Take care and bad luck (in purely party political terms).
I am an A-level maths student and I feel that, if maths is easier now, it is not fair to undermine the hard work of those who do perform well in school by constantly highlighting such changes. I have been predicted an A in maths and after hearing what Carol said about the level of maths, I feel as if I have had some value taken away from it (even though it is the highest achievable grade at A-level)
Hi Peckwater4, i can understand that the constant accusations of dumbing down can be irritataing for the students studying hard for exams, it has been going on for years. Unfortunately many of these ccusations are justified and keeping quite about it doesnt do anyone any favours, least of all the students. As higher grades become easier to obtain it becomes that much harder for exceptional students to distinguish themselves and gain university places or jobs.
In part it's easier because we have more practise exam papers, we have access to more resources and better quality teaching that we find exams easier. Also we don't have a quota syastem limiting the % of people that can get A's which is fairer. Those aren't bad things, but I do feel we need t be challenged more. Introducing an A* grade would make us more competative at A Level.Certainly GCSE's were easier that O levels. But universities have at least maintained high challenging standards.
That is a completely illogical claim. As an A is currently the highest grade at A-level, there is no way that I could do better. However, if I were predicted a B, then that would suggest that my mathematical proficiency has an upper limit which has been outlined by my teacher. In that case you may have a valid point. But as I am expected to get the highest grade possible, that comment is invalid and quite foolish.
It's simple really you would have to do a lot more work to get an A if you was studying 20 years ago.
The amount you did to get your A now would have got you a C.
Think of it as it's 25% easier than it was 20 years ago.
Your lucky, although i think employers don't think as highly of A levels as they used to,because of the dumbing down and some schools now use the baccalaureate ,because they have lost faith in A levels.
You cannot make a claim of that nature unless you have directly experienced both periods of A-level. A teacher would be in a position to make such observations and my maths teacher totally disagrees. These arguments are based solely around improved performance. You seem like a bitter person, who's trying to take away value from the hard work of many students. I have no control over the difficulty of A-levels, so all I can do is work hard and get a good grade. So who are you to talk like that?
what is wrong with you? You are making unjustified claims and arguing them like a spoilt toddler. Shall we just skip this stage and move on to the 'I know you are, but what am I?' stage? If you are going to make a vague attempt at an academic argument, then I suggest you acquire some sophistication and communicate properly i.e. because, not "cos". Or are you referring to trigonometry?
Common sense isn't something you're taught in school 'matey', it is something you accumulate from life experience. If you actually took the time to read my post, rather than looking at the 'funny words', you wouldn't have been able to make that comment. This will be my last post on this video as my initial goal was to present a student's view on the matter and not to get into a petty quarrel with a simpleton who isn't even in a position to make the claims on this topic.
Haven't seen him off camera, but there is a massive difference to him on his youtube channel to ridiculous rants in the House of Commons which is just name calling and no policies.
It's just like looking at another Tony Blair: young, vague, gimmicky, and an unpopular government that has almost identical policies.
Although I admit this was the 1st time I've seen him say something substative and risky in stating that exams have definetly got easier.
I struggled with maths in school because a) it didn't appear, in my narrow conception of the world (and bear in mind that a lot of teenagers have that) particularly relevant - in the real world, in history, in philosophy and b) I couldn't find any enjoyment in it. The humanities, arts, and basic sciences are often inextricably linked to people's recreational activities and interests. I can only speak for myself, but I think these are barriers for a lot of people.
Superb. Two brilliant minds talking simple common sense and showing their down to earth sides too. Long may it continue. Our education system ( along with everything else in the UK thanks to Labour ) is in one hell of a mess. Good on you David and Carol.
Good to see the Conservatives trying to do something about maths and the need to enthuse young people. Its a smart move taking Carol Vordeman on board, I'm sure she will work hard with her task force and come up with good recommendations. As a nation we are falling behind and once again its the Conservatives who are adopting a problem solving approach. One wonders how maths literate Gordon Brown is given his recent drunken sailor spending sprees - the figures don't add up!
stand up all of u. climate changing is really happening. saturday it was sunny, sunday it was gloomy and 2day it was snowing. nowadays climate is not settled. 10 years ago, we knew what climate january was gonna have but now it changed. anyway lets face it coz v have done many bad things 2 mother nature & now she is punsihing us back. we deserve it. this world was created 4 peace & life but wild nature of humans turned this heaven into a hell of technology, experiments, inventions & evil things
Great Party, a bit of propaganda, were the fun as well as serious party but i think its allowable considering cameron could probaby do a video smoking cannabis and sleeping with a prostitute and we'd still favour him over gordon brown =]
Look what Brown inherited from the Major government. Brown rode on the back of the Tory boom and spent so much money that we now have a ruined pension system, more people on welfare than ever before, more immigrants than ever before, that pay hardly any tax because they are poor, and we a debt level that is going to take 3 generations to pay off. In the 80s the Tories rescued the economy by restructuring it away from failing industries that we couldn't compete in.
Rubbish. Of course the economy was growing when Brown took over. It was recovering from a recession. But remember how tight Brown had to be in the first two years because the Tories had left such a mess. There is no Tory chancellor who has or could keep the British economy as stable and growing as GB. The tories restructured the economy through their sheer macroeconomic incompetence. They also made us too dependent on the financial sector and see where that's got us. Vote Labour!
