Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei declared that the Dalai Lama - who announced last weekend that he would decide on his reincarnation when he reached 90 - should have no say in his successor.
"The 14th Dalai Lama himself was conferred the title by the government of the Republic of China," Mr Hong said.
Any conferment of the Dalai Lama title without Chinese government approval would be illegal, he said.
"There has never been a case of a previous dalai determining the next dalai," Mr Hong said.

The Dalai Lama, aged 76, who fled to India during a rebellion against China in 1959, said last weekend "no recognition should be given to a candidate chosen for political ends by anyone, including those in the People's Republic of China".

His Holiness the Dalai Lama talks about questioning your Guru. Buddha Shakyamuni encouraged questioning and dissent about Dharma amongst his own followers. Why does His Holiness not allow dissent amongst his fellow Tibetan Buddhist. Buddha Shakyamuni would find this ban to be very sad. I hope H.H. can understand this.

i think it's good to alert the world as to what is going on, and the suffering that DS practitionesr are experiencing, but there has to be some limit to that as well. It is one thing to defend what you believe in and quite another to launch back another offensive onto the other side.

Shugden activists and communist China are working together to undermine the Dalai Lama. Find out about the Buddhist Association of China (controlled by the Chinese Communist Party) and the World Buddhist Forum. China wants a leadersip role in an international Buddhist movement. Since 2006 they´ve expanded their campaign against the Dalai Lama.

This deity, Dorje Shugden is the same nature as Je Tsongkhapa they are the same person performing different functions. Many Dorje Shugden sadhanas state that Dorje Shugden is the embodiment of the Guru, Yidam, and Protector, where Guru refers specifically to Lama Tsongkhapa.
Thus, many cannot accept what Dalai Lama is saying about Dorje Shugden when there are so many evidence pointing to Dorje Shugden's enlightened nature.

The Shugden minority terrorized the other monks, abbots were threatened. There are witnesses. Of cource Shugden practice is sectarian and these Shugden monks tried to enforce their own practice on monks that were not DS practitioners. They were expelled because of their bahaviour.

Tibetans listen to their religious leader, the Dalai Lama. They have complete faith in him.

I don't know much about China so i cannot even begin to comment on how Buddhism is controlled or not within the country. I also don't know the Panchen Lama and cannot comment on that either. What i can comment on is that i don't think all the Buddhists who attended the World Buddhist Forum in China were under Chinese 'control'. that's all.
In 2006 China had it´s first WORLD BUDDHIST FORUM. The Chinese nominated panchen Lama was given international profile. The second World Buddhist Forum was in -09. It was attended by over a thousand religious personages, including heads of different Buddhist sects. The Dalai Lama was excluded both times, 2009 he was labelled as a "disruptive element".
Representatives of Shugden deity worshippers, opposed to the Dalai Lama, was invited.

i think Lama Zopa is very diplomatic. But i also think that he doesn't say things lightly and would have thought about how he presents his information and advice. He would have advised people AGAINST Shugden for stronger reasons than he did if he meant them. Of course, this is conjecture and as i have always said - time will tell. Lama Zopa also said, "Nor does one have to look at the protector as evil. For us ordinary people it is difficult to judge, because we cannot see these lamas minds."

That's right. Lama Zopa's advice book is extremely interesting. In his advice book, Lama Zopa says, "it becomes very important to support His Holiness and to fulfil His Holiness wishes. For that reason, Kopan Monastery stopped doing this practice. This was done for His Holiness. This does not mean that Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche, and His Holiness Zong Rinpoche have made mistakes. It does not mean they are wrong."
However, even though HHDL seem to be suppressing religious Freedom to his own sect - Gelug, Lama Zopa never once said anything negative about HHDL or DS. He never said DS practice is Wrong or Harmful.
Lama Zopa out of respect & love for HHDL and care for his students minds, follows the Ban for now. But he also always mentions this is up most important priority to keep one Guru Samaya and devotion intact. For all we know he is also practicing in silence along with many other high Lamas and patiently awaits tor the Ban to be lifted.

There has been many Tibetan Lamas in the West, few of them were Shugden practitioners. One of the first Lamas was Chögyam Trungpa, he came in the -60´s. Sogyal Rinpoche came in the early -70´s.
If we think about, so what if China supports Dorje Shugden practice - all the better they can collect some merits and hopefully with that, there is an opportunity for their minds to change and be better. WOuldn't that be better for everyone and the future in general.
When ppl's mind are touched by compassion and change, then suffering will be lesser. Perhaps Tibetans in China will hen be treated better and gain their freedom.

