  • Theremin was working on a device to measure the density of gasses under pressure in 1918 when he noticed that the proximity of his body affected the apparatus in such a way that he could produce a varying pitch tone. Edwin Armstrong received his patent on wideband FM in 1933, which was substantially later than the emergence of the theremin. However, Armstrong's earlier invention of 1914, the "Armstrong oscillator," was used by Theremin in his designs. (U.S. Patent 1113149)

  • @madamerotten thats pretty interesting are they still built the same way?

  • A majority of modern theremins still use the principles established by Leon Theremin, namely, the "heterodyning" of two radio-frequency oscillators. Theremin used the Armstrong oscillator, but these days, the "Colpitts" oscillator is more common, owing to its relative simplicity. Other radio-frequency methods not involving heterodyning include phase detection, reflectivity, and pulse RADAR. There are optical methods, as well. The physics of theremins relate to Maxwell's equations.

  • WOW! I just got a Theremin and "Over the Rainbow" is on my list to learn.

  • 2:06 those are some fucking awesome chairs i have to say

  • lol yeah, japan pride...

how the fuck did i get to this videao lol

  • you sir have no clue what you are talking about. This instrument lead to the invention of electronic instruments. Also half of the special effects for scifi movies would not have been created without this "thing" as you call it.

  • oh would u shut up someone would have probably come up with something waaaaaayyy better in later years .....although i do admire the freakiness of that "thing"

  • sweeeeet : >

  • GRAMMAR...NOT GRAMMER This is not ignorance, this is lack of education.

  • indeed sir....lol

  • good job but wtf is with the furniture in the room? its like a modern art museum

  • Wow, that was amazing :D !!!

  • You are incorrect, perhaps look up the word ignorant, you'll notice it never mentions ignoring anything. While the the words are similar, they were coined almost 500 years apart and while may explain similar types of people they are not the same by a long shot.

  • black people....nice....

went from being a grammer nerd to a racist grammer nerd

  • you sir have won the internet

  • wow this disscussion is a bit ridiculous, isnt it?

  • How can such ignorant people exist...who never heard of a theremin? The best piece of theremin playing on You Tube is Clara Rockmore playing Liebestraum and Clair De Lune.

  • I don't see how not being aware of a very obscure instrument would qualify as being ignorant. Not knowing how to add subtract or how to read and write would be ignorant. If I asked you what a form roller, or an ink fountain, was or a hickie picker was, not knowing would not make you ignorant, it would only prove that you didn't know much about offset lithography. I think you'll find that the majority of the worlds population would not have any clue as to what a theremin was.

  • Agreeing with you there, i'd never heard of it.. i found it becasue it poped up on my list of "suggested for you" or whatever it is called becasue i listened to the Zelda theme done on piano. I must say i have really taken to this and am going to buy myself one as soon as i can, beautiful instrument and so very differant.

Can i jsut point out not knowing how to read or write doesn't neccesarly make you ignorant does it? Isn't it more insulting something ect.. without truly knowing about it?

  • That was cool. サエさんすごい綺麗ですね;)

  • Wow awesome! Amazing playing and control!

  • well, I accualy clapped out loud on this one, its just awesome

  • Realy good! bravo!

  • beautiful

  • very accurate such grace

  • very beautiful! i've never heard a theremin sound better!

  • My thoughts exactly..what is a thermin?

  • You wave your hands around like in minority report and the little elf inside plays violin. Its pretty tough because you usually cant get him to play anything beside 'turkey in the straw'.

  • its an instrument invented in the early 1900s that changes pitch depending on how close u put ur hands to it. One hand controls volume, and another controls pitch.

  • quite frankly.

  • Beautiful! Great playing! I love the articulation, wish I could do it! By the way, nice chairs...very abstract :)

  • Beautiful! I Love It!

  • Brava!! Loved the music....and the mid century furniture!

  • Only one word, AMAZING...!!!!

  • cool nipples

  • haha aSs =.)

  • yup it is

  • That was awesome! That instrument definatly takes patience and skill, and you pulled it off perfectly!

  • Love

  • that was really beautiful! u make it look easy! btw i love the furniture! where ya get it?

  • how dare you criticize beautiful music like this. you sick person. i have absolutely no respect whatsoever for you. may god have mercy on your soul.

  • you go girl

  • It's a guy.

  • If it's a guy, why is it wearing a wig, stuffing a bra, wearing high heels and a dress?

  • As amazing as the theremin playing is, I am impressed most that you both got the title right (no "somewhere"), and that you found the original and beautiful opening ("when all the world...") to this classic song, which was never used in the Wizard of Oz. A rare find, and a lovely version of it!

  • almost made me cry....

  • that's the best tone i've ever heard. perfect pitch. this is one of the most amazing music videos i've ever seen.

  • beautiful

  • that furniture is crazay!!!