The Tories left a Golden Economy in 1997..even Blair said so..and while we're at it..it was a world apart from the horror show that Labour handed to the Tories in 1979..winter of discontent..sick man of Europe..one of the reasons why the Tory Party exists is to clean up the horrific mess left by the previous Labour administration..and it's history repeating itself. Brown is an unelected farce of a PM who is bringing the country to its knees..the sooner he is out the better!!
Is it 'global'? Did it begin in 'America' by any chance? arf arf..you're almost as naive as the plonker who's unfortunately in charge at the moment, the plonker who didn't fix the roof when the sun was shining..yes many other countries are affected but why are we in such a horrific position compared to them? i don't remember it being 'global' or 'due to America' when Brown was boasting years back..he promised the end to boom and bust..he lied and unlike Obama this plonker won't say sorry
Iceland, Ireland and many other countries are in worse situations than us! and speaking of Obama, do you know what the American president said about Mr. Cameron?
What a lightweight! Do not mention Mr Obama when praising Cameron!
Oh I take it all back..Brown slowly destroying the country with his inept economics and useless regulatory system which he himself put in place isn't after a place isn't a problem after all..because ICELAND are worse off!!?? Are you for real? And I wasn't aware you knew Obama personally..i'm absolutely confident therefore you will be able to provide a quote where Obama said that..i would be so embarrassed for you if all you could provide was "sources close to Obama" or "an insider said" ..??
If you want a history lesson, lets go. It was Labour that wanted to give up Britain's empire. The British empire allowed us to dominate the world markets and manufacturing. Then when we have freedom and no empire, Labour and the unions wonder why we can't compete any more. The people Labour wanted to free in India, are now taking our jobs because they can pay slave wages. If anything, the working class need to blame Labour for wasting money on the NHS rather than rebuilding our empire after
...the war. It always amazes me the extent to which Labour, unions and socialists, have a fundamental lack of economic knowledge. Labour always spend too much and they always spend it on people that contribute the least and whom are the least deserving. Good thing for me, I moved to America last year, I won't have to pay for this useless Labour government. I would urge any professional or educated young person to quit Britain and let the dregs pay for themselves.
I can't quite resist commenting on the delicious irony that you've moved to America at the advent of possibly one of the biggest-spending, left-leaning administrations of recent political history. That said, it seems a fitting lesson for someone with that typical non-compassionate conservatism. Embrace the new dialogue: left and right are long gone, and no longer helpful for understanding or crafting governments which work.
I moved here while Bush was still in power, not Obama. I preferred John McCain over Obama, by a mile. Personally I don't buy the Obama mantra that he has ended left-right politics, especially when he is ramming through a spending splurge, stimulus package that got no, I repeat NO support from any Republicans or the right of politics. This is a democratic congress and white house ramming through their big spend agenda, while pretending to build a consensus. Right-left are not gone.
That's a fair point, actually - right-left are only gone for those who let them.
McCain is terrific, but best as a maverick, not a president. I enjoyed his recent challenges to the stimulus plan; JM at his best. In honesty, the spending of the stimulus package makes me nervous (although Pelosi is responsible for the partisan nature of it, to Obama's dismay). The bottom line is that Bush oversaw and facilitated the march to our current economic crisis: the Republicans had their chance, for now.
This is good. Britain needs to be reborn out of the ashes of Labour rule by embracing mathematics, science, technology and engineering in order to have a stake in the future industries that will allow us to remain a great power. This is the land of Newton, Brunell and Darwin, surely we can lead the world again in science and technology. We need to look at countries like Japan and see how they do it.
Even now I bet our elite scientific and maths capacities are better than the Japanese. The Japanese don't do well in manufacturing just because of primary maths education. Anyway, under Labour we've been moving up the economic league table rather than falling down it. Labour have made this country strong. The weak Tories'll just ruin it.
I can't even be bothered to reply now to each comment. I still wish you luck, your really ,really gonna need it. Buy some gold before it's to late, numbnuts ;)
You are joking right? Is this a bit like Orwell's 1984 where war is peace and bankruptcy is strength and debt for future generations is prosperity for the future? You say they have made the country strong, strong for whom? Do you mean people on low incomes that pay hardly any tax or those on welfare, or maybe immigrants, that have take 9 out of every 10 new jobs. No, making Britain strong would be making Britain middle class strong and only the Tories ever do that.
Not joking at all. The economy grew for a decade under Brown. The Tories always screw up the economy: Churchill and the gold standard, Howe's missed monetary targets and Lawson's general incompetence. This recession was caused by Cameron's greedy banker friends. Toady middle class types like you kick hard working immigrants and suck up to rich, posh boys like David Cameron. The right is too weak to govern.
Lol I like Cameron, nice to see that a little bit of snow doesnt stop him getting the work done, but nice to see he can mess around like the rest of us as well!
The "Labour's Debt Crisis" video, though painstakingly done, had the feel of "trying too hard" to impress.
The "Labour's sums don't add up" video felt a bit cheap; the kind of dig we would expect from, say, the John McCain camp.
This one was perfect. It contained a moderate level of (unpredictable, but excusable) fun, and a personal touch. It didn't have a dig at Gordon, but focussed on the Tory solution.
Oh btw, I know you need to throw the snowball in a "politically correct" manner, but come on, throw it like a man! Ok, you can't throw it hard, you are a politician, but if you threw it straight, without an arc in the trajectory, it would be perfect.

