@live1234561 The cadavers are prepared for autopsy by draining all the blood and pumping some formaldehyde through the circulation before dissection.

Also, because the formaldehyde is preserving the body, it's not decomposing... so it doesn't really smell. Just a very strong smell of formaldehyde.

The hat, and wearing it during the procedure, was first taken up by anatomists to show their indifference to social norms. This was a period where the idea of dissecting humans was a massive social no no. Von Hagens (in the video) wears the hat because his procedures of preservation have been equally criticised, despite him using them to educate the public. Same argument, different era.
