This is a wonderfully entertaining video; loved the movie with one of my all-time favorite funny guys, who recently has been wowing-the-world with his Bluegrass music banjo artistry, both Traditional with the legendary Earl Scruggs, and now with his own band, Steve Martin & Steep Canyon.
A little too revealing for youngsters to be beholding. I don't think the lady should have that much showing in the presence of such young eyes and hearts. Just my opinion. Otherwise, the choreography is fun.
At 1 minute 38 seconds I am in the second row, second from the right side of the screen in. At 2 minutes 4 seconds I am the third child they pass as the camera moves across the row. We all learned the dance. Rehearsed for 3 weeks with Danny Daniels. In the "reality" scene at the end, I am in the row on the far right, second row back, wearing glasses.
@SeanParkerRuggier It's mimicing the original TV show from the BBC, where the characters would break into lipsynced old 30's songs. Same with the Christopher Walken song thats on Youtube from this movie.
@SeanParkerRuggier No one in this movie sings, it's all original songs that they lip-sunc to. I think it's because they're escaping through the music, and this way it's even farther from their own life because it's not even them singing. I have uploaded the whole movie on my channel.
@HelenaKoonings As a film historian, I wish to inform you that this movie was about the great depression of 1929. These actors did not escape through the music. Did Jessica Lange escape when she starred in Sweet Dreams or Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner's Daughter? A wise man once said; it's better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt!
@fran9860 It is all very well to be selfproclaimed and righteous, yet it does not give you the right to adress anyone in this manner. I know the movie is about the great depression, but this is how I interpret the movie and these scenes. Is it not true that the musical scenes portray the lightness that the characters themselves do not experience? Therefore, I think it is safe to say that these same scenes are a refuge to them.
if i'm not mistaken, 2 time Daytime Emmy winning actress...Cady MCClain [though if so...would most likely be creditted as Katie Jo McClain], known for her role as Dixie Cooney Martin on All My Children and Rosanna Cabot on As The World Turns...was one of those kids. though can't pick her out, but that's what i read in her bio.
When I pay to see a movie I don't want to see gratuitious violence, boredom or comedies which don't make me laugh. I like to see scenes like this - full of life, music and dance. Interesting to see the principal interrupting the fun and frowning upon the happy kids and teacher celebration of fun. In real life there are people like the principal. You have 2 options - stay away from them or put them on a piano to face the music!.
@mroziuklukas11 you didn't ask me, but it's called..."Pennies From Heaven". though there are two movie versions...this one was made in the early 80s and it stars Bernadette Peters, Steve Martin, and Christopher Walkin.
Interesting - another guy posted the version from the soundtrack lp of this movie, which doesn't seem to be this version of the song - so I also tend to think this one was indeed recorded in 1981. Some of the orchestration does give it away. Still, with the dancing and the synchopated sound of the tapdancing, it's so fabulous! As others have noted, I also find this scene the best part of a very good but painfully depressing movie.
This whole movie is a one-trick pony. It start out stunning, then you get the basic gimmick, and you just wait for it to be over. What's a bit depressing is the huge production values, lots of money spent in pursuit of a small idea.
Now I see this version of Steve Martin is like the oe with Bob Hoskin, The story and plot have nothing to do with the 1930 Bing Crosby Movie. The song Pennies from Heaven is the only thing that is in the three.
I always thought this was a masterful reinterpretation of a 1930s movie musical number. If it was in black and white, it almost could pass for the real thing.
This version of the song was done just for this 1981 movie, but in the final credits an authentic '30s version is heard. Most, if not all, of the other songs that people lip-synched here were original ones.
Right after this clip ends, the principal whacks a little boy on the hand with a ruler and makes him cry, in a cruel contrast.
I really loved this song 'n dance segment in the movie "Pennies From Heaven," (1981) - it was probably the most upbeat part of an otherwise rather depressing movie. Of course, the movie WAS about the Depression times, so, naturally, it couldn't all be fun and games. But I will always love this part of the movie, it was so positive and vibrant. For those of you who haven't seen the movie, I recommend you find a copy and watch it.
This song is the reason I had to have the soundtrack after seeing it on TCM in the wee hours of the morning. Was it ever released on 78 rpm? The vocals are by Ida Sue McCune and through all of my research, the most info I could find on her was a few bit parts in movies such as an animated Casper movie. With a soundtrack so awesome it seems that it would be more readily available, but alas, it is out of print. Luckily, I found a sealed copy of the 2-LP set. $1.25!
Hi can you tell me the name of themovie, and can you get it on DVD,i also have this song on the sound track of the old television programm"Pennies From Heaven" with Bob Hoskins and Gemma Craven,,but i do not know this movie, can you give me some info please, thanks,

This film came out in 1981, which means that these kids are now all in their late 30s. I wonder if any of them went on to any kind of fame and fortune.
Hi IDLERACER, to answer your question if any of these kids went on to fame. Tammy ORourke, the older sister of the late Heather ORourke is in this film. You can see Tammy at 1:01 shes playing the trombone (shes the first girl in front), and dancing in front again at 1:55, and then gives us a big smile on the right front at 2:14 Her sister, Heather was visiting on the set, and was discovered by Steven Speilberg in the commissary and went on to play Carol Anne in all 3 Poltergeist films.
Very underrated movie. People just didn't "get" it. It was supposed to be humorously, darkly ironic; a story of a miserable time (the Depression) punctuated with the elaborate song and dance routines normally found in escapist films of the 30s.
