I really LOVED the movie but I still think that there is a big gaping hole in stead of showing why Esca has this motivation for such extraordinary loyalty to Rome despite what it did to him, his family and his homeland. Why he was loyal to his master was pretty much obvious but towards the end it trancscended beyond this boundry and I wanted to know why. I was waiting for some strong twist in the plot which would put everything in its place but it never came and that was a little disappointing.

@ZhenyaTwo I agree with you. Even just with Marcus, I don't quite see it. Yes, Marcus saved Esca's life, but then admitted it was on a whim and meaningless. Marcus continues to be focused on his goal and would sell out Esca to get there if he didn't need him to survive. In reality, the only time this irrational, unsubstantiated response happens is in sexual and romantic love, but I don't see that either in this movie. There is just no chemistry of any sort between the two men.

@ancidoc1 And did you notice that they never explained why Esca never told Marcus that he knew where to look for the eagle all along? And why for the son of the lord of the 500 spears who despised and hated Romans the wooden sword of freedom would have any value? He considered himself a Brigante not a Roman and Britain was his land and actually north of the wall he could be free? You are right, this attachment between two of them was so irrational and never well-expained.
