  • Coffee or tea seem like the worst thing you can drink in those conditions. They're both dehydrates. The caffeine in both will make you piss, dehydrating you. Why not bring beef or chicken bullion cubes with you instead for the nutritional value, as well as water retention?

  • @Dem0D1ck You are absolutely right about caffeine...I agree with you...But in this case I am out just to enjoy my self (no survival situation) out there to have fun and coffee is my choice of drink....thanks for watching.

  • @bushcraftbartons Sorry, didn't realize you were just out for a day in the woods. I do enjoy your videos, very informative.

  • Oh, and smoke gets drawn to you exactly like an eddy in a stream except that it is the wind circling back instead of water.

  • Things do taste better, but things to me also seem funnier, sounds more distinct, vision a bit more crisp. My theory is that in the bush we are not surrounded with unnatural geometry (squares, triangles, circles) and other distractions (background noises, hustle and bustle) which allows for our senses to be more accutely focused on the matter at hand. Funny, my wife and I talk about it all the time in the bush, hehe.

  • thanks for all the information, keep up the work

  • @cekinxxx welcome...

  • Answer: The reason the SMOKE follows you no matter where you sit, is because you are a heat source, and as you know heat rises, so as heat is rising off your body, the smoke is drawn to that path of least resistance, and rises and follows along the same path as your body heat source rising. Science is a wonderful thing. That of course is if, there is no wind.

  • Staying hydrated is very important during the winter, as it also helps keep your warm, and also in high altitudes it will help avoid altitude sickness. Keep your feet warm by wearing a Hat on your head. Where most of your body heat escapes.

  • @TiM9FG Thanks

  • Very cool video Mike, loved it, but I love all of your video's....:-) Nice how relaxed you were

    Take care

    Groetjes

  • @patje0109 Thank you very much my friend...

  • That's some good info for those people out there that don't know these things Mike, thanks for sharing. As for the smoke always following someone....you got me there, I've often wondered that myself....LOL. Take Care my friend :-))

  • Loved the video Mike. Thanks for sharing your insight. You are a respected bushcrafter and outdoorsman in this community, and personally, I eat up every word you have to share. Thanks for bringing the cool environment with you = ) Love to Josie. ~Wolf

  • @FatDaddy4Fun Thank you very much Wolf...really appreciate your support and kind words. Thank You.

  • great video, not boring for a second, its even better withouth so much editing=) loved it, good info on hidration and an interesting point on the smoke following u anywhere u sit, its just funny bcause i camplain about the same thing every time =D please make more winter videos, its my favorite time of year! perhaps a video on how to cover your tracks, or how to prevent the smoke of the fire to show the location of your camp, how to stay"hidden" in the forrest where all the leaves are gone?

  • @shamanspirit1984 Thanks...appreciate your comment..

  • and i think the reason the smoke follows you is because your body creates some sort of break in the wind and heat currents from the fire meaning the smoke comes to you i may be wrong but im sure i heard it somewhere

    mike

  • @strat2206 Your answer is actually the right one :) Good..

  • nice vid mike you said about the moisture coming out of your mouth being from your lungs being moist but its also because if the air is dry (usually when its cold) means your body has to add moisture to it furthermore you should never hold your bladder when its cold because your body has to use energy keeping the liquid warm meaning it makes you cold. and i think food could taste better because we still have the same minds as our ancestors and like being in the wilderness , all the best

    Mike

  • never boring! Keep it up. Have you ever thought about including Josie more often? She is always in the background. Could she comment more often.

  • "In the potatoes" What's the origin of that expression?

  • @bodgerdavesumner Its actually a french expression meaning that I could be wrong :) Thanks...

  • great vid mike

  • @robertmccallum1 Thanks Robert...

  • You should relax during all your videos. It helps me relax to watch them. Thank you.

  • @deserthunter73 Thanks :)

  • mike been looking all over my area cant find and chaga are u willing to sell me a big chunk ?

  • Good video Mike. I think smoke follows us cause we are a wind break so to speak therefore acting as a bit of a vacuum from time to time. If your posting older vids I'd like to see you squirrel snaring vid if you have it.

    happy New Year

    Nate

  • @CdnLifeguard71 Thanks Nate...Your answer is correct. Concerning the squirrel vid that is one I cant find :( Maybe I will have to reproduce it someday. Too many people asking for it. Happy New Year to you as well..

