Not neccessarily, you can chant anytime and its free, what they depicted in the movie was her buddhist altar, the box is called a butsudan, and the altar accessories are candles to lit the mandala or gohonzon, incense is usually used, along with greens, fresh water in the morning,maybe a little bowl of rice, these were all considered offerings, many of us now just use some sort of light since we have electicitiy...if u start chanting, the answers will come...