And that Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa were instrumental in bringing Buddhism to the west in a big way...and that Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa were/are Dorje Shugden practitioners. (and that once FPMT gave up DS practice, they broke their samaya with Lama Osel, who hasn't returned to take up leadership of the organisation)

There is some very good points and debate on the reason behind the Dalai lama's banned on Dorje Shugden.
@TheRedNiece It also shares information on the practice it self and shows you the lineage masters of this practice which I doubt are ordinary beings, to name a few is HH Gaden Trisur who has himself defected to Shar Gaden monastery. This clearly tells the world that Dorje Shugden practice is not some hocus pocus practice.
It is quite ridiculous to say that there was no ban on Dorje Shugden considering the amount of news coverage, videos, protests, etc on it. (forget what my previous post below says because it was hacked.) I think what redniece and wisdombeing and many here are saying is excellent, it is vital that you the reader not get influenced by one or two people's opinions but on real facts that can be gleaned on the net particular for this shugden website. It has surprisingly non-biased view.
i agree with WISDOMBEING that it's important to do your own research on and investigate this issue.
Read the articles on the many dorjeshugden websites, watch the youtube videos, learn the history of Dorje Shugden, participate on the forum on dorjeshugden - dot-com and understand what is really going on. Then form your own informed decision.
Five years since leaving the cult, and I still haven't been able to put together a modicum of daily practice. I know the NKT does not have ownership over the Dharma, but I find it a lot harder to practice without the support. I find it a lot harder to practice without the benefit of receiving teachings. There is nothing in my area for meditation centers OTHER THAN THE FREAKIN' NKT! They're everywhere, in disguise. All the websites of their local centers are like "meditationin______ dot orrg."
Of course, even if the ban existed--which anyone who's attended HHDL's teachings knows it does not--what would it matter?
The one-and-only "Shugden lama" teaches that HHDL is a "liar and a hypocrite"--then they say "don't attend HHDL's teachings," then finally they make up a story about how "Shugden practitioners are banned from HHDL's teachings."
Sounds like a story made up to keep unwitting western NKT converts from discovering the truth--that there is no ban.
Fair enough - WSS introduced DS to the west at the beginning but since then, many others have learned about DS from other parties, including from websites like dorjeshugden . com and others. Also these youtubes which let me hear n see for myself who says what so that i can get to know BOTH sides of the story (and even then sometimes there is a third side!)... so please don't tar everyone with the same feather. I don't think NKT is dalai lama friendly, is it? I havent noticed if they changed.

i read the Dalai Lama's speech on 10 March Tibetan National Uprising Day. He preaches peace and harmony between Tibetans and Chinese and between Tibetans themselves too. I fully agree with his stance - harmony, communication and understanding will bring peace everywhere - between perceived enemies and perceived friends.
Good news - today, on the 51st Anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day! HH Dalai Lama said:
"It is important that Tibetans maintain friendly relations not only with people of all nationalities, but also amongst themselves. Tibetans should not engage in petty disputes with each other. I earnestly appeal to them instead to resolve any differences with patience and understanding." I sincerely hope that message includes to those who practise Dorje Shugden.

Shugden people can practice as much as they like - in their own monasteries.
It´s not correct to call it ban, because the practice is not prohibited.
What makes these people angry is that they can no longer dominate the Gelug school.
They are a tiny minority now. And the majority of the Gelug lamas have agreed to stop the practice.. It´s not Tsongkhapa´s tradition, these people are followers of Pabongkha, Pabongkha added Shugden less tna a hundred years ago to promote Gelug sectarianism.

If he denies Dorje Shugden from Tibetan Buddhism, then that is his call, since he is the Dalai Lama. I doubt he would disallow them to have the equal rights. I am a Mahayana Buddhist, and I have every respect and faith in the Dalai Lama.

i think it's good to alert the world as to what is going on, and the suffering that DS practitionesr are experiencing, but there has to be some limit to that as well. It is one thing to defend what you believe in and quite another to launch back another offensive onto the other side.
I felt that books like The Great Deception weren't just about alerting the world 2 d situation but about a blatant attack on dalai lama, which is also not in the spirit of Dharma.
There needs to be some balance.

