  • How do you de-bone the fish? I catch alot of garfish (Belone Belone) but I have never eaten them. I hear that people say the are excellent when smoked to.

  • @wwwfiskeforumse we cheated a bit. The fish in this video were deboned by the fish monger. Personally I find them very hard to debone if they are to be cooked in fillets. Excellent eating they are when prepared this way. I've never tried them smoked but I'm sure it is just as good. :)

  • this garfish u are talking about is the one with a long beak n needle like teeth right?

  • @knivesfishwild That is correct. Some call them needlefish, depending on where they are caught. The scientific name is Belone belone.

  • @fishingwithrod thanks!! Does it taste good? I never ate the garfish that I caught

  • hey Rod! Thanks for the advise, I went to amager strand and my first time yesterday I caught 4 nice hornfisk and other 4 i dragged 1.5 meter-2 away from me, and i somehow lost them..xD

anyway it was fun... is there a best time during the day for going fishing??

I'll try to cook them soon :)

  • @maeishoj Great! Good to hear your success. There really isn't a particular time that is best for hornfisk. Perhaps late in the afternoon. The fishing will improve in the next few weeks when more fish arrive.

  • @fishingwithrod Yeah! I've been told that around may and june is the best time for hornfisk! but throughout all the summer until septmber or so should be ok right? I caught them in the late afternoon / earlt eve 18:00 - 20:00.. that's why I asked u that.. cause we heard that.. anyways, are you coming to Dk this year? PS: I really enjoyed your recepit, but can i ask you something?: How do you clean hornfisk before cooking it? I mean for taking out the bones, when and how u do it?

  • tatters and fish man you guys got it made

  • that stuf looks good

    it looks well preperd

  • I see lots of them, but how do I get them to bite?

  • Use a rope lure. Look up 'how to make a rope lure' for help.

  • Garfish roe is poisonous.

  • definately true! my son and i nearly died from eating them. it contains tetrodotoxin, the same thing in pufferfish. i vomited and dry heaved until i nearly passed out. every1 should be aware of this...how did u know?

  • YUM!

  • Very interesting, Rod. We have gar down here in MO but I bet they aren't the same type of fish. I don't know of anybody that eats the gar in our rivers and streams. By the way, are the garfish you cooked "light" tasting, such as a trout? Doodles

  • The taste is similar to most white-flesh fish.

  • nice job. looks like a full on network production. great, I'm hungry!

  • Nice video Rod. Great cinematography.

  • i live in denmark and im getting pretty tired of the garfish. the past few years when we went fishing for them we could catch 3 gars each person if we where lucky, but this year theres been so unbeliveably many that it aint fun catching them anymore, when me and my little brother go fishing for sea trouts at the beach, we can catch like 20-40 of them in a few hours making it almost impossible to catch the trouts cus theres constantly a garfish after or on the lure.i just wish they would go away

  • Hornfisk season is definitely not the time for targeting sea trout. :) It's in fact an enjoyable season as it is only several weeks per year.

  • hmmm i think iv'e been catching hornfisk nearly two months now, still catch a few trouts tough

  • Hi Rod !

Very good vid and nice recipe. I like to add a little bit garlic to the sauce and green asparus as veg.

Goes very good with a groen Tuborg and Akvavit ;-))

I don't agree with you that hornfisk season is not the season for sea trout. They're there and you can catch them in the dusk or dawn before the small good tasting silver arrows arrive ;-))

  • Thank you for the comment goeddoek. :) That's good to know about good sea trout fishing during the hornfisk season, because I am going to be in DK in just over a week from now. ;) Hopefully I'll be able to catch both species consistently once I arrive. :)

  • makes me hungry!!!!!

  • Cool fish it is like a houndfish bet it would be good fried in cornmeal

  • ok thanks for explaning BTW do they taste like chicken lol

  • hope those are not like the aligator gar here in the states ? I heard you can eat them they have no bones. A friend of mine said you drop them in a pot of boiling salt water then pop the shell like a lobster , then fillet or what ever ! I know the things stink to high heaven when i catch them on my bass lures lol < Great video I dont eat much fish LOL

  • These are not alligator gars. There are dozens of garfish species (both salt and freshwater) in the world and this particular one is found in the Eastern Atlantic. Each spring they make their migratory journey to the Baltic Sea for spawning, passing UK and Scandanavia countries where they can be caught. Its scientific name is Belone belone.

  • i hate eating fish

  • man... i have never seen/heard of anyone eating GAR..... looks good though

  • looks tasty,i have never tried.

  • Their not garfish, their called needle fish.Small ones make great rockfish bait :]

  • No, needlefish are completely unrelated to this particular species. This is one of many saltwater garfish species found around the world. Their distribution includes the Eastern Atlantic, where they make a spring journey to the Baltic every year for spawning. The scientific name is Belone belone. Its a popular eating fish among Europeans during the season.

  • Didn't know you could eat them beast :]

  • MMMMMMM! Did you catch that on a fly? I love to fish for gar.

  • Yes I did catch these on the fly. Very fun on a 3 or 4 wt. I'll post a video response to this video that shows the flyfishing part of it. These aren't the freshwater alligator gars found in Eastern US. It's a saltwater species that doesn't grow much longer than 20 inches long. Scientific name is Belone belone.

  • Bologna, bologna? ; )

  • Great!! Now I'm hungry. :)