  • ***** Smoky-Bartons *****

did anybody answered your question of " why is the smoke always hunting me ? " If not - I have a theory: Your body close to the fire works like a rock in the surf ... it causes swirls. And just like the water, the smoke tries to flow around this "Mike Mountain" ... and unfortunately depends on you ! Certainly it`s a stupid thing - but it`s also a physical law ! ;o) ( good, ey ? ) Yo buddy, nice to see ya in the snow - actual i would sit deeply in mud with my ass !

  • @moorcamper Thanks JAN BOY :) Your answer is pretty close....I think I will have to update this vid....Thanks for your comment eh!!! :))))

  • Thanks Professor Mike. I was actually shouting the answers out as if you could here me. Ha. Should have dunked that cookie in your coffee to soften it. So how did you like your new canteen cup? Sure seemed like you were missing your kettle...Dash

  • @mrriprock2 I dont know why I did not think of dipping that cookie! ah!! missed something good there :) Your read my thoughts...I was missing my kettle :) Quite a bit actually :) Thanks Dash...

  • Great video. I think trail food tastes beter because you've worked for it. Good tip about the Birch bark. That stuff goes up quick.

  • @phillipriley welcome...thanks

  • i believe that things taste better because of the physiological effect of satisfaction from doing more for yourself.

  • Oh Yah forgot to ask ...How about a rabbit snaring vid ;-)

  • @brutallindigo Hello Luc....I will think about that one....time is against me :(

  • :-) Always great vid

    -Luc

  • I think that's when I joined you, just after you'd lost that stack of videos. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your films ever since. Stay warm out there and many blessings upon you and your loved ones in the new year:)

  • @ChristLikeness100 Thank you Jen....appreciate it...

  • I was wondering where did you get the containers you used for your coffee and creamer? I like those allot. As far as your question on why everything just tastes better when your out in the woods, I just think that everything is just pure, specially during the winter. like the snow you used to make your coffee It was fresh the only things that had touched that snow, is maybe a couple animals.

  • @TheSonofthunder7 Got my containers at walmart....

  • o man i love the way u do ur vid. cookie tea just relaxing in the woods.........same as i love to do. karen (again) lol

  • @cougarbahia Thank you Karen :)

  • what a nice calming video. i enjoyed it very much ty. i go out in the woods make tea a lot with my dog thx karen

  • Always a nice time when you stop by to "visit" My woman loves your videos as well.

Have you done the fire tinder ones where you can carry a hot coal to start a fire? I hope I am explaining this properly? Tinder fungus?

  • @CTOL1 Hello Bro....Thanks...Yes I made 2 or 3 more not long ago...there on my channel somewhere..

  • Happy New Year eh :o)

  • @Ggreenvideos Happy Happy New Year eh Rich :)

  • If you fill the pot rite up with snow the water in the bottom can evaporate before all the snow is melted. Burning the bottom of the pot. I see alot of people just stuffing the pot with snow and packing it in...hehe ;o) Personally I find it best to slowly keep adding snow to the pot as it melts into water. Nice little sit down my friend. Glad to see you with snow :o) The boys in Nova Scotia and Ontario want snow real bad. I think you should send it to them since I'm too far away...haha ;o)

  • @Ggreenvideos That is so true concerning the burning of the pot...good point...and for the snow I will be a bit greedy and keep to myself :) Its melting away again :(

  • Yup smoke follow you because when you sit in front of a fire it creates a low pressure spot so the smoke gets sucked into it.

  • just a little note to say thanks for your videos, the reason food tasts better in the woods is we are more relaxed and the reason smoke fallows you is do to air flow ,you are makeing a dead air space and funnel it like a stove pipe and then it draw upward in your face. now i have a tip for you, the frozen cookie i carry mine on the in side of my pack next to my back stays warm(not frozen).please keep up the great work and have a great new year

  • @MrBackwoodman Thanks for the great info....appreciate it.

  • Just dont use yellow snow ... thats real bad ;)

  • That's some good advice about the snow balls compression. Thank you

  • @TheMaximumLikelihood Welcome...

  • great video, with some good advice, I look forward to seeing more, and a Happy New Year, hope it's a safe one ...

  • @oldguy537 Same to you...thank you...

  • When I was small frozen yogurt came out they named it frogurt, maybe you could start the frookie company (as a sideline obviously)

  • My guess would be less pollution of scent as well

  • Nice one Mike, great video, and i wish you a happy new year and everything you want!

  • @patmaz1 Thank you my friend...same to you....Happy NY.

  • Great point about hydrating in the winter. I'm guilty of not drinking enough when it is cold.