Find out about the Buddhist Association of China (controlled by the Chinese Communist Party) and the World Buddhist Forum. China wants a leadersip role in an international Buddhist movement. Since 2006 they´ve expanded their campaign against the Dalai Lama.

i think if someone was not mentally retard he/she would analyse the religion/faith before believing in it . And more importantly Dogyal practising is not at all a part of Tibetan Buddhism if you had a deeper knowledge about the doctrines of Buddha. So i am sure Tibetans have no fear of people going away from practising Buddhism. It remsembles the rabbit fear of sky falling down.

i think no matter how much we protest, the strength of anything we are trying to defend is reflected in our own action and practice. People will look at our own behaviour, speech and action and question whether this practice is beneficial or not.
Just look at the monks in any monastery. The reason Buddhism has grown so quickly in the world is not bcos anyone protested, or even stood up and openly promoted. It was simply by the practitioners' example that the world was won over

This deity, Dorje Shugden is the same nature as Je Tsongkhapa they are the same person performing different functions. Many Dorje Shugden sadhanas state that Dorje Shugden is the embodiment of the Guru, Yidam, and Protector, where Guru refers specifically to Lama Tsongkhapa.
Thus, many cannot accept what Dalai Lama is saying about Dorje Shugden when there are so many evidence pointing to Dorje Shugden's enlightened nature.

It's really very inspiring to read and the articles are very logical and clear. I would definitely recommend people check out these articles before just believing what people are saying about him being a spirit etc. Learn your facts first.

we can protest and protest and protest but what do we hope to achieve by this ultimately? Although there may be some benefit in raising awareness of the issue, we can't still be protesting the same thing 20 years from now can we?
What else can we do to bring some peace and relief to the very people who are being persecuted? Shouldn't we be even more patient, extend even more kindness and find even more ways to help others during these trying times instead of only protesting on the streets?

Shugden embodies the sectarian belief that other Tibetan lineages should be destroyed. The Shugden´s purpose is well known in both Gelug and non-Gelug schools.
The Dalai Lama has a responsibility to preserve the Buddhist teaching and he is fully supported in his view by the monastic communities.

The Shugden minority terrorized the other monks, abbots were threatened. There are witnesses. Of cource Shugden practice is sectarian and these Shugden monks tried to enforce their own practice on monks that were not DS practitioners. They were expelled because of their bahaviour.

the China-DS link is such a small part of the DorjeShugden issue. The larger picture is that it is a holy practice that has been followed for over 350 years, even before any of these Chinese politics arose.
It is that people are being denied their basic right to practise their religion freely, and that "suddenly" a practice can be wrong. It is not just merely about China spies/ infiltration etc. To go on and on about that is totally missing the point

Buddhist institutions in China/Tibet are controlled by the government and the purpose of the Buddhist Association of China is to place all Buddhists under the leadership of the communist party so that Buddhism will support the party´s agenda.
Shugden groups listen to the Chinese Communist Party, they have financial support from China.
Tibetans listen to their religious leader, the Dalai Lama. They have complete faith in him.

I don't know much about China so i cannot even begin to comment on how Buddhism is controlled or not within the country. I also don't know the Panchen Lama and cannot comment on that either. What i can comment on is that i don't think all the Buddhists who attended the World Buddhist Forum in China were under Chinese 'control'. that's all.

In 2006 China had it´s first WORLD BUDDHIST FORUM. The Chinese nominated panchen Lama was given international profile. The second World Buddhist Forum was in -09. It was attended by over a thousand religious personages, including heads of different Buddhist sects. The Dalai Lama was excluded both times, 2009 he was labelled as a "disruptive element".
Representatives of Shugden deity worshippers, opposed to the Dalai Lama, was invited.
And Shugden groups claim to be non-political....

This is what is most shocking - that a government would do that to its own people. Moreover they are a buddhist nation - is that how they enact their practice and loyalty to their faith?

i think Lama Zopa is very diplomatic. But i also think that he doesn't say things lightly and would have thought about how he presents his information and advice. He would have advised people AGAINST Shugden for stronger reasons than he did if he meant them. Of course, this is conjecture and as i have always said - time will tell. And the time is coming very soon.

