mid 70's.......sunday afternoon.......doing homework........listening to Anne Nightingale playing this....marvelous!!!........thanks Annie and thank you Styx
Saw this band in Sept 76 just before release of this great album. I personally had never heard of these guys. They were the 1st band onstage at a Black Oak Arkansas/Montrose Concert. These guys wern't even on the ticket or the bill. I was there to see Montrose. (Sammy Hager had left the band unfortunately) I left after 2 or 3 BOA tunes. Montrose was ok But Styx made them all Look silly. This tune was the Highlight of the Night. The Tommy/James guitar duel was awesome.
You're right, MrDoctorX : These guitar solos are the band's Hotel California. I get a high every time I hear this song. DDY has a beautiful voice. And JY and TS are just our guitar heroes ! What a turn on. What is above the sound of an electric guitar ? What, except God and... ?
OHHH crud I forgot this in the first albums .. how naughty of me .. styx styx II serpent man best of crystal equinox .. dang unforgivable .. its the best album they made from my point of view .. and teh albums upto and including equinox are teh best songs styx ever did. after that they are still great but never on par with these albums... in my opinion anyway.
My all-time favorite Styx album- the entire disc is a masterpiece & upbeat. DeYoung was a genious, composing a "themed" track to Debussy's fabled classical piece. The intro of the six(or 12?) string acoustic guitars at 2:55 are the best- almost a folk "appalachian" sounding interlude.
best part! 2:55 it comes alive...the solos are this bands hotel california in my opinion. awesome work! hard to pick the BEST styx song but this may be it.
(From a long-time Styx fan): this is one of my favorite albums from them, as it includes both the group's rock tracks & Dennis DeYoung's "romantisized" compositions he like to write(like 1972's "Lady"). He performs Debussy's "Clair De Lune" on his solo "Music Of Styx w/ Symphony Orchestra" CD.
DeYoung's intro. to Clair De Lune on the "Music Of Styx" Cd states that this actually was his father's favorite piece of classical music- during the war, his father was stationed in Holland, staying with a family- their oldest son was a concert piano performer & he played it often for DeYoung's father.