What kind of trousers are you wearing? They look super comfortable with lots of room to move about. I'm curious about the boots too.

  • @BonnieBlue2A Thanks...for the trousers and boots...got those once upon a time at walmart....the pants are winter cargo pants thicker than normal. Tags are gone :( Sorry I cant tell you the brand.

  • I watched the whole video... damn. Time went so fast :)

  • @fufelis94 Thanks :)

  • Thanks for sharing your coffee with us , i enjoyed it!.Gotta love the smoke ./ Merci de partager ton cafe avec nous , c'etais le fun! Vive la boucane .

  • @vener6 Ca me fais plaisir :)

  • am i the only person immature enough to giggle at "im at about an inch now" ?? hey man its cold, we all know how it is ;)

  • @91JBomb xD

  • Good information here Mike. Thanks.

  • @phreshayr Thanks Brother...

  • Given the fact that I've been a Sub to your channel for about six months I look forward to you reposting those videos, I wouldn't be able to request since I don't know what you had before. Thanks, I truly enjoy them and have saved some of them... Happy new year Mike and Josi.

  • @LV2daHilt Thank you very much...Same to you and Family...

  • thanks mike.

Have a great new year ;)

    kind regards

    SA

  • @jkd185 Same to you SA.....Happy NY....

  • 90% of the time ppl mistake thirst for hunger. if you feel hungry you should drink a glass of water then if you are still hungry then eat something. the water is need before you eat anyhow to help prep your digestive system for the food. majority of ppl over weight for this reason. in winter many ppl fail to realise they are sweating and losing water & lots of moisture from just breathing. i tell my wife i chew with my mouth open b/c the O2 makes it taste better lol. happy new years.

  • @FixedByDoc Great info Doc...

  • Frozen cookie is not good! LOL!!!

  • I WANT COOKIE! >=(

  • I've thought the same thing myself many, many times. I believe the reason the smoke follows you is because your body releases heat upward and creates a column of air, a natural draft for the smoke to follow. Kind of like the flue in a chimney. If that's not the reason then oh well. LOL! I'm no scientist either.

  • @MiWilderness That is what we think. Our bodies produce a lot of heat even all covered up in the winter.

  • I turned down the heat and enjoyed the fellowship around the fire. I had a hot dog with you and it tasted better too. Sorry about the video loss, very frustrating but thanks for what you have and will replenish. That smoke just loves our warm bodies as it cools, I think. Thanks for the tip but I have trouble touching my pinky to my thumb now (fat hands). LoL. Thanks again and enjoy your Feb. See you and Josie in the woods soon I hope. Have a Blessed New Year. JJD

  • @USMC65UH34D Well appreciate your company :) That was alot of fun :)

  • You know, Mike, when we come to your channel, it's to relax anyway.

Your questions made me laugh in a good way, especially the second. So why does food taste better in the woods? I think it's a combination of these parameters : fresh air, workout, well being and lack of offer. And for smoke : ARG! I have no clue. But there are two possibilities : by our presence we create a small vortex-effect, or it's really a manifestation of the devil. I would opt for the first!

  • @fl260 :) Thank You...

  • I laughed so at your question. but i have no answer. where do you live in canada? cause i remember when i was oversea last time it was about -20°C (saskatchewan central) and i wasnt into beign in the woods that much. take care and happy new year

  • @P4pst99 Yes...Canada....Thank you....

  • The best way to tell if you are dhydrating is your urine should be clear. This works summer and winter. Staying hydrated will also help prevent hypotherima and frostbite as the blood becomes thicker. But still look at your urine to tell you yor degree of hydration.

  • Happy New Year to you and Josie Bummer about the lost vids..i feel very fortunate to have seen them all.

  • @HillbillysNdaBush Happy NY my friend....

  • Hey brother, from the "southern friend"...i came to the same conclusion as you did...... more oxygen. If you are wrong then so am i..but 1 thing is right..its not in our head its a real thing. As far as the smoke following you.... i have heard that heat from your body causes a thermal updraft thus creating a void that the smoke fills..if it is windy....and your back is to the wind it creates a vortex and pulls the smoke toward you...... but my mother always said smoke follows beauty....lol

  • Oh yeah, Mike...

    You're right...

    It was so boring...

Where is part two ;-) ?

  • @realgoshawk :)

  • Mike thanks for another great video. Really looking forward to seeing some of the old ones. Happy New Year to you and Josie

    Eric

  • @Ericidryfly Thank you Eric...Happy NY to you and Family as well...