That's right. Lama Zopa's advice book is extremely interesting. In his advice book, Lama Zopa says, "it becomes very important to support His Holiness and to fulfil His Holiness wishes. For that reason, Kopan Monastery stopped doing this practice. This was done for His Holiness. This does not mean that Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche, and His Holiness Zong Rinpoche have made mistakes. It does not mean they are wrong."

But he also always mentions this is up most important priority to keep one Guru Samaya and devotion intact. LAMA ZOPA DOES NOT TAKE SHUGDEN PRACTITIONERS AS HIS HIS STUDENTS.
He is not a DS practitioner and he is still with FPMT.
There has been many Tibetan Lamas in the West, few of them were Shugden practitioners. One of the first Lamas was Chögyam Trungpa, he came in the -60´s. Sogyal Rinpoche came in the early -70´s.

If we think about, so what if China supports Dorje Shugden practice - all the better they can collect some merits and hopefully with that, there is an opportunity for their minds to change and be better. WOuldn't that be better for everyone and the future in general.
When ppl's mind are touched by compassion and change, then suffering will be lesser. Perhaps Tibetans in China will hen be treated better and gain their freedom.

Yes the world did not know about Dorje Shugden till WSS made it public. However, the BAN of Dorje Shugden was the one that triggered the cause for a WSS. Basically HHDL, TGIE, WSS and Tibetans people all have a part of it. If you don't want the world to know then stop banning Dorje Shugden. Agree to disagree and let everyone practice what they like happily. Period.

China´s involvement is the problem.
China´s aim is to to destabilize the Tibetan community. Shugden groups have financial support from China.
With the exception of a handful of DS-followers, the Tibetan people have complete faith in the Dalai Lama.

And that Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa were instrumental in bringing Buddhism to the west in a big way...and that Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa were/are Dorje Shugden practitioners. (and that once FPMT gave up DS practice, they broke their samaya with Lama Osel, who hasn't returned to take up leadership of the organisation)

It is quite ridiculous to say that there was no ban on Dorje Shugden considering the amount of news coverage, videos, protests, etc on it. (forget what my previous post below says because it was hacked.) I think what redniece and wisdombeing and many here are saying is excellent, it is vital that you the reader not get influenced by one or two people's opinions but on real facts that can be gleaned on the net particular for this shugden website. It has surprisingly non-biased view.

Five years since leaving the cult, and I still haven't been able to put together a modicum of daily practice. I know the NKT does not have ownership over the Dharma, but I find it a lot harder to practice without the support. I find it a lot harder to practice without the benefit of receiving teachings. There is nothing in my area for meditation centers OTHER THAN THE FREAKIN' NKT! They're everywhere, in disguise. All the websites of their local centers are like "meditationin______ dot orrg."

Of course, even if the ban existed--which anyone who's attended HHDL's teachings knows it does not--what would it matter?
The one-and-only "Shugden lama" teaches that HHDL is a "liar and a hypocrite"--then they say "don't attend HHDL's teachings," then finally they make up a story about how "Shugden practitioners are banned from HHDL's teachings."
Sounds like a story made up to keep unwitting western NKT converts from discovering the truth--that there is no ban.

Fair enough - WSS introduced DS to the west at the beginning but since then, many others have learned about DS from other parties, including from websites like dorjeshugden . com and others. Also these youtubes which let me hear n see for myself who says what so that i can get to know BOTH sides of the story (and even then sometimes there is a third side!)... so please don't tar everyone with the same feather. I don't think NKT is dalai lama friendly, is it? I havent noticed if they changed.

i read the Dalai Lama's speech on 10 March Tibetan National Uprising Day. He preaches peace and harmony between Tibetans and Chinese and between Tibetans themselves too. I fully agree with his stance - harmony, communication and understanding will bring peace everywhere - between perceived enemies and perceived friends.

"It is important that Tibetans maintain friendly relations not only with people of all nationalities, but also amongst themselves. Tibetans should not engage in petty disputes with each other. I earnestly appeal to them instead to resolve any differences with patience and understanding." I sincerely hope that message includes to those who practise Dorje Shugden.

What´s happening by the way, why are the monestaries in Tibet so empty? Are they "reeducating" the monks or something?

