I've heard a lot about "saving the middle class" lately. Want to save the middle class? Stop spending $500 million of middle class tax money on risky loans to play favorites with "alternative" energy. Ignoring the risk of the loans? This is what caused the housing/financial crisis...

i heard, that after the $500 mil loan, they only added 158 jobs and that it was common knowledge in the company for a least a 1 1/2 years, that they could not compete with China, and still they went forward?

Also, that they only filed bankruptcy, after being turned down for another $300 mil loan, to start building the second planed building!

Does this sound like they were milking the system?

Grants can only keep companies going for so long. Was there ever any evidence that a solar plant could be a viable business while competing with energy made from cheaper sources?

Gee if the business is such a good idea, why didn't private investors put money there? Because Solar is a very inefficient and unreliable way to power our country, thats why. Gee the Feds sure know how to invest OUR money well don't they?

Of course for some reason it sounds 'better' than fossil fuels or nuclear power, though not for scientific reasons.

Drive by the Solyndra building everyday and work with several people who came from there. This company was doomed from the start thanks to cheaper products that China ships out in the solar business. Guess I'll be seeing more Solyndra people in our building thanks to 1000 people being laid off.

If China can produce solar panels more cheaply than the U.S., more power to them. That will enable more American homeowners--who aren't exactly flush with cash in this bad economy--to buy solar panels for their homes.

It's called the principle of comparative advantage. Each nation should concentrate on the things it does best. So China does solar panels. America still has the best computers, the best software, and Boeing is tied with Airbus as the world's leading aircraft manufacturer.

How is a company that went under because China undercut it with cheaper labor Obama's fault? This is the reality of the global economy. America can't compete with other countries on manufacturing because our workers, our society, insists on a high standard of living than that found in countries such as China. Kudos for Solyndra for trying to make a go of it here in America. But it wasn't to be.

Most analysts believe that Solyndra's solar technology (they offer solar CYLINDERS--hence the company's name--instead of the usual solar panels) was too exotic for the American market.

@mbazeley Unions demand that Americans should be paid a fair wage for the high-quality labor that they do and the superior products that they produce. The Union employees vote almost solidly Democrat, so they helped put Obama in the White House. I do not understand why Obama did not recommend that Solyndra use Union labor. Why did they need to use cheap labor, it was just taxpayer money they were using.

While the idea of an American "green energy" industry has been batted about since the mid-2000s, we failed to place effective tariffs on Chinese imports of PV panels and cells.

Made a great sound bite; but failed on the carry through. But that and acting indignant about opposing views is about all he seems to do.

Whats interesting about all of your comments is that you don't look at how many successes there have been in subsidizing sustainable energy. More jobs have been added than removed. Extending the solar 30% tax credit for example actually nets tax revenue and has added 10's of thousands of jobs. This is a large failure, but remember at least the money went back into the US economy, though, I don't endorse stimulus plans, they are better than pumping money out of the US via oil imports

Wonder how much of a kick back Obama got? Our Tax dollars stolen by bad research and the pipe dream that solar can save us all. I think I will sell solar clothes dryers for only $10 plus shipping.
