Thank you for putting this up. I still have the original 33, bought it the day it came out, that tells you a little about how long I have been around. In the top 5 of my all time favorite albums. JR
mr lane clearly had a social conscience & was very working class judging by this song, it just goes to show not all people in the south east are greedy & shallow?
@scouserla1 ...haha..agreed, but unfortunately you will find shallow & greedy people all over the world, an attitude that is greatly encouraged by TV..
@formaface i know lad, i was talking about the political beliefs of the people from the south east, its never exactly been left wing has it? what was thatchers famous quote? "theres no such thing as society" drebis has a working class theme to it
I know this record has I bought the Stay With Me single .Spent years adoring the B.SIDE and could never understand why it wasn't appreciated more. Better late than never!
Been doing some catching up lately, including Nod's as Good as a Wink..a fine, underrated album..that Faces sloppy yet tight style has only been equalled by the Black Crowes in my view, and sounds much more authentic than a lot of the manufactured BS we hear today...
if you ever go to LA, when the people don't talk to you, just lie and say your rod stewart's kid... every one in LA is so nice i love LA... yay go daodgers!
@formaface Speaking of Steve Marriott, I think Ronnie had him partly in mind when he wrote this. I know the official story is that it was about Ronnie's dad at the jumble sales and on the dole line, but there are elements of this that strongly recall the Marriott/Lane relationship. "I don't know what you would have done without me hanging around". And Ron was left on the debris by Steve.
Congrats to both the Small Faces and the Faces for their joint Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination.
@gropingwithastoker you could be right. Especially the last lines. Ronnie worshipped steve Marriott during the Small Faces days; they even owned a house and a studio together. And Steve just dumped him and the others cold. Speaking of the R&RHOF, Rod Stewart says he'll join the Faces in a reunion in they get inducted next year. Problem with that is it's a double nomination with the Small Faces. What do you do about them, especially Marriott? Stupid really, they were different bands.
@formaface True, but it isn't a question of credence. It's a question of exposure. Too many people on this planet have never heard them, especially the music of the Small Faces and the amazing songs of Marriott/Lane team.. And I agree with clashcityrocker2007. I'd love to hear this song with Marriott singing Stewart's parts. Not just because Marriott was such an amazing singer, but also because"feels" like he should have been singing them.
@robertemmet321 'Ronnie worshipped Steve Marriot during the Small Faces days and Steve just dumped him and the others cold.' What was the specific moment that infuriated Steve that made him leave out? I know it was a rehearsal. Who was involved? Would you know?
@Khultan Marriott's frustration had been growing. He wanted to take the band in a heavy musical direction he knew Ronnie could never accept. If you are referring to the concert Steve walked out of, it was new year's eve in '68 at the Ally Pally. Sound quality was bad. With the band unable to reproduce the studio sound of the new hit album Ogdens, they were stuck doing the "oldies" that sounded awful. Hyper Steve, whose moods had been getting blacker, walked out, ending the SFs.
I found this song on the B side of stay with me ,i bought the single all scratched and battered from a pitch in Paddys market on a sunday morning ,paddys market is in glasgow it is a place where all the irish immigrants would go to and sell what they could muster ,it is before you get to the Barras ,when i got home and realised the a side was scratched to the point of no return i put the b-side on and apart from a couple of jumps at the very start it was playable ,im so glad i found debris im 37
@stmirrentoonarmy What a great find....copies a hard to come by now, shame about side one, you can still find copies of the album for sale today on ebay, but all the tracks can be found on this channel in the playlist, Faces, Five guys a work, Live.....plus some album tracks....enjoy my friend.
I got back from The Nam on 06 November 1970 and moved into an apartment on Spencer Street in Torrance, California. Got myself a sweet stero, a brand new Plymouth Roadrunner and I good job working at LAX. I can remember playing this song from "A Nod's As Good As A Wink" with Ronnie Lane, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart. Didn't really know the origin of the song but I've read the story of his dad so it makes this song even better. Thanks for posting a lifetime of memories. R.I.P. Ronnie Lane.
Man, I love this track. THE FACES might not have had the best vocalists but they had songs and musicianship. Ronnie Lane's voice really works for this song and, although I was not alive then, it's kind of sad that this group didn't last longer than it did.
Been digitizing my old vinyl collection - making compilations to play in my car and on the computer. This album is one of the first I've done. Records crackles and all.
@formaface :) Had the album for years, got it when I was in high school. I just prefer embeddable videos for sharing on Facebook. I know, I can post the link, but that disturbs my programmer nature! :)
One of their best tunes! IMHO!