I despise David Cameron with an absolute passion.
Why I am watching the video then, you ask? Because every has their own opinion, that' why.

In the 80s the Tories rescued the economy by restructuring it away from failing industries that we couldn't compete in.
britishjohn04 3 years ago
Vote Labour!
tugsandtost 3 years ago
Nurse!!!

YOu cannot blame Mr.Brown for the situation we are in! This is a global depression!
theRod1995 2 years ago
Is it 'global'? Did it begin in 'America' by any chance? arf arf..you're almost as naive as the plonker who's unfortunately in charge at the moment, the plonker who didn't fix the roof when the sun was shining..yes many other countries are affected but why are we in such a horrific position compared to them? i don't remember it being 'global' or 'due to America' when Brown was boasting years back..he promised the end to boom and bust..he lied and unlike Obama this plonker won't say sorry
steps1 2 years ago
Iceland, Ireland and many other countries are in worse situations than us! and speaking of Obama, do you know what the American president said about Mr. Cameron?
What a lightweight! Do not mention Mr Obama when praising Cameron!
theRod1995 2 years ago
Oh I take it all back..Brown slowly destroying the country with his inept economics and useless regulatory system which he himself put in place isn't after a place isn't a problem after all..because ICELAND are worse off!!?? Are you for real? And I wasn't aware you knew Obama personally..i'm absolutely confident therefore you will be able to provide a quote where Obama said that..i would be so embarrassed for you if all you could provide was "sources close to Obama" or "an insider said" ..??
steps1 2 years ago
If you want a history lesson, lets go. It was Labour that wanted to give up Britain's empire. The British empire allowed us to dominate the world markets and manufacturing. Then when we have freedom and no empire, Labour and the unions wonder why we can't compete any more. The people Labour wanted to free in India, are now taking our jobs because they can pay slave wages. If anything, the working class need to blame Labour for wasting money on the NHS rather than rebuilding our empire after
britishjohn04 3 years ago
I would urge any professional or educated young person to quit Britain and let the dregs pay for themselves.
britishjohn04 3 years ago
I can't quite resist commenting on the delicious irony that you've moved to America at the advent of possibly one of the biggest-spending, left-leaning administrations of recent political history. That said, it seems a fitting lesson for someone with that typical non-compassionate conservatism. Embrace the new dialogue: left and right are long gone, and no longer helpful for understanding or crafting governments which work.
youthsnafu 3 years ago
I moved here while Bush was still in power, not Obama. I preferred John McCain over Obama, by a mile. Personally I don't buy the Obama mantra that he has ended left-right politics, especially when he is ramming through a spending splurge, stimulus package that got no, I repeat NO support from any Republicans or the right of politics. This is a democratic congress and white house ramming through their big spend agenda, while pretending to build a consensus. Right-left are not gone.
britishjohn04 3 years ago
That's a fair point, actually - right-left are only gone for those who let them.
McCain is terrific, but best as a maverick, not a president. I enjoyed his recent challenges to the stimulus plan; JM at his best. In honesty, the spending of the stimulus package makes me nervous (although Pelosi is responsible for the partisan nature of it, to Obama's dismay). The bottom line is that Bush oversaw and facilitated the march to our current economic crisis: the Republicans had their chance, for now.
youthsnafu 2 years ago
Dude!! The more i hear about what they are doing in the US the more it sounds just like the Labour party.
They think they can save/control everybody, and there are lots who want to be saved & controlled.
jman375 3 years ago
Then democracy decrees we must give the people what they want.
youthsnafu 2 years ago
This is good. Britain needs to be reborn out of the ashes of Labour rule by embracing mathematics, science, technology and engineering in order to have a stake in the future industries that will allow us to remain a great power. This is the land of Newton, Brunell and Darwin, surely we can lead the world again in science and technology. We need to look at countries like Japan and see how they do it.
britishjohn04 3 years ago 6
and Maxwell the famous scientist on magnetism.
zzxzqwq 3 years ago
Even now I bet our elite scientific and maths capacities are better than the Japanese. The Japanese don't do well in manufacturing just because of primary maths education. Anyway, under Labour we've been moving up the economic league table rather than falling down it. Labour have made this country strong. The weak Tories'll just ruin it.
Take care

jman375 3 years ago

Btw, I am not a Tory supporter. (Yay Respect!)
Now where is my consultancy fee? :-)

Oh btw, I know you need to throw the snowball in a "politically correct" manner, but come on, throw it like a man! Ok, you can't throw it hard, you are a politician, but if you threw it straight, without an arc in the trajectory, it would be perfect.
Sorry ... I just had to say. :-)