  • Forgot to mention Happy New Year to you all, may al your wishes come true. Love your vids..big thumps up !

  • For the canteencup there are metal covers, plastic covers do melt near a fire. I have a anodized-aluminium cover for the canteen cup, works great, there is also a canteenclip so you can use it as a pot above the fire.

  • Doing any activity outdoors makes you hungry, esspecially in colder days, if you are hungry all food taste more intense. The smoke following you has to do with air dynamics, your body creates a "dead" wind spot, which attracks the warm air of the fire, so also the smoke. (less airresistance).

  • Very good video Brother. Thanks for sharing.

  • @allenh60 Thank you...

  • I remember the old video. What a mess to lost all your videos. However - good video! Thanks. Take care, Benedikt

  • Thanks for the video.

There is no comparison between drinking a cup of coffee inside with 20°C, or outside with -10°C ;)

A good reason why everything tastes better in the wild : when you're out, you're happy and forget about the usual stress, you just appreciate the thinks like they are, you're really concentrated on the thinks you do, and you feel everything stronger. That's what I believe.

Have fun and a happy new year to you and your family.

  • @GobletMartin Happy NY to you as well...thanks..

  • what a wonderfully relaxed video, good advice though here in the SE UK we just have it for the most part wet during winter, our cold is very damp not as dry and the Canadian cold

  • @mazadan Thank you very much...

  • @WinterWoodlands Logical answer...thanks

  • I don't know why smoke always follows you, but that's why it's good to have somebody else there, then it only follows you half as much.

  • @wtinnen :)

  • Eveything tastes better in the woods because there is a greater appreciation of everything in general,.... when in the woods.

  • @TheMojavegreen1 Good answer...

  • All elderly Romanian ladies use your oxygen-trick to coold down their tea, I've never thought about that in the bush.

  • I like your videos a lot, very down to earth. Would you mind doing a video on the guns you use? That is, if you do carry a gun in the woods. I live in Argentina and I would never go in the bush (which is quite different from your woods) without a gun. Too many boars and feral hogs also a lot of cimarron dogs and the odd puma. Keep on the good work

  • @RobertoDonatti Sounds fun, and you don't have to worry about food. ;-)

  • @RobertoDonatti Thanks....we have also a lot of dangerous animals....bears, mountain lions wolves ect to watch out for. The only time I bring a weapon out is when I am hunting. Prevention when your out there is a good thing. But having a choice I would always be armed. Thank you...

  • I prefer snow to ice. Here in Sweden we have alot of humus in the water so the snow is cleaner (exept polution like you mentioned) also (although not really a likely problem) acid will acumulate in lakes and I might acidentally melt acid ice.

How do you think putting som brought in water to cover the snow? or starting by melting a litle snow and adding slowly so it's allways saturated with water?

  • @aru05001 Yes having water to start with is certainly the best thing to do. Then add the snow to preserve water that is already with you.

  • Why smoke follows you? I think the answer to this is in one of your earlier videos.

You mentioned that heat reflector serves two purposes: reflects heat to your shelter and helps with smoke not coming into your shelter.

I think it has a lot to do with air flow when there is a barrier at the fire. In situation when you sit by the fire you are like the heat reflector or that barrier in some way attracting the smoke.

  • @myactionhobbies You are certainly right...Good thought and answer.

  • @myactionhobbies Good answer!

  • on melting snow vs melting ice. Fresh snow has far less change of pollutants vs ice.

  • Great video as always......Why does smoke always seem to get into your face? Fire takes in air from all sides. When you sit in front of the fire, the flames suck in the air between you and it. This leaves a vacuum. The smoke will quickly fill this vacuum, therefore getting smoke in your eyes..Build your fire near something larger than you as a dirt pile, rocks or a wall. The larger object should create a greater vacuum, drawing the smoke towards it, not you. Keep up your great videos!!!!

  • @1620416204 Great answer PPS...Thank you very much....

  • @WinterWoodlands

I agree. Anticipation and exercise (hiking, keeping warm in cold weather, etc) make for tasty meals!

  • @chaulsin exactly, i think it has to do more on the reward of a meal or coffee rather than air...it is just the accomplishment of having a meal out in the open, being able to endure...it is rewarding, rather than just opening a refrigerator and sticking it in the microwave...

  • Smoke follows you because of the magnetic field

  • i think the answer for smoke question is - your heat..

  • what was the thing called you ran your knife accross to make that fire spark ?

