What's it matter what his origins are? It's a beautiful song and he sings it beautifully and with deep feeling. Why couldn't his dad have taught him this song? I can remember that song being sung in pubs in the 1960s in my own home city--a Scottish industrial one--by a man who was a Scots Protestant. He probably taught his own kids it. It's a famous song and like all famous songs from almost all cultures we all identify with them. Check Perry Como singing the Kol Nidre, as an example.
@Fingalful George Galloway(maybe because his mother was Irish-Sin Fein) would not approve, neither will the distillers of Chevez Regal who have boycotted Israel.
How times have changed. In these regions there is a tacit boycott of Jewish culture as expressed by UK Universities boycotting Israel. Hopefully this will reverse itself and Jewish culture will be once again open to Celtic ears.
@runpacer The new CD, "Jewish Sou: The Heart & Soul of Jewish Music' features this song, also Jewish songs by Johnny Mathis, Jackie Wilson, Connie Francis, Jay & The Americans, Andy Williams, Eartha Kitt and Many more.

@drmarvin613 Tom Jones isn´t Jewish he is Welsh. His family was mainly of English descent, with both of his paternal grandparents being born in England and his maternal grandmother born in Wales to English parents. His father Thomas Woodward was a coal miner...I think this Rabbi Story is fairytale

I appreciate this song as an Italian American I remember my grandmother singing "Mamma" to me all the time. I love this kind of family oriented affectionate music. Shalom & Arriverderci!
@BigNickey only difference between a jew and an italian, is that jews prefer matzaballs and italians, meatballs.. I remember my bubbe's neighbor in canarsie, brooklyn: his name Guido, he would always invite us in with open arms, not a word of english he spoke but his warm nature and "manja manja" was more then enough to reveal the type of man he was.. RIP Guido and Bubbe (gramma in yiddish)
This is indeed a rare recording. It is taken from the live LP record; Tom Jones, Live at The Talk of The Town. A good old London institution from the 60's & 70's which is sadly no longer there. The LP never made it onto a cd. Parts of it did and is out under the name of Tom Jones; Las Vegas to London. This is a mix of a 1967 appearance at the Flamingo Hotel, Las Vegas (sadly no longer there) and the concert recorded at The Talk of The Town. Nevertheless, another outstanding performance by TJ!
@rockinsilverfox666, I'm totally agree with you.... I like to listen folk music from all around the world, and I have sung some of them, and I'm not neither jewish, nor muslim, nor buddhist, etc. etc., I like hebrew music and middle east sounds, I have learned some arabics songs (phonetic)... Beautiful music doesn't have boundaries nor religion... Charles Aznavour is french from armenian origins, not jewish, and he sings his own version of this song...

This is a live recording in London's Talk of the Town in 1967. Tom had already recorded 3 smash hits (It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat & Green Grass of Home) by the time he made this live album. Hard to find an album where he sounded any better, this is indeed this legendary singer at his very best!

There's plenty of Welsh and other Britons with so-called "dark" phenotypes (ex: Tom Evans, Rowan Atkinson, John Rhys-Davies, Andrea Corr, Gavin Henson, Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton, Colin Farrell, Russell Brand, Kevin Rowland, etc.) Such types have been in the British Isles since ancient times (probably the oldest inhabitants of the place.) The topic of "dark" Britons is a very common one among the old British anthropologists/ethnologists (Beddoe, Thurnam, Phillips, Ripley, etc.)
Such types of Britons predate the Roman conquest (when the Romans arrived to Britain they already noted their presence, and how much they resemble Iberians.) They are probably the oldest inhabitants of the British Isles.
