The Rock's first title win a month earlier was not a straight win. Neither was Triple H's after Summerslam 1999 or Kurt Angle in 2000, or Chris Jericho's in 2001. The Undertaker won his first from Hulk Hogan with help from Ric Flair and Paul Bearer. Mankind's win was truly emotional.

Why does it have to be that way? Why can't we see one man's skills vs. another man's skills w/o interference and then determine a winner from there? WWF/E was notorious with this pattern and it turned me off. I'm a RVD fan, but didn't like how he won the title from Cena at One Night Stand. Are you with me so far? Its like when the Broncos beat the Chargers this past season with the help of Ed Hochuli's bad call.Maybe I'm just old-school but I'd rather see a straight up match w/o interference.

There has been a few instances of somebody winning by their own merits. Randy Savage defeated Ric Flair cleanly with a hand of trunks, Goldberg defeated Hogan fair and square, Booker T won his first title cleanly, Bret Hart defeated Ric Flair by submission, and Kevin Nash defeated Bob Backlund cleanly in a sqaush.

I know there are matches that had clean finishes. I just don't see how Foley and fans can see this win as emotional and felt some sort of triumph when interference was needed to achieve it. Think of it like this. Whats more rewarding...winning fair and square knowing you worked hard to get were you are or having to take shortcuts, getting a hook-up, taking drugs or cheating your way to the top? Take wrestling out the the equation, I'm talking about competition in general.

In his later matches with The Rock he did win clean (the empty arena match) but what was created here if you followed the storyline up to this match was the sense of sitcking it to the corporation. Because they'd been screwing people left right and centre, with DX and Austin, Foley managed to...

..screw the corporation, coupling that with HIM winning the belt from The Rock...just a feeling of euphoria from the crowd. Austin's interference came across as justified from a fans perspective because The Corporation had interfered in previous matches, so I can see, if you take it out of context, why the interference sullies Foley's title win, but in the situe of the storyline leading up to this point, made complete sense and was an epic pay off.

The crowd of the Rock-Foley match was loud that you would think that there was a free WrestleMania on a Monday Night, but it was the first RAW of 1999. This was one of the best RAWs of all-time though you had Rock, Foley, The Corpration, DX, and of course Austin. I think the crowd made the show as it was a PPV like atmosphere. Plus, how could you not like Foley's "Rocky"-like victory speech after winning his first ever WWF title!

also austin was off t.v. for a little while there, and absence makes the heart grow fonder, so the crowd lost their mind when austin came out. also made it seem like (from a fan point of view) that austin o.k.'ed foley. but yeah that had to be 1 of the best raws ever. i still get goose bumps watching the crown go nuts when austins music hit!!

They had plenty in common. They were both supposed to be loners, anti-authority (BNB manhandled Jack Tunney in the days of kayfabe) and ruthless to the point of attacking heels or faces. Goldberg doesn't compare, but there are a LOT of real fans that say the only major difference between BNB and Austin was skin tone and timing. 90s fans cheered a white heel 'raising hell' but booed the black heel who did many of the same things. The 'Attitude' era was just more radical and good/bad was blurred.

hogan would have never put bad news over. stone cold would put over the rock and triple h, and vice versa and make each other look good. any heel in wwf with hogan was just there to lose against him and make him look bigger than life. i think that's why he didn't become bigger than he was. plus, bad news was more popular in canada and japan. i don't think he really cared about winning the wwf title more than just getting paid at that time.

The Rock was booed for a while being in the NOD. He sorta imposed himself on the role he was given, not vice versa. If McMahon was that forward thinking, he would have PROBABLY done it from the jump.