  • @GoodWhispers Ferrocium rod (Firesteel)

  • Again a very interesting and informative video, Mike

Yea.. in the winter time we should drink a lot.

But never take the yellow snow. very important :-D haha

Again, a very relaxed and entertaining video, my friend.

I wish you and your family a happy new year.

    Stay Healthy.

    Greetings Tito

  • @Naturliebe Thank you very much Tito....

  • I read the title and i almost wanted to skip this video but i decided to watch it and i'm glad i did... a lot of good points you covered :-)

Speaking of hypothermia i think i suffered from it like 1000 times as a kid, playing in snow all day. I remember not being able to put my thumb and pinkie together and that pretty much happened on daily basis...a few times lol

    - No idea why smoke follows you - happens to me too

    - I love this camera 1080 is amazing

  • @mickeynatasa Thank you....

  • I agree with most of your video, Hydration is really important, in all weather conditions, melting snowballs is a great idea too. One thing. if you have any water in the canteen, add it to the container, then put additional snow on it, to melt quicker. The one thing, that I'm totally against, Caffeine is a diuretic and will increase your urinary output, causing your symptoms to worsen, warm water is fine.

  • @OfficerLarryNMSE Yes in a survival situation you are right....coffee is a no go...

  • Good to see you just chilling out that's what i like about going into the woods sitting back have a cup of coffee and just watching nature all around me.

    Thanks

    Dave

  • @davidfriars You are welcome Dave....thank you...

  • Very good my friend, as usual, great infos, good with the pressed snow. Your videos are always entertaining and cool, Mike. ...interesting thought with the oxigen, ...yes, this makes sence, smell is important for taste ; ) ...I thought it´s the efford and the real need and hard work for it. But if I have guests in the camp, they had not so much to do, ...they also say everything tastes better ; ) so I agree. Very good, often see in a tea ceremony! Great stuff! Happy Day, Sepp

  • @Waldhandwerk Smell is important for taste....Very well said Sepp....Thank you for your comment my friend :)

  • i think that things taste better in the woods because we actually take our time to enjoy it.. sometimes im in such a hurry that i cant even enjoy the food or taste it.

  • @christianmetalpwns Good one...

  • To make the smoke rise, just chant "Dead bunnies, dead bunnies, dead bunnies...." at it and eventually it will go upwards.

  • Wow. The snow is fluffy and gorgeous this time of year.

  • my grandfather always said smoke follows beauty ;)

  • @beast12101 :)))

  • Smoke likes you....at you have a friend

  • Nice video

  • @jmmurdy Thanks....

  • I can name so many videos that you should let us see again. 1) Grouse / Partridge cooking.

    2) Squirrel trapping and cooking. 3) Small fishing kit. 4) Cotton balls making. You have made so many great videos that are very useful. I appreciate you sharing them. Cheers.

  • @mtnsnow11 Thank you very much for your support...appreciate it...

  • Dude, I love the mittens! Beautiful footage! Keep up the inspiring videos

  • @simplymy2sense Thank you...

  • not boring at all, infect and improvement in my view then old videos:)

  • @Prowler1 Thanks...

  • Hi Mike, Nothing like coffee over an open fire but you me going for a while. For some reason the fried snow just wasn't wetting my appetite... : o)

Great topic about staying properly hydrated. Your right on about the causes and effects and I would guess that the air you were breathing was much drier than during the warmer months.

Thanks for the wonderful time, when your relaxing, I'm relaxing..

Smoke always follows beauty Mike, it's true.. : )

  • @saradreaming Thank you very much Sara...Appreciate your comment...

  • Great video not boring at all. Mike are those deer skin mitts ?

  • @medicjimr Thanks Jim.....I dont really know :) Got the mits in walmart for 8 bucks...figure I would get cheap ones because I always seem to burn them by the fire :(

  • i can barely touch my pinky and thumb as it is, let alone in the cold of winter.

  • Smoke gets in your eyes. I'm not a myth buster but I believe that smoke gets in your eyes I call it a "Negative Vortex". 1st is the wind is just blowing in your face. 2nd the Negative Vortex thing is when your back is to the wind. The wind has to curl around you, that's when the smoke will be sucked back to you.

  • @pedalpusher101 That is a right answer....it creates a vacuum effect.

  • Dang, I thought swiped your cookies... looks like I missed one ;-)

  • @oregonmikes You could`ve had em Mike :) No problems....

  • Do you use instant coffee or regular coffee?

  • @buckarue100 Instant...

  • Great video! what pack is that?