Back in the 1970 and 1980 teachers like Ajahn Sumedho and Thich Nhat Hanh gave teachings and retreats in Manjushri ,
Manjushri Centre was glad to take there money because they needed it at the time. Gash-la put a stop to this because he did not want the pure dharma of JeTsonghapa to be mix with other Buddhist teachings,
But by 2010 it is ok to mix the pure dharma of Je Tsonkhapa with business?

btw, wisdombeann/redniece/kokopuff et all are the same "person." except now that westerner-for-hire has given way to Chinese commenters, due to the upcoming sensitive date. I'm sure the western "voice" behind these usernames will return after March.

Screaming is not the Buddhist way.
That is why the WSS is so wrong.
Every time the party tries to influence Buddhism with politics, the party's own ignorance is revealed.
The funny things is, an effective programme would have taken all this into consideration, and been more knowledgable about Buddhism - it would never have had "screaming protestors."
But, the party isn't personally interested in Buddhism, and in fact disdains it. So the employees never go all the way in doing their job.

Their wrathful appearance is because we're so mired in our delusions, you need something strong (like DS's wisdom sword hahaha) to cut through all the crap our Buddhanature is covered with. Not everyone's going to take to the softly-softly approach, are they??? The same thing's reflected in our lamas...

Never mind comparing different lamas! Just looking at individual lamas, the same lama can be wrathful to one student and in a split instant, turn to face another student and be a very happy chappy. It's not schizophrenia, it's skilful means and we know that because ppl don't benefit from schizoprehnia but they do benefit from skilful means...which the Buddhas employ when manifesting in various forms from wrathful DS to peaceful Green Tara, to suit the affinity of various practitioners.

dalai lama WON'T live forever... so what happens to the DS "ban" when he passes away? who will maintain the ban? Nobody listens to the TGIE, for example.
In fact, it will be this new generation of DS monasteries, Dharma centres and lamas who will maintain the practice and cause it to rise and grow. An entirely new generation of practitioners - all around the world - will continue to propagate and preserve the teachings. DS is "banned" from the Tib world, but gets bigger all over the world.

You see, what the CCP just never has understood, and never will, is that Tibetan life is holistic.
Leaders are relatives, friends, sometimes spiritual guides - it is all one community. Atheistic governments will never understand this strong and sacred lifestyle. The government is interested in only one thing - its own survival which fosters the rich lifestyle of its high-level workers.
Money can never understand the spirit.

actually, we can see that in spite of all that is happening, the practice is NOT going down - in fact, people are preserving the practice even stronger than ever, it has deepened people's faith in the practice & in their lamas. The centres &monasteries who practice DS are thriving & growing & more successful than ever in bringing Dharma to pple around the world.
For example, see the beautiful videos on the opening of Shar Gaden. Wonderful stuff!

Could it be possible that the Dalai Lama is seeking popularity by imposing this ban? On the other hand, it could be a technique that the Dalai Lama applies to spread DS practice vastly. Is that why this 75 year old High Lama is always smiling?

The truth will prevail. Dorje Shugden practice will continue and spread. It is said that it was hinted way back in the 1970s by Trijang Rinpoche that the true plot will be revealed. And HHDL has allowed Trijang Rinpoche to practice DS. Why has the exception been granted? Is there another side to the ban?

All dharmapallas are NOT emanations from fully enlightened beings. Most of them are samsaric and sometimes their authenticity has been disputed.
DS is a good example.
Even DS practitioners disagree.
Some think of him as a worldly, but powerful protector. Others think of him as an emanation from the Budda of Wisdom.
Is he fully enlightened ? Somehow, I don´t think you care. He´s powerful, so what the heck?

Did you know that when all the criticism started, Kache Marpo once said that Dorje Shugden followers would never be able to find the financial resources to propagate DS throughout the world to an extent as it is happening now with the controversy. So he seemed quite happy about the publicity. So what do you think? Is it all a conspiracy?

Can u imagine, at the age of 16, HHDL little shoulders were clammed with the responsibility of the entire Tibetan nation.
When he secretly left Tibet to setup the govt in Exile with the help of Dorje Shugden is like a brother holding the younger's hands with a torch in a race of freedom. Such a beautiful metaphor.
I still believe both DS n DL are holding hands now to bring happiness to more people - the world

Ooooh that IS a beautiful metaphor. I like a good metaphor - last good one I read was on dorjeshugden{DOT}com, saying that DS monasteries are like the teachers and the WSS are like a dharma protector manifesting wrath to protect the lineage. Not that I necessarily agree with that since I don't agree with the WSS's methods, but the metaphor does fit what they are trying to do!
