U can play with ur upper teeth on the three first strings and the lower set of teeth on the three others

yea the lower teeth are hard i just use my upper teeth. all you have to do is make sure you get your teeth nice and good between the strings every time you pluck, try to skip strings and move about as little as possible, make sure to improvise, and don't hurt your tooth of course!

An important thing : make sure you don't break a string while playing with your teeth, because it slaps your face pretty hard ( I experienced it a couple of time...) And keep your eyes closed if you want to keep them too! =P

Playing alone with no accompaniment is one of the essentials every musician has to learn very early on. When you solo live what are you going to do - bring a metronome with you a and plug it to an amp so you can hear it? You have to develop a natural feel for music and understand where the beats are so you can manipulate them and rearrange them (that's also something you won't learn with a metronome). Judging from your statements my guess is you haven't played in a band at all.

Playing alone is different because you are more likely to play in free time where you don't need a metronome. Obviously, a metronome is for PRACTICE, not performance. You practice with a metronome so that you get your riffs tighter (ask Satriani, Vai, or Paul Gilbert, who always say to use a metronome when doing their exercises). And I have played in a band and we had a mediocre drummer at first but once I got him to practice to a metronome, he became great and is still doing good.

I don't really know when I started playing. I was maybe 12 years old and now I'm 16. An advice that I can give is to practice improvisation, because in my opinion,I think improvisation is the key for success in music.And a second advice that I can give is to practice his beat with a metronome or something or playing while listening to a song. I'm playing drum so maybe I'm helped by this instrument. These tips can be effective and I'm sure it can help everybody.

Actually playing with a metronome is the worst thing you can do to learn. I also play drums and that helped me a lot with every other instrument and it just gave me a wider understanding about accents, rhythm, dynamics and improvisation really - drums help you learn the soul of music, and metronomes turn you into a robot.

I agree with you, but playing with a metronome is good for people that REALLY can't follow a beat, like for novice musicians, so they can have a little base. I don't personally practice with a metronome, because, as you said, metronomes are only unliving notes. Nothing can beat practicing with music! =P

That's seriously retarded to say. You know how many good musicians practice to a metronome? Most drummers do too, so when you're playing with a drummer, chances are he's practiced to a metronome. If you're at home practicing something you don't have a recording of, do you really think it's better to play in complete silence rather than with a metronome that has a consistent beat? People don't play their arpeggios to silence, they practice em to a metronome.

I AM a drummer and I've never used any metronomes and the same goes for any of my guitarist and percussionist friends and acquaintances. The best way to practice is to play along with some music. The metronome is a good tool to use if you have NO sense of rhythm AT ALL and you use it only for a while until you get the hang of it, otherwise you get used to playing with little to no feel. Don't push your weak-minded expressions on me. I've learned enough instruments by ear to know what's necessary

Jamming with music is ideal like you said, but that music you're playing with most likely was recorded with a metronome, considering that's how we traditionally record with our current technology. The drummer will be plugged to a metronome to lay down the beat and everyone else puts their part on top. I don't see how playing with a metronome could effect how much "feeling" you have considering it's just keeping the beat for you. If anything, it gets me tighter and more locked into the groove.

Well it's all subjective anyway - some people can't do without it some never need it... The point was that if you can feel the groove you don't need to use a metronome, cause it will spoils everything. It's not a necessity and once you have the groove in you it becomes utterly redundant. I know a lot of musicians and most of them have been doing this way before I was even born, but none of them ever use a metronome (I know a piano teacher that uses it from time to time tho).
